The Alpha King's Mistress Chapter 107: News
As the last car carrying Jake, Samantha, and Charlie disappeared into the night, I waved, a faint smile playing on my lips despite the heavy feeling churning within me. Two hours had melted away in conversation, a welcome break from the swirling thoughts plaguing me. Yet, even in the middle of the laughter and shared stories, a knot of unease remained in my chest.
I stole another glance down the hallway where Nicholas disappeared earlier. The familiar desire to go back to the cabin, my temporary haven, tugged at me. But a heavy
But before I could act on it, Layla appeared in the doorway, her brow furrowed in concern. "Where are you going, Florence?"
I forced a smile, swallowing the lump forming in my throat. "Just back to the cabin," I offered, already turning towards the door.
Layla's eyes widened, blocking my path. "Back to the cabin? Are you crazy? You can't leave without Nicholas's permission. You did it one time the other day and let’s say the Alpha was a little annoyed"
I remember the night I went to the cabin the day before the council meeting and the guard I talked to that night.
I cleared my throat, “How The guard? He's alright, isn't he?"
Layla chuckled softly. "He's fine, but a little shaken up. The Alpha wasn't exactly pleased, to say the least. Anyway, how about a slumber party in my room? We can catch up and you can relax."
The last thing I craved was another conversation, but the prospect of facing Nicholas alone filled me with equal dread.
"Thank you, Layla," I said, my voice weary. "But I think I just need some rest."
A flicker of concern crossed Layla's face, but she nodded reluctantly. "Alright," she sighed, turning to guide me back towards the guest room.
Just then, Isaac appeared at the entrance, his gaze flitting between me and Layla.
"Where are you two headed?" he asked.
Layla explained, "I was just going to show Florence to her room."
Isaac's gaze lingered on me for a moment, a flicker of something unreadable passing through his dark eyes. I raised my brow, sensing that he had something to say.
“You should do your work, Layla. I’ll show him to her room” he offered seriously.
Layla glared at him and flicked her hair, “You just need to remind me of my work, didn't you?” she turned to me with a dramatic, “I gotta go, Florence. Let’s do some girl’s day tomorrow! Gayle was stuck on her work today as well so we three can have fun!”
I smiled at her and nodded, “Sure”
With a final pointed look in Isaac's direction, Layla sauntered away.
"Alone is good," I murmured, as I started walking towards the hallway leading to Nicholas's room.
Isaac fell into step beside me, still in his usual stoic demeanor.
"I know things have been difficult lately," he began, his voice surprisingly gentle. "But I wanted to let you know that Nicholas will be speaking with Samantha tonight. For a moment, my heart clenched at the news. Despite everything, a pang of guilt flickered within me.
"Is that so?" I replied, my voice barely above a whisper.
Isaac studied me for a moment, “Frankly, Samantha's actions can endanger the entire pack not just you, so the punishment was lighter than what she rightfully deserved"
“Why are you saying this to me? I am sure you're Nicholas doesn't know this”
He shrugs, “I just want to come clean since I think it would not be fair for you”
“What are you saying?”
“Remember our deal that in exchange for you agreeing to go to the council meeting, I would help you become Luna?”
“Yes”
“I think you don't need my help anymore since what happened yesterday was enough”
I stopped mid-step, frowning, confused at what I just heard. “What do you mean?”
He paused, then added softly, "I believe the Alpha might be falling for you."
I blinked, processing his words. It was like an echo in my ears.
"Falling for me?" I scoffed. “You've got to be shitting me”
Isaac chuckled softly. "Berion lost control when you were hurt. That's a sure sign of a deep connection, a mate bond forming. And the way he looked at you when you arrived... well, let's just say it wasn't just a concern I saw."
Honestly, his insights left me speechless. Could it possibly be true? Was Nicholas starting to like me?
Isaac offered a reassuring smile. "With Samantha gone, you're well on your way to becoming Luna"
I don't know what to say to what he just said so I changed the subject instead. “Berion. Is that the name of Nicholas’s wolf?”
“Hmm” he grinned, “Sounds cool right?”
I nodded, a smile forming on my lips since I could feel how happy my wolf—Nasya knew the name of his mate.
“It is” I couldn't help but smile back, a flicker of warmth spreading through me at the thought of my own wolf, Nasya, knowing the name of her mate.
We reached the foot of the grand staircase leading to Nicholas's bedroom. I turned to Isaac.
"You can leave me here. The room is just upstairs."
He glanced at the stairs and sighed, "Okay then, as you wish" he said, before he turned and walked away.
With a deep breath, I began to climb the stairs. The encounter with Isaac had left me with more questions than answers. As I reached the landing, I caught a glimpse of a maid scurrying down the hallway, her red hair and tanned skin momentarily catching my eye. An odd feeling of unease washed over me, but exhaustion from the day's events quickly overshadowed it.
Pushing open the door to the guest room, I collapsed onto the bed, the weight of the day pressing down on me. My mind raced with revelation that the Lycan who saved me was Nicholas’s cousin, and the punishment of Samantha.
And as I drifted off, a single question echoed in the silence of the room: What should I do now?
