(Kael's POV)

Instead of returning to breakfast, I went looking for my father. I found him in his study, reading reports with the kind of focused concentration I remembered from my childhood.

"Dad, I need to talk to you."

He looked up, immediately reading the seriousness in my expression. "What's on your mind?"

"I've been having nightmares."

"What kind of nightmares?"

I described the dreams in detail, watching his face carefully for any sign of recognition or concern.

When I finished, Thomas set down his papers and studied me for a long moment.

"How long has this been happening?"

"A few weeks. They're getting more intense."

"And they started before Lyra returned?"

"Just before. Like something knew she was coming back."

Thomas nodded slowly, like this was confirming something he'd suspected.

"Dad, what aren't you telling me about becoming Alpha?"

"There are aspects of leadership that can't be explained, only experienced."

"That's not an answer."

"It's the only answer I can give you right now."

"Why?"

"Because some knowledge is dangerous before you're ready to handle it."

I felt frustration building in my chest. "I'm having nightmares about transforming into some kind of monster, and you're giving me cryptic responses about dangerous knowledge?"

"You're not transforming into a monster."

"Then what am I transforming into?"

Thomas was quiet for several minutes, clearly struggling with how much to reveal.

"Alpha power isn't just political authority," he said finally. "In bloodlines like ours, it's something more fundamental."

"More fundamental how?"

"Enhanced abilities. Stronger instincts. Sometimes... other capabilities."

"Like what?"

"Like being able to protect your pack from threats that ordinary Alphas can't handle."

"Are you talking about supernatural abilities?"

"I'm talking about potential that most wolves never develop. Potential that only emerges under specific circumstances."

"What circumstances?"

"When your pack faces threats that require more than conventional leadership."

I thought about the intelligence report Elena had shown me. About Cassius and Seraphina building an army.

"Is this about the threats from Cassius and Seraphina?"

"It's about threats in general. Your bloodline has always produced Alphas who can handle extreme situations."

"By becoming something inhuman?"

"By becoming more than human when necessary."

"Dad, that's not reassuring."

"It's not supposed to be reassuring. It's supposed to be the truth."

"What happened to you when you became Alpha? Did you go through this same transformation?"

Thomas rolled up his sleeves, showing me his arms. They looked normal, but when I looked closer, I could see faint patterns beneath the skin. Like scars, but not quite.

"This is what it looks like when the power is controlled and channeled properly."

"And if it's not controlled?"

"Then it controls you instead."

"How do I control it?"

"By accepting it without letting it consume you. By using it to protect rather than to dominate."

"That sounds like a very fine line."

"It is. Which is why this conversation stays between us until you've learned to manage the transition."

"What about Lyra? She's noticed I'm not sleeping well."

"Lyra can't know about this until you've stabilized. The knowledge would put her in danger."

"How would knowledge put her in danger?"

"Because others like Cassius would use her as leverage if they knew you were going through the emergence."

"The emergence?"

"That's what we call the period when Alpha abilities manifest. It's a vulnerable time."

"How long does it last?"

"Weeks. Sometimes months."

"Months of nightmares and feeling like I'm losing my mind?"

"Months of learning to channel power you've never had before."

I slumped in my chair. "This is insane."

"This is genetics. This is what you inherited from generations of Alphas who were willing to sacrifice their humanity to protect their packs."

"And if I don't want to sacrifice my humanity?"

"Then you don't become Alpha. You pass the responsibility to someone else."

"Someone who doesn't have these abilities?"

"Someone who doesn't have the burden of using them responsibly."

I thought about my family. About Lyra and Nova and Asher. About the pack members who had welcomed us home so enthusiastically.

"If I go through this emergence, will I still be myself?"

"The core of who you are doesn't change. But your capabilities expand dramatically."

"And the nightmares?"

"They're your mind trying to process abilities it doesn't understand yet."

"So they'll stop once I learn to control the power?"

"They'll change. Become less frightening and more informative."

"Informative how?"

"You'll start receiving intuitive warnings about threats to your pack. Insights about problems before they become critical."

"Like supernatural intuition?"

"Like enhanced pattern recognition and threat assessment."

That actually sounded useful, if I could trust it.

"Dad, why didn't you warn me about this?"

"Because knowing about it before it starts can interfere with the natural development process."

"And now?"

"Now it's started, so we need to manage it carefully."

"What does that mean practically?"

"It means daily training sessions to help you channel the emerging abilities. It means meditation to maintain your sense of self. And it means absolute secrecy until the process is complete."

"How do I explain my behavior changes to Lyra?"

"You don't change your behavior. You learn to function normally despite what's happening internally."

"That sounds impossible."

"It's difficult, not impossible. I did it. My father did it. You can too."

I hoped he was right.

But looking at the faint patterns beneath the skin of his arms, I wondered what the real cost of this power would be.

And whether I'd still be the man Lyra fell in love with when the emergence was complete.
