The Alpha King's Mistress Chapter 66: Truth About Gayle
The rain provided the only soundtrack, a soft patter against the car's roof, as Jake continued to fix his gaze on me.
After a stretch of minutes, he looked away, his laughter tinted with disbelief and pain.
“Damn it. I'm screwed,” he muttered, “So, that’s why you seemed so hurt whenever you saw Samantha and him. He's your mate.”
I tried to lighten the mood, “I guess I am not good at masking my emotions now huh”
"Damn. I'm such an idiot," he groaned, banging his forehead lightly against the steering wheel.
I couldn't help but chuckle at his reaction, "Hey, cut that out."
He turned to me, a faint redness now decorating his forehead, "But seriously, why did he introduce you just as his mistress?"
“Well….he dont want me. He wants someone strong for you guys. And I don't fit the criteria”
I can't believe how I am still putting a good image of Nicholas here.
He shakes his head, “You know sometimes I think my Alpha is an idiot. I would follow his order in a heartbeat to kill someone. That’s how loyal I am to him but he messed up this time”
I grinned, “Tell me about it.”
“How could he not want you?” he held my gaze, “When you are so perfect?”
Feeling a pang in my heart, not from pain or jealousy, but from regret that Jake wasn't my destined mate, was a sensation I'd remember for a long time. If only I could choose like humans, I'd choose him.
I shifted my gaze away, taking a deep breath and clearing my throat. “Yeah, he was an idiot for passing on someone so perfect, right? But, hey, his loss.”
He smiled but it didn't reach his eyes. He started the engine again and the car moved once again. The rest of the ride was filled with silence. I tucked the paper he gave me into my pocket.
As we approached my cabin, I hesitated for a moment, not quite knowing what to say but I gotta say something.
“Well, this is an interesting evening," I said when the car stopped in front of my cabin, “Thanks for the map”
Jake flashed a grin, though it didn't quite reach his eyes. "Use it whenever you make a decision but let this stay between us…..Luna”
I unbuckled my seatbelt and thought for a moment before facing him, “When I escape, I promise to say hi to you but you must make sure my secret just stays between us”
He jokingly salutes to me, “Copy that”
“Take care, and thanks for the lift,”
With a parting chuckle, I stepped out into the still-pouring rain, waving at Jake's retreating car. Then I hurried up the steps to my front door, shivering from the chill.
I rummaged through my bag for the keys, and a strange sensation washed over her. A faint prickling at the nape of my neck made me pause. Something wasn’t right.
With a hesitant glance upward, my breath hitched. There, standing a few feet away, was Gayle. She walked towards me, rain-soaked and clad entirely in black as if she was unbothered by the rain.
"Gayle?" I furrowed my brow, puzzled. “What are you doing here?”
“Florence,” she began, her tone icy and unfamiliar. “I strongly advise you to cut ties with Jake.”
I was taken aback, “What?”
She then took out keys from her coat’s pocket, extending them towards me. I take it from her, staring at it confusedly. It was my keys. So I did lose it. My grip on the keys tightened as my gaze went serious in a snap.
Now, I know who was watching me.
“You've been tailing me,” I stated flatly.
Gayle nodded without a hint of remorse. “It's part of my job.”
“Since when?” My tone was sharper than I intended, disbelief coloring my words.
“Since you set foot in this cabin.”
I can't help the feeling of betrayal tainting my heart. We talked like we are not friends at this moment.
“You know….. I have a strong sense of awareness of my surroundings. But I only just recently felt that someone was watching me. I must say you’re good”
“It needs to be like that since I am a tracker. The best tracker of the Moonstone Pack”
And here I thought the best of them was those men who shot me when I escaped the first time. I smirked, nodding. That’s why I didn't even notice anything. Even a fcking scent or sound. She was a tracker. Damn. Lycan trackers exceeded my expectations.
“I see. That makes sense. So, what are you doing revealing all that to me”
Gayle sighed, “I am not here as someone who was ordered to watch over you. I am here as Gayle only and not the Delta for the Alpha. I will not report what happened tonight but decide wisely”
I raised a brow, “What do you mean?”
She gestured to my pocket, “Whatever is in your pocket, don't use it. I suggest you burn it”
“You knew”
At this moment, I am becoming a fan of hers.
Gayle nodded, “We are trackers not because we are good at hiding ourselves in the shadows but because we have sharper eyes than the rest. Jake’s car was not tinted and just the small peek of the paper from my position on the trees, I already knew what it was”
I took a deep breath, “You can't tell me what to do”
“I know. I have no right to do that or anyone at that. But I can give some advice” She stares at me seriously, “Stay longer with us. Don't do anything that would lead the Alpha to hurt you again and lose his trust in you for the second time. You cannot escape the Alpha King, Florence. And you don't want him to lose his trust in you again”
I laughed like really laughed that there were tears in my eyes when I calmed down. The cold from the rain was long forgotten.
“Trust me, Gayle. Whether I stay or not with him, he will lose his trust in me eventually. He will eventually realize I am not to be trusted so you're advice was really nothing to me”
I turned away from him, fumbling the keys to open my door. My hands are shaking.
“You might not realize it but you are becoming important to the Alpha. We’ve never seen him treat anyone the way he treats you. Everything will fall into place if you stay with us……Luna”
I held the keys tighter as I controlled my emotions before I spoke, “Someone put a box of rats on my doorstep yesterday. If you knew who it was, please inform me”
I didn't wait for her reply and entered my house, shutting the door. I went straight to my bedroom and made a beeline to my bathroom. Once inside, I peeled off my drenched clothes and soaked in the hot water to drown the tears streaming down my cheeks.
