Luna. Chapter 9

(Lyra’s POV)

The pack gathering area had been transformed into something resembling a courtroom, with raised platforms and formal seating arrangements. Torches flickered in the evening breeze, casting dancing shadows across the faces of wolves I'd once considered family. Now they looked at me with a mixture of pity, curiosity, and judgment.

I wore a simple black dress - appropriate for a funeral, which is what this felt like. The death of my marriage, my pack membership, my identity as Luna. My father stood beside me, a solid presence in the sea of hostile faces.

Kael emerged from the packhouse wearing his formal Alpha attire, looking every inch the powerful leader he was. Behind him walked Seraphina, draped in flowing white silk that seemed to glow in the torchlight. She wore my grandmother's pearls and a serene expression that suggested she was exactly where she belonged.

Elder Marcus, the pack's ceremonial leader, called the gathering to order. "We are here tonight to witness the formal rejection of Luna Lyra Blackwood by Alpha Kael Blackwood, for reasons of deception and betrayal of the mate bond."

Deception and betrayal. The words echoed across the silent crowd, branding me with accusations I'd never imagined hearing.

"Alpha Blackwood," Elder Marcus continued, "state your reasons for this rejection."

Kael stepped forward, his voice carrying clearly across the gathering. "I reject Lyra as my mate and Luna because she has proven herself untrustworthy. She fabricated a pregnancy to manipulate me and attempted to use false documentation to support her deception. When confronted with evidence of her lies, she refused to acknowledge the truth."

Each word felt like a physical blow. He spoke with such conviction, such certainty, that for a moment I wondered if I truly was losing my mind.

"Furthermore," Kael continued, "she has shown jealousy and hostility toward a pack member who survived trauma and needed our protection. Her behavior has been divisive and harmful to pack unity."

The crowd murmured their disapproval, buying every word of his carefully constructed narrative. I realized that Seraphina had been busy during my absence, no doubt sharing her version of events with key pack members.

"Luna Blackwood," Elder Marcus said, "you may respond to these accusations if you choose."

I looked out at the sea of faces - people I'd helped, wolves I'd cared for, families I'd supported during difficult times. Now they were eager to see me fall.

"I have nothing to say," I said quietly. "Except that someday, when the truth comes out, you'll remember this night with shame."

"The accused offers no defense," Elder Marcus announced. "Alpha Blackwood, do you formally reject this woman as your mate?"

Kael's eyes met mine across the ceremonial space. For just a moment, I saw something flicker there - doubt, regret, maybe even love. But then his gaze shifted to Seraphina, who nodded encouragingly, and his expression hardened.

"I, Alpha Kael Blackwood, formally reject Lyra as my mate and Luna. I sever all bonds between us and banish her from Iron Claw Pack territory."

Declaration takes effect immediately., and I gasped as I felt something fundamental break inside me. The mate bond, already weakened by weeks of emotional distance, snapped completely. It was like losing a limb, a sudden absence where connection used to be.

But before Elder Marcus could declare the ceremony complete, a new voice rang out across the gathering.

"Wait."

A figure emerged from the shadows at the edge of the clearing - tall, powerful, moving with the confident stride of an Alpha. As he stepped into the torchlight, I heard gasps ripple through the crowd.

Alpha Magnus Steele of the Mountain Cross Pack. One of the most powerful Alphas in the region, and someone I'd never expected to see here.

"Elder Marcus," Magnus said formally, "I invoke the Right of Second Chance."

The crowd fell completely silent. The Right of Second Chance was an ancient law, rarely invoked, that allowed an Alpha to claim a rejected mate before the ceremony was complete.

Kael stepped forward, his face dark with anger. "You have no right to interfere in Iron Claw Pack business."

"I have every right," Magnus replied calmly. "The Right of Second Chance is recognized by the Council of Alphas. Unless you wish to challenge the old laws?"

Seraphina moved closer to Kael, her face pale with shock. This clearly wasn't part of her plan.

Magnus turned to me, his dark eyes unreadable. "Lyra Blackwood, I offer you the protection of Mountain Cross Pack and the option of a second mate bond. Do you accept?"

I stared at him in shock. I'd met Magnus a few times at inter-pack gatherings, but we'd barely spoken. He was known to be serious, powerful, and completely uninterested in romantic entanglements. Why was he offering this?

"I..." I started, then looked at Kael. My former husband was watching with an expression I couldn't read - anger, certainly, but something else underneath.

"You don't know her," Kael said to Magnus. "She's proven herself to be manipulative and dishonest."

"I know enough," Magnus replied. "I know that your pack is about to banish a pregnant female based on accusations that seem... questionable."

"She's not pregnant," Seraphina spoke up for the first time. "She made it up to try to keep Kael's attention."

Magnus's gaze shifted to me, and I felt like he was seeing things others couldn't. "Are you pregnant, Lyra?"

"Yes," I said firmly. "I am."

"Then you and your child will be safe in my pack." He extended his hand to me. "The choice is yours."

I looked around the gathering one more time - at the faces that had turned against me, at Kael who was watching with clenched fists, at Seraphina who looked like she wanted to kill me.

Then I looked at Magnus's outstretched hand. It represented safety, protection, a chance to start over. It wasn't love, but it was rescue.

"I accept," I said, placing my hand in his.

The crowd erupted in shocked murmurs. Kael took a step forward as if to protest, but Magnus's warning growl stopped him.

"The Right of Second Chance has been invoked and accepted," Elder Marcus announced, though he looked as stunned as everyone else. "Lyra Blackwood is now under the protection of Mountain Cross Pack."

As Magnus led me away from the ceremony, I heard Seraphina's voice behind us: "Well, that was unexpected. But I suppose it works out perfectly for everyone."

I didn't look back. Whatever my future held with Magnus and his pack, it had to be better than staying where I wasn't wanted or believed.

But as we reached the edge of the gathering, I heard Kael call out my name. When I turned, he was standing alone on the platform, Seraphina having disappeared. For a moment, he looked lost, uncertain.

"Lyra," he said, his voice carrying across the distance between us. "I..."

But whatever he might have said was lost as Magnus guided me into his waiting vehicle. As we drove away from Iron Claw Pack territory, I placed my hand on my belly and whispered to my baby:

"It's okay, little one. We're safe now."
