Luna. Chapter 122
(Lyra's POV)
"There's something I need to tell you," Magnus said as we left Sage's hospital room.
I looked at him, noting the way he avoided my eyes. "What?"
"It's about my feelings for you."
My heart sank. This was the conversation I'd been dreading.
"Magnus—"
"Let me say this, please. I've been carrying it around for too long."
We found a quiet corner in the hospital corridor, away from the bustle of nurses and visitors.
"I'm in love with you," he said simply. "I have been for years. Not just fond of you, not just caring about you as family. Actually, completely, stupidly in love with you."
The words hit me like a physical blow, even though part of me had always suspected.
"Magnus..."
"I know you don't feel the same way. I've always known. But I needed to say it out loud, especially now that Kael's back."
"Why now?"
"Because after seeing Sage in that hospital bed, after realizing how close we came to losing people we love, I realized that silence is a luxury none of us can afford anymore."
I studied his face, seeing the vulnerability beneath his usual composed exterior.
"How long have you known?"
"Known that I love you? Since about six months after I moved in to help with Asher. Known that you'd never love me back? Since the day Kael walked back into your life."
"You saw how I looked at him."
"I saw how your entire world lit up when he smiled at you. I saw you come alive in ways I'd never been able to inspire."
The pain in his voice made my chest ache.
"Magnus, you are one of the most important people in my life. You've been my rock, my constant, my partner in raising Asher—"
"But I'm not your mate."
"No. You're not."
"And there's no version of this where you could learn to love me the way you love him."
I wanted to lie, to soften the blow, but he deserved honesty.
"No. There isn't."
He nodded, accepting the answer with a dignity that made me admire him even more.
"I needed to hear you say it. I needed to know for certain that I wasn't giving up something that could have been real."
"What we have is real, Magnus. Just not romantic."
"I know. And what we have is precious to me. I don't want to lose it because of feelings you can't return."
"You won't lose it. You're family, Magnus. You always will be."
"Even now that Kael's back?"
"Especially now that Kael's back. Asher loves you. You've been the most consistent father figure in his life."
"But not his father."
"Biology doesn't make someone a parent. Love and commitment do. You've been more of a father to Asher than many biological fathers are to their children."
Magnus was quiet for a moment, processing this.
"What happens now?" he asked.
"Now you find someone who can love you the way you deserve to be loved."
"That's not what I meant."
"I know what you meant. Now we continue being family. Now you continue being Uncle Magnus to Asher and my dear friend. Now we work together to keep everyone safe from the Ashwalkers."
"And my feelings?"
"Will fade eventually. Or change into something sustainable. But they won't destroy what we've built together unless you let them."
"You sound very certain about that."
"I am certain. Because I know you, Magnus. I know your character. You're not the kind of man who lets unrequited love turn into resentment or bitterness."
"How do you know?"
"Because if you were, you would have walked away years ago instead of staying to help raise another man's child."
He smiled for the first time since our conversation began. "You have a point."
"I usually do."
"Modest too."
"One of my many virtues."
We stood in comfortable silence for a moment, the weight of unspoken feelings finally lifted.
"Magnus?"
"Yeah?"
"Thank you."
"For what?"
"For telling me the truth. For not letting this fester into something that could hurt our friendship. For being brave enough to have this conversation."
"Thank you for not making it awkward or dramatic."
"Trust me, I wanted to. But we don't have time for drama right now."
"Because of the Ashwalkers."
"Because of everything. Our lives are complicated enough without adding relationship drama to the mix."
Magnus straightened his shoulders, and I could see him consciously shifting back into his role as protector and advisor.
"So what's our next move?"
"Our next move is to go home and help Kael figure out how to keep Asher safe while we plan our counterattack."
"And after that?"
"After that, we hope we're all still alive to have normal problems like unrequited love and complicated family dynamics."
"You think we'll survive this?"
I thought about Sage lying in that hospital bed, about the photos of ritualistic killings, about the creatures who could take down experienced fighters in minutes.
"I think we have to," I said simply. "Because the alternative is unthinkable."
Magnus nodded. "Then we survive it."
"All of us," I agreed.
As we walked back through the hospital toward the exit, I felt peaceful.
Magnus would find his way through his feelings for me. Sage would recover from her injuries. Kael and I would figure out how to be partners and parents together.
And somehow, someway, we would protect Asher from the darkness that was coming for him.
Because that's what families did.
They fought for each other, no matter the odds.
And we were family, all of us, in every way that mattered.
