The Alpha King's Mistress Chapter 90: Nuts For Lunch
After almost an hour, Nicholas finally concluded the meeting, "Thank you all for your time. We'll reconvene if necessary." He turned to the council, "Now, let's enjoy our lunch."
Layla nodded to the women in suits, and they all went to the council, taking the black folders. Then maids came, bringing in the food.
“Thanks," I whispered to the maid who put my plate in front of me.
She simply smiled and politely left the hall. However, when I looked at my plate, I just wanted to facepalm since it was filled with an assortment of nuts, unlike the others who had a variety of dishes. I couldn't help but raise an eyebrow.
Shit. Talk about being unlucky!
Nicholas, in conversation with Clifford, was interrupted by Samantha.
"Is there something wrong?" she innocently said.
But it was easy to spot the happy expression in her eyes while looking at my plate. Don't tell me this bitch……
Nicholas glanced at me, and then his expression turned into a frown at my plate loaded with nuts. Without missing a beat, he called over a maid, "Can you please change her food? No nuts."
The maid hesitated, her eyes darting nervously. "I'm sorry, Alpha, but all the food has nuts as an ingredient."
Nicholas' expression tightened, "Then ask the chef to prepare it again with no nuts."
"How unfortunate," Samantha said. She seemed to be reveling in every bit of my discomfort.
“Do not eat the food,” he ordered me.
One council member, a hint of judgment in his gaze, asked, "Is she allergic to nuts?"
“Ye—” Samantha tried to cut in, but I beat her to it.
"No, I just don't like the taste of it," I nonchalantly said.
Nicholas frowned, and he just received a discreet kick under the table from me. He groaned, looking at me like I had gone crazy, but I ignored him and turned to the council, giving my best sweet smile as I encouraged everyone to enjoy their meal.
“Please, let us enjoy our meal.”
I can't let them know that I am allergic to nuts. I don't want Nicholas to be a laughing stock. Honestly, it was okay if they had no idea if I could shift or not, but the two-faced Samantha wanted to lay out all my weaknesses on the table.
I sighed, tightened my grip on the fork, ready to eat the meal. Well, it's not like I have a choice—
Nicholas had deftly swapped our plates, making my eyes widened. His plate had just a few nuts compared to mine. But it's not just that I was shocked. Only mates or Alpha and Luna pairs were known for such actions. Meanwhile, Samantha was frozen in her seat. Despite the curious stares, I gathered myself and began to eat.
Looking at the table, I let out a forceful chuckle, "Nuts can be tasty, but my plate was just full of them," eliciting laughter from some council members.
Keith's gaze lingered on me, but I dismissed it, focusing on picking a piece of meat that had fewer nuts. I noticed Nicholas stealing glances at me, along with Layla and Isaac.
As I brought the meat to my mouth, I swear it was hard to swallow since I knew what effect it would bring to me. Several council members expressed their satisfaction with the food.
“This is delicious”
“Agreed. The flavors are exquisite.”
Nicholas cleared his throat, turning to the council, “I'm glad you all enjoy it. Our pack and chefs take pride in providing the best for our guests.”
I smiled, trying to stay engaged in the conversation at the table, carefully selecting the parts of my meal with fewer nuts. It was only my third bite, and I began to feel an itchiness on my tongue and throat.
Remaining composed, I moved on to the vegetables. However, a small piece contained nuts, and I swallowed hard, struggling to conceal the increasing itchiness and redness of my skin. Thankfully, Nicholas's coat provided some cover, revealing only a small portion of my neck. But my skin issues remained.
Attempting to eat at least half of my plate, I failed to comprehend the ongoing conversations and laughter at the table. The itchiness and redness on my skin intensified. Glancing around, I noticed that all the council members had finished their meals.
Feeling the difficulty in breathing increasing, I knew it was time to excuse myself. I glanced at Nicholas, tapping his left hand on the table, "Uhm…I think I need to go—"
Before I could continue, a council member cut in, "Nicholas, would you mind giving us a tour of your impressive pack?"
Nicholas looked at me, focusing on my face and neck, "I appreciate your interest, but my Beta here is more than capable of providing you with a detailed tour. Then, please excuse us."
Without waiting for their response, he grabbed my wrist, gently pulling me away from the dining hall.
“Wait.”
I maintained a facade of composure, smiling at the council members as if everything was normal. I even executed a quick bow. Meanwhile, Nicholas wore an expression of annoyance and stoicism.
As he pulled me away, my gaze caught Keith looking at us while reaching for his wine, and Samantha was glaring at me.
"Oh, that works for us. We look forward to the tour, then!"
The last thing that registered was the sound of the door being quickly shut by the warriors guarding it. Almost immediately, my legs wobbled beneath me, and Nicholas swiftly caught me just in time.
Covering his mouth with my hand, I signaled the need for silence. Breathing became a challenge, and my chest tightened.
“Fck, I told you not to eat,” Nicholas grumbled, hoisting me up in a bridal style. We moved away from the meeting hall, with warriors following at a respectful distance. Sweat formed on my forehead, and each breath became a struggle.
"Florence, what's happening? Can you hear me?!"
Gasping and blinking away dizziness, I replied, "I-I just need to go home and get my….”
“I know, I know. I already alerted a doctor. You will be okay, so keep your eyes open for me, okay?”
His words seemed distant as my senses began to fade, barely registering my wolf's frantic cries in my mind.
“C-can't breathe.”
