The Alpha King's Mistress Chapter 123: Surprise Reconcilation?

**Florence's POV**

The days blurred together since my last conversation with Sonya and the encounter with Percival and Quinn. Each passing day was etched onto the rough stone wall, a makeshift calendar marking my time in this wretched prison. Five became six, then seven. Each tick felt like an eternity, my worry and concern mounting with each passing moment.

Lost in my thoughts, I was startled by a sound I hadn't heard in days—the approaching footsteps.

The creak of the rusty hinges filled the air. I braced myself, expecting the usual guards, perhaps even Nicholas himself. But the faces that greeted me were a surprise.

Clifford stood at the forefront, his usually stoic expression tinged with an unfamiliar emotion. Beside him stood Isaac, his face inscrutable. But it was the two figures at the back that truly shocked me—Layla, her dark hair pulled back in a tight braid, and Gayle, her fierce eyes softened with something akin to regret.

Shock rendered me speechless. What were they doing here? Confusion must have shown on my face because Clifford cleared his throat, his voice tight.

"Hey," he began, his tone hesitant.

I frowned. “What are you all doing here?”

Clifford shifted uncomfortably, his hand tucked into his jacket's pocket.

“We... um... we're here to apologize. We've seen the evidence you gathered, and we're now certain you didn't kill Baron,” he said, almost avoiding my gaze.

Isaac chimed in, “Clifford was right. We're all sorry if you'll accept it, of course.”

“We're sorry, Florence,” Gayle added, fidgeting with her fingers.

An apology? From them? This was unexpected.

Layla, her face flushed crimson, did something entirely out of character. She sank to her knees, her gaze pleading.

"Florence," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion, "I… I'm so sorry. For doubting you, for slapping you. I had no right. I am so sorry!"

My breath hitched in my throat. The memory of Layla's slap, the sting of her hand on my cheek. But seeing her here, remorse etched on her beautiful face started to chip away at the wall of anger I'd built around myself.

The others followed suit, each expressing their regret, their apologies heartfelt and raw.

Clifford continued, "We know… we know how wrong we were. I should have known better. We should have known better."

I smiled, shaking my head, "It's alright. I understand. If I were in your position, I would feel the same. Your feelings and actions are all valid.”

The response, simple as it was, seemed to take them aback. They looked at me, their expressions a mix of surprise and relief. Layla, who had been fidgeting nervously throughout the exchange, sobbed.

"No, Florence," she choked out, her voice trembling. "It's not alright. You shouldn't have to understand. I… I slapped you. We… we've been mean to you. There's no excuse for that."

“Because I betrayed all of you,” I smiled sadly. “I think we're quits now.”

Layla bit her lip, tears finally spilling down her cheeks. “Please….. forgive us."

I looked at each of them in turn. "I never hated or resented you from the start, so there's no need for forgiveness,"

A small smile touched Isaac's lips, the first flicker of warmth in his eyes, Gayle's shoulders relaxing slightly.

Gayle grinned. "Then I guess we're good now, huh?"

I chuckled lightly. “So, what happens now?"

Layla took a deep breath, her gaze flickering towards Clifford. "Well, the Alpha has already given orders and met with the other council members. I think they'll start arresting people affiliated with Keith and their illegal activities.”

“She's right. The evidence you gathered for us is strong enough to put them in jail for a long time or even get a death sentence,” Clifford added.

"That's good to hear,” I replied, finding some relief in the news. It was a glimmer of justice after so many days of turmoil.

Gayle continued, "But it's becoming clear that it won't be easy. Others are being protected by their packs.”

“So the pack is busy as hell,” Isaac grumbled.

I smirked. “Then why are you here gossiping with me?”

Isaac grunted. “We're hiding.”

All of us shared a laugh at that. Then Layla stepped forward, a brown paper bag clutched in her hand.

"While you wait," she said, her voice hopeful, "we brought you these."

She knelt and pushed the bag through the bars. Inside, I glimpsed a fresh change of clothes - a simple tunic and trousers along with a few dresses.

"Thank you," I said gratefully.

“I can't stand seeing you in those plain clothes. You deserve something prettier,” Layla grumbled, shaking her head.

I just smiled.

Gayle suddenly spoke up. "The Moon Festival is coming up soon," she rumbled, her voice a low murmur. "Perhaps… Perhaps Alpha Nicholas might allow you some time outside then."

The Moon Festival. The name sounded like a fun celebration, but not for me.

"Outside? I doubt it,” I echoed, my hopes not rising too high.

Clifford replied, “The Alpha has a plan. I can't say what it is, but I assure you everything will be fine. You just need to wait a little longer.”

“Clifford's right. We knew the Alpha would have a plan for you,” Layla joined in.

Taking a deep breath, I realized what I needed to do that day. I forced a smile.

“I'll wait then.”

They looked at each other and bid me farewell.

“We will visit you soon,” Layla said, waving.

With a final, hesitant goodbye, they turned to leave. Clifford lingered for a second, looking at me.

"Florence, I know that your relationship with the Alpha was a mess. But you need to trust him. Trust his feelings for you,” he said before following the others.

I was left alone, staring blankly at nothing. No matter how I want to trust Nicholas or trust whatever his plan was, I already have an ultimatum. It is me that needs to end my problem. Keith was my mission from the start.
