Luna. Chapter 85
(Lyra's POV)
"Dad, where is the book?"
Victor's face was set in stubborn lines. "Somewhere you can't find it."
"This isn't your choice to make."
"It is when it concerns my daughter's safety."
I wanted to scream. Instead, I turned to Kael. "Did you know about this?"
"No. But I understand why he did it."
"Of course you do. You both think I'm too weak to handle this."
"Not weak," Kael said carefully. "Untrained."
"Then train me!"
"With what? Without the foundational text, we're working blind."
I felt tears of frustration building. "So what now? We just wait for the next attack? Hope Asher survives whatever comes next?"
"We find another way," Kael said. "There has to be another copy somewhere."
"Where?"
"I don't know. But we'll figure it out."
Victor stepped forward. "Lyra, please understand. I lost my mother to these abilities. I won't lose you too."
"You're not going to lose me."
"How can you be sure?"
"Because I'm not her. And because I have something she didn't."
"Which is?"
"People who believe in me." I looked at Kael. "Even when they're scared for me."
Kael moved closer, his hand brushing mine. "I do believe in you."
The touch sent electricity up my arm. I should pull away, but I didn't want to.
"This is all very touching," Victor said dryly, "but it doesn't change anything. You're not getting that book."
"Fine." I turned away from him. "Then I'll find another way."
"Lyra—"
"No, Dad. You made your choice. Now I'm making mine."
I walked out of the library with Kael and Asher behind me, my heart pounding with determination and something else I didn't want to name.
"So," Kael said as we reached the parking lot. "Do I still get that date?"
Despite everything, I laughed. "We didn't find the book."
"We tried. That's got to count for something."
"Does it?"
"I hope so. Because I was really looking forward to it."
The hope in his voice almost undid me. "Kael..."
"Just think about it. Okay?"
I nodded, not trusting my voice.
Maybe a date wasn't such a terrible idea after all.
