Luna. Chapter 196

(Lyra's POV)

Asher came running back into the house, his little hand firmly gripping someone else's much larger one. My heart was beating so hard I thought it might explode.

Then I saw him.

Kael.

My Kael.

Standing in my doorway like something out of a dream. Travel-worn but smiling. Tired but here. Real.

My heart almost stopped.

He looked good. Thinner maybe. A little rougher around the edges. But those eyes. Those warm brown eyes that had haunted my dreams for three weeks.

"Hi," he said softly.

Such a simple word. But it held everything.

"Hi yourself," I managed.

Asher was tugging on Kael's hand, chattering excitedly. "Daddy, look! We decorated the tree! And we made cookies! And Nova got big! And Mama missed you so much she cried yesterday!"

"Asher!" I protested, my cheeks burning.

Kael's smile widened. "Did she now?"

"Just a little," I admitted.

"Good," he said. "I missed you too. So much it hurt."

Elena cleared her throat behind me. "Should I give you two a moment?"

"No," Kael said quickly. "I want to see everyone. I want to see Nova."

He stepped fully into the house, and I caught his scent. That familiar mix of pine and leather and something uniquely him. It wrapped around me like a warm blanket.

Elena walked over, holding Nova carefully. "Someone wants to meet her daddy."

Kael's expression changed. Softened. Got vulnerable in a way that made my chest tight.

He reached for Nova with gentle hands. She studied his face seriously, like she was trying to decide if she remembered him. Then she smiled. That big, gummy baby smile that could light up a room.

"Hello, beautiful girl," Kael whispered. "I'm your daddy. I've missed you so much."

Nova reached up and grabbed his nose with her tiny fist. Kael laughed, and the sound filled our entire house with warmth.

"She's gotten so big," he said, his voice thick with emotion.

"She has. She's trying to sit up on her own now. And she laughs at everything Asher does."

"Smart girl. Asher's pretty funny." Kael looked down at our son, who was still clinging to his leg. "Have you been taking care of Mama and Nova for me?"

Asher puffed out his chest proudly. "I helped with everything! I can change diapers now!"

"You can?" Kael looked impressed. "That's a pretty big responsibility."

"Mama showed me how. But the stinky ones are still too hard."

"The stinky ones are hard for everyone," Kael agreed solemnly.

Elena was watching this exchange with tears in her eyes. "I should head home. Give you all some time together."

"You don't have to go," I said.

"I want to. Besides, Victor's making dinner." She kissed Nova's cheek, then Asher's head, then mine. "Welcome home, Kael."

"Thank you, Elena. For everything. For taking care of them while I was gone."

"They're family," she said simply. "That's what family does."

After Elena left, we moved to the living room. Kael sat on the couch with Nova in his lap, Asher pressed against his side. I curled up in the armchair across from them, just watching.

My family. Together again.

"Tell me about the mission," I said. "What you can tell me."

Kael's expression darkened slightly. "It's complicated. There were some loose ends from the war. People who needed to be held accountable."

"Is it over?"

"This part is. There might be more later, but for now, yes. It's over."

I noticed he didn't quite meet my eyes when he said it. There was something else. Something he wasn't telling me.

But right now, I didn't care. He was home. Safe. That was enough.

"Daddy, want to see our cookies?" Asher asked.

"Absolutely. But first, I have something for you."

Kael reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small wrapped package. "I brought you something from my trip."

Asher tore into the wrapping paper with enthusiasm. Inside was a small wooden wolf, carved with the same intricate detail as the box that had arrived earlier.

"It's like the ones on Mama's bracelet!" Asher exclaimed.

"That's right. We all match now."

Asher held up the wooden wolf, examining it from every angle. "It's perfect. Thank you, Daddy."

"You're welcome, buddy."

Nova was getting fussy in Kael's lap, making those tired baby sounds. "Someone needs a nap," I observed.

"I'll put her down," Kael offered.

"Are you sure? You just got home."

"I'm sure. I want to." He stood up, cradling Nova against his chest. "I missed bedtime stories."

Asher jumped up too. "Can I help?"

"Of course."

I watched them head upstairs together. My boys and my girl. My heart felt so full it might burst.

While they were upstairs, I cleaned up the cookie mess in the kitchen. I could hear Kael's voice drifting down, reading Nova a story in that soft tone he used for bedtime. Asher's excited whispers as he helped tuck her in.

This was what I'd dreamed about during those lonely nights. This ordinary, perfect domesticity.

When they came back down, Asher was yawning despite his efforts to stay awake.

"Someone else looks tired," I noted.

"I'm not tired," Asher protested, then immediately yawned again.

Kael scooped him up. "How about we all go to bed? It's been a long day."

"But we didn't eat the cookies yet!"

"We'll have cookies for breakfast," I promised. "A special Christmas cookie breakfast."

That seemed to satisfy him. Kael carried him upstairs while I turned off the Christmas tree lights and locked the front door.

When I got to Asher's room, Kael was tucking him in, humming softly. The same lullaby he'd sung when Asher was a baby.

"Good night, buddy," Kael whispered, kissing Asher's forehead.

"Good night, Daddy. I'm glad you're home."

"Me too."

We crept out of Asher's room and checked on Nova. She was sleeping peacefully, one tiny fist curled against her cheek.

Finally, we made it to our bedroom.

Kael sat heavily on the edge of the bed, suddenly looking exhausted. "God, it's good to be home."

I sat beside him. "How are you really?"

He turned to look at me. "Better now. Much better."

"The mission was hard?"

"They always are." He reached for my hand. "But I'm done with long missions for a while. I told the Council I need to be home more. With my family."

"Really?"

"Really." He squeezed my fingers. "I've missed too much already. Nova's first smile. Her first laugh. Asher losing his first tooth."

"He was so proud of that tooth."

"I should have been here."

"You're here now. That's what matters."

Kael nodded, but I could see something still bothering him. Some shadow in his eyes.

"What is it?" I asked. "What aren't you telling me?"

He was quiet for a long moment. Then he said, "There's something different about this job. About what we uncovered. It changes things."

"What kind of things?"

"I can't tell you all of it. Not yet. But Lyra..." He turned to face me fully. "I need you to know that everything I do, everything I risk, it's all for this. For you and Asher and Nova. For our family."

"I know that."

"Do you? Because sometimes I wonder if you think I leave because it's easier than staying."

My heart cracked a little. "I would never think that."

"Good. Because leaving you is the hardest thing I do. Every time."

I leaned into him, breathing in his familiar scent. "Then don't leave anymore. Not for a while."

"I won't. I promise."

We sat together in comfortable silence, just holding each other. Outside, the snow was still falling. Inside, our children slept safely.

This was everything I'd ever wanted. This moment. This peace.

This family.

Finally home.
