Luna. Chapter 147

(Lyra's POV)

Later that night, after everyone had gone to their respective safe houses, Derek sat me down for a conversation I'd been dreading.

"There's one more thing," he said quietly. "About the agreement between Kael and the King."

"What now?"

"It's about the enforcement mechanisms. About what happens if the royal family decides Kael isn't complying fast enough."

I felt ice in my veins. "Tell me."

Derek opened another section of the file, revealing pages I hadn't seen before. "Paragraph fifteen, subsection C. Quote: 'In the event of continued non-compliance or resistance to oversight protocols, immediate corrective action may be taken against secondary targets to ensure primary compliance.'"

"Secondary targets?"

"Anyone the Crown deems capable of influencing the primary signatory's decision-making process."

"They're talking about threatening people to control Kael."

"Specifically, they're talking about threatening you and Asher."

The words hit me like a physical blow. "They built in mechanisms to threaten us if Kael doesn't obey."

"It gets worse."

"How?"

"Subsection D. Quote: 'Secondary targets may include but are not limited to immediate family members, pack affiliates, and dependent minors under the protection of the signatory.'"

"They're not just threatening us. They're threatening everyone Kael cares about."

"Everyone who might give him a reason to resist royal authority."

I stared at the legal document, understanding for the first time the full scope of the trap Kael had walked into.

"This isn't an agreement," I said slowly. "It's a hostage situation."

"Exactly. The King didn't just take Kael's pack. He took everyone Kael loves as collateral."

"Including Asher."

"Especially Asher. Because that's the one threat that would make Kael do absolutely anything."

I thought about our son, sleeping peacefully in his secure location, unaware that his existence was being used as a weapon against his father.

"How long has Kael known about these enforcement clauses?"

"Since the beginning. He knew exactly what he was signing."

"And he signed it anyway."

"Because the alternative was watching them take Asher immediately."

I felt a terrible mixture of admiration and heartbreak. Kael had walked willingly into a trap that made him powerless to protect anyone, because it was the only way to buy us time.

"Derek, there's something else I need to know."

"What?"

"The attack on me at the pack house. The one that put me in the hospital."

"What about it?"

"Was that part of the enforcement protocol?"

Derek was quiet for a long moment. "Yes. Paragraph sixteen. Quote: 'Warning demonstrations may be employed to illustrate the consequences of continued resistance.'"

"They hurt me to send Kael a message."

"They hurt you to prove they could hurt you. To prove that his agreement doesn't actually protect anyone."

"And if he continues to resist?"

"Then the demonstrations escalate."

"To what?"

Derek flipped to the final page of the agreement. "Quote: 'Final enforcement measures may include but are not limited to permanent removal of secondary targets from the signatory's sphere of influence.'"

"Permanent removal."

"They're giving themselves legal cover to kill anyone who might motivate Kael to resist."

The room felt like it was spinning. "They're going to kill us all if he doesn't submit completely."

"Or they'll make him watch while they take Asher and disappear him into their research programs."

I thought about the children Emma had described, the ones who'd been taken to the royal estate for testing. The ones who'd never come back.

"That's what this is really about," I said slowly. "Not just controlling Kael. Not just neutralizing Asher as a threat. They want to break him completely."

"A broken Alpha is a compliant Alpha."

"And a compliant Alpha with a powerful child is a useful asset."

"Exactly."

I stood up and walked to the window, looking out at the dark street. Somewhere out there, Kael was probably wrestling with the same impossible calculations we were dealing with.

"Derek, I need to ask you something, and I need you to be completely honest."

"Of course."

"Do you think there's any way out of this that doesn't end with our family destroyed?"

Derek was quiet for a long time. "I think there might be. But it would require taking risks that could make everything worse."

"What kind of risks?"

"The kind that involve making enemies of the entire royal establishment. The kind that could start a civil war in the supernatural community."

"And if we don't take those risks?"

"Then Kael remains trapped, Asher eventually disappears into royal custody, and you spend the rest of your life as Cassius's political prisoner."

I pressed my forehead against the cool glass of the window. "Some choice."

"It's the choice they've left us."

"Then I guess we'd better start planning a war."

"Lyra, you need to understand what that means. War against the royal family isn't like fighting rogue packs or supernatural criminals. They have resources, connections, legal authority."

"They also have our son. And they're threatening to take him away forever."

"Are you prepared for what that kind of fight would cost?"

I thought about Asher's laughter, about the way he'd started calling Kael "Daddy" with such pure joy. About the family we'd built and the future we'd dreamed of.

"I'm prepared to pay whatever it costs. The question is whether Kael is."

"What do you mean?"

"I mean he's been trying to protect us by giving in to their demands. By sacrificing himself for our safety. If we go to war, we're asking him to risk everything he's been trying to protect."

"You think he won't fight?"

"I think he'll fight. But I think it'll destroy him if we lose people he loves in the process."

Derek nodded slowly. "Then we'd better make sure we don't lose."
