The Alpha King's Mistress Chapter 89: The Incident
I looked away and I was about to take another sip of my wine when Nicholas discreetly moved my wine glass without looking at me and gestured to the water. I couldn't help but wonder if he somehow knew about my fever.
"Council, I want you to look at the screen," Nicholas demanded.
In a snap, a picture of a burned land flashes on the screen. Everyone looked at the screen. I looked away, not liking the horrible image knowing that most of it was dead bodies.
"Last month, we received disturbing information about the Swiftmane Pack. The entire pack was wiped out, and the whole place was burned to erase any evidence. It's a massacre. It is not a secret that the Swiftmane Pack had been distancing themselves from us. I tried sending my men last year when we received reports of pack members disappearing, but the alpha refused to cooperate. We didn't get any updates, reports, or calls from them for years. It was a silent disaster waiting to happen."
"Why wasn't any help sent in sooner?" one member asked.
"Just like what I have said in our last virtual conference meeting, we didn't have any information to act upon. No reports, no communication. It seems the alpha was hiding the internal issues within the pack. I sent men, but they never allowed them to enter their pack and even threatened my men.”
“We need to address this immediately."
"Agreed. That’s why I sent my men to investigate and find out who's behind this. Swift action is necessary to prevent such tragedies in the future."
"Did you find any leads?"
Nicholas nodded, "Yes, our team discovered a survivor in the pack."
A blurry picture of Sara entering a convenience store appeared on the screen. I composed myself, ensuring no emotion crossed my features, especially with Keith's gaze seemingly fixed on me.
"That was a very important lead. You have such skilled men, Alpha Nicholas,” another commented.
“Aside from their skills, their motivation to work this case was also great due to their loyalty to me.”
“Do you know where they're headed?" someone chimed in.
I turned to Nicholas, waiting for his answer. Surprisingly, he shook his head.
“Unfortunately, no.”
I raised an eyebrow, puzzled. I was sure he knew they would be heading north.
Mr. Agares questioned, "How do you know the survivor belonged to the Swiftmane Pack?"
"My team managed to retrieve a file containing the profiles of the Swiftmane Pack and the profile of the girl was included"
Another Council Member, "Who would do such a horrible thing to them?"
Nicholas leaned back in his chair, eyes fixed on the screen. Another picture flashed—Alpha Jason and a group of men.
"The men in the picture are suspected rogues and members of a Mad Crest Pride. Something might have happened, leading to the rogue attack on the Swiftmane Pack"
The council members exchanged glances, “So, you are thinking that the Swiftmane Pack has some connection with the rogue group?”
“Yes. That is what most evidence we gathered was pointing at”
“Then it was possible that they were the ones who attacked the pack as well,” the kind-looking man replied.
“That’s why we are trying to locate the survivor to gather information”
Keith suddenly blurted out with a raised brow, "How are you so sure those men were rogues?"
"We've been following the group for some time, and I managed to confirm it," Nicholas replied with casual confidence,
Keith nodded, but he was tapping his finger on the table. His body language suggests something—he was thinking.
"We need to capture Makayla Ellis if we want to end the Mad Crest Pride," he added.
Some members agreed to Keith and it takes a lot of willpower not to roll my eyes at them.
“If she's the key to dismantling the Pride, then we can't afford to delay”
Another member firmly said, “Agreed. Let's get this done and capture that cunning spy!”
“I know all your sentiments. And I assure you, I am doing my best in capturing her” Nicholas said, closing his hand and placing his arm toward the table, giving each member a gaze.
"However, saying Makayla Ellis was the key figure who was controlling the Mad Crest Pride was out of line. We still don’t have a piece of solid evidence that Makayla Ellis is the mind in orchestrating these rogue attacks. But I agree that it is important that we catch her. However, as of now, ensuring the safety of our packs is more important. With that, I've also planned to dispatch some of my skilled warriors to assist packs in vulnerable areas," he added.
A middle-aged man sitting at the end of the line said, “Thank you, Alpha King. Your swift action is reassuring”
“I agree that the safety of our packs should always be our top priority”
A man chuckled, "It would be funny that one of us would be Makayla’s allies right?"
If the man thought it was funny, the people in the room were not. Everyone went silent as the man was forced to grab the glass of water.
I tiled my head, staring at the clear liquid of the water in my other glass and softly said, "Well, thinking of it, he must have a point. Like every person on the planet, trust is a luxury but maybe more for a spy like Makayla Ellis. And rogues, especially those with questionable allegiances, are hard to rely on. It's a risk, and I doubt a spy would willingly align with them. Plus, rogues tend to be unpredictable."
Nicholas looked at me and I just shrugged nonchalantly, “Just a thought”
A few council members exchanged glances and murmurs in the room until some agreed with me.
“She has a point, Alpha Nicholas. Trust is indeed a rare commodity, especially in our world but especially for a spy”
“And with rogues, you never know when they might turn on you. There’s a higher chance she was not the mastermind”
Samantha, with a smug expression, interjected, "Makayla killed Nicholas's cousin. She's guilty, no doubt about it."
Keith added, staring at me, "If that spy was innocent, why didn't she surrender willingly? Guilt makes people do strange things."
An uneasy silence filled the room. Nicholas's gaze flickered, and he responded calmly, "We'll cross that bridge when we get there. Right now, our priority is securing the safety of our packs. Any suggestions on enhancing security measures?"
