Luna. Chapter 191
(Kael's POV)
The palace guards looked confused when I walked into the main hall with Adrian leaning on my shoulder.
"Your Majesty?" The captain stepped forward, hand moving instinctively to his weapon. "Is everything all right?"
"Everything is far from all right," I said before Adrian could answer. "Your king has been systematically poisoned for months."
The captain's expression shifted from confusion to alarm. "Poisoned? By who?"
"General Cassius."
A ripple of shock went through the assembled guards. Several of them exchanged glances that suggested this information wasn't entirely surprising.
Maybe they'd noticed things they couldn't quite articulate. Changes in Adrian's behavior. Inconsistencies in his decision-making. Orders that didn't match his established personality.
But loyalty and institutional hierarchy had prevented them from questioning royal authority directly.
"Sir," one of the younger guards said hesitantly, "we did notice that His Majesty seemed... unwell lately. But General Cassius assured us it was just the stress of ruling."
"General Cassius has been the source of that stress," Adrian said, his voice stronger now that some of the poison was working its way out of his system. "He's been using my illness to control royal policy."
The captain looked like a man trying to process information that challenged everything he thought he knew about palace security and chain of command.
"Where is the General now?" he asked.
"Unknown. But he was armed with more of the toxin that's been used against the king. Consider him extremely dangerous."
The captain nodded, already reaching for his radio to alert the search teams.
"Your Majesty, what are your orders?"
Adrian straightened his shoulders, and I could see him consciously taking back authority that had been stolen from him.
The change was remarkable. As the poison cleared his system, his natural intelligence and leadership instincts were reasserting themselves.
"First, medical attention. I want every trace of toxin cleared from my system. Second, I want General Cassius found and arrested. Third, I want a full review of every policy decision made in the past six months."
"And the military situation?" the captain asked carefully.
Adrian looked at me with an expression of dawning horror. "What military situation?"
"The war you declared against the resistance factions. The one that's been going on for the past year."
"I declared war on supernatural resistance groups?"
The confusion on his face was completely genuine. He had no memory of the decisions that had torn our community apart.
"Under Cassius's advice. You signed orders authorizing military action against civilian populations. Authorized detention of children with unusual abilities. Authorized experiments on captured supernatural subjects."
The horror on Adrian's face was absolute. "I would never... I couldn't have..."
"You were too sick to understand what you were signing. Cassius was feeding you documents and telling you they were routine administrative matters."
Adrian sank into one of the ornate chairs that lined the hall. "My God. How many people have died because of orders I signed while poisoned?"
"We can deal with guilt later," I said firmly. "Right now, we need to focus on stopping any ongoing operations."
Adrian looked up at the captain with authority I hadn't seen from him in months. "I want all military actions halted immediately. All prisoners released. All experimental programs shut down."
"Sir, that's going to require—"
"I don't care what it requires. Do it. Now."
The captain saluted and began issuing rapid orders into his radio.
I could hear him coordinating with military commanders, explaining that previous orders were being countermanded by direct royal decree.
There would be confusion. Resistance. Questions about chain of command and legal authority.
But Adrian's word was still law, and the system would eventually comply.
"Kael," Adrian said quietly, "what about the charges against your family? The threats against your son?"
"What charges?"
"Cassius said your wife was a political threat. That your son's abilities made him dangerous to public safety. That detention was necessary for community protection."
"More lies to justify keeping us apart. To make sure I was focused on running resistance operations instead of investigating what was really happening here."
Adrian buried his head in his hands. "He played us against each other perfectly."
"Yes. But it's over now."
"Is it? The damage has been done. The trust has been broken. The supernatural community will never accept me as a legitimate ruler after this."
"That depends on what you do next."
Adrian looked up at me with eyes that were fully alert for the first time in months. "What do you suggest?"
"Start by proving that Cassius was the real enemy. Show the supernatural community that you were as much a victim as they were."
"And then?"
"Then we rebuild. Together."
The words felt strange coming out of my mouth. For the past year, I'd been fighting against royal authority. Now I was suggesting cooperation with it.
But Adrian wasn't the enemy I'd been fighting. He was another victim of Cassius's manipulation.
The real enemy was systematic dehumanization. Institutional prejudice. The belief that some people mattered less than others.
Cassius had used that prejudice to turn us against each other while he pursued his own agenda.
The best revenge would be proving that cooperation was stronger than division.
