Luna. Chapter 201

Lyra's POV

About two hours into the drive, I started noticing it.

Kael's scent was changing.

It was subtle at first. Just a slight shift in the familiar pine and leather smell I'd grown to love. But as we got closer to pack territory, it became more pronounced.

Wilder. More wolf than man.

Nova noticed it too. She kept making soft cooing sounds and reaching toward the front seat where Kael was driving. Her little nose would wrinkle like she was trying to figure out what was different.

"Everything okay back there?" Kael asked, glancing in the rearview mirror.

"Fine. Just... is it normal for your scent to change like this?"

Kael's hands tightened on the steering wheel. "What do you mean?"

"You smell different. More intense. Like..." I searched for the right words. "Like the wolf part of you is getting stronger."

He was quiet for a moment. "That's probably the enhancement serum responding to being near pack territory. Being around other wolves."

"Is it permanent?"

"I don't know. Probably."

Nova made a sharp sound, almost like a bark. We both looked at her in surprise.

"Did she just...?" Kael started.

"I think so." I unbuckled my seatbelt and turned around to look at Nova properly. She was staring at Kael with bright, alert eyes. More alert than any eight-month-old should be.

"Pull over," I said.

"Why?"

"Just pull over."

Kael found a rest stop and parked. As soon as the car stopped moving, Nova started making more sounds. Not crying or fussing. Something else. Something that sounded almost like communication.

"She's responding to your changed scent," I realized.

Kael got out and came around to Nova's side of the car. The moment he opened her door, she reached for him with both arms, making those strange little barking sounds.

"Hey there, beautiful girl," he said softly, lifting her from the car seat.

Nova immediately calmed down, but she kept sniffing at his neck. Like she was trying to understand something.

"The enhancement serum," Kael said quietly. "I think it's affecting her too. Through me."

"How is that possible?"

"I don't know. Maybe through nursing. Or just proximity." He looked worried. "We should turn back. If this is changing her..."

"No." I got out of the car and joined them. "Look at her, Kael. Does she seem distressed?"

Nova was contentedly babbling in his arms, more alert and engaged than I'd ever seen her.

"She seems... better. More aware."

"Exactly. Whatever's happening, it's not hurting her."

Asher climbed out of his booster seat and ran over to us. "Why did we stop?"

"Nova was getting fussy," I said. "She needed some fresh air."

"Can I stretch my legs too?"

"Of course, baby. Stay where we can see you."

Asher ran around the picnic area, burning off energy while Kael and I discussed what was happening.

"If the serum is affecting Nova," I said, "what does that mean for her future?"

"It means she might develop abilities earlier than normal. Enhanced senses. Increased intelligence. Maybe even early shifting capabilities."

"Is that dangerous?"

"It could be. She'll need proper training. Guidance from experienced pack members."

I felt a chill of fear. "So we really do need to go to Iron Claw Pack. For her sake."

"Maybe. Or we find another way to get her the help she needs."

A car pulled into the rest stop behind us. I glanced over, expecting to see another family on a road trip.

Instead, I saw a familiar figure getting out of a black sedan.

"Oh my god," I breathed.

Magnus walked toward us, a huge grin on his weathered face. "Well, well. Look what the road dragged in."

"Magnus!" Asher shrieked, running full speed toward the old werewolf.

Magnus caught him in a bear hug, spinning him around once before setting him down. "There's my favorite little wolf! You've gotten so big!"

"Magnus, what are you doing here?" I asked.

"Heard through the grapevine that you folks might be heading toward Iron Claw territory. Thought you could use an escort."

Kael shifted Nova to one arm and shook Magnus's hand with the other. "Good to see you, old friend."

"You too, boy. Though I have to say, you smell different. Stronger."

"Long story."

Magnus studied Kael's face. "I'll bet it is." Then he turned to me, and his expression softened. "How are you holding up, little one?"

"Nervous," I admitted.

"That's understandable. Going back to a place that holds bad memories is never easy."

"What if they don't accept us?"

Magnus snorted. "They'd be fools not to. You're pack royalty now, whether they like it or not."

"I'm not sure I feel like royalty."

"You will. Give it time."

Nova made one of her new sounds, and Magnus's eyebrows shot up. "What was that?"

"She's been doing that since we left," I explained. "We think it's related to changes from the enhancement serum."

"Enhancement serum?" Magnus's voice sharpened. "What enhancement serum?"

Kael briefly explained what had happened during his mission. About the exposure. About the increased abilities.

Magnus listened intently, then asked to hold Nova. She went to him willingly, which was unusual. She was normally shy with strangers.

"Interesting," Magnus murmured, watching Nova carefully. "She's definitely more aware than a typical eight-month-old. Her wolf instincts are developing early."

"Is that bad?" I asked.

"Not bad. Just different. She'll need special attention as she grows up."

"That's what we figured."

Magnus handed Nova back to Kael. "All the more reason to get her around experienced pack members. Iron Claw has some of the best trainers in the country."

Asher ran back over to us. "Magnus, are you coming with us?"

"That's the plan, little man. If your parents don't mind the company."

"We'd love the company," Kael said. "The more familiar faces when we arrive, the better."

"Good. I'll follow behind you. Just in case you need backup."

The idea of Magnus being there when we arrived at Iron Claw Pack made me feel better. He was neutral. Respected. His presence would help smooth the transition.

"Thank you," I told him.

"No need to thank me. We're family. That's what family does."

Family. The word hit me right in the heart.

"Ready to continue?" Kael asked.

I looked at my little family. Asher, bouncing with excitement about Magnus joining our convoy. Nova, alert and content in Kael's arms. Kael himself, nervous but determined.

And Magnus, our unexpected guardian angel.

"Ready," I said.

We got back in our cars and continued toward Iron Claw Pack territory. Magnus's headlights steady in the rearview mirror.

Whatever we were walking into, we wouldn't be walking into it alone.
