OLIVIA

“I will go through this in my spare time and get back to you. Presently, I just want to rest my head. I just got back not quite long ago,” I told the lawyer.

On her way out of the house, I apologized for how I welcomed her into my home.

I also explained how Cyril and Rene had been making my life miserable over the past few days.

“I don't have much to say to you. Just endure. It's going to be over soon.” That was the advice I received from the lawyer before her final exit.

After Selena’s exit, I went to my newly furnished apartment and started reading through the documents carefully.

I had a feeling that Cyril was gonna show up, and he was the last person I expected to see.

As I read through, I heard a knock on the door.

I frowned because I thought it was Kate. I never wanted anyone to interrupt my leisure time.

“I am coming, Kate. A moment, please. You don't have to keep banging the door like a thief,” I shouted.

I dropped the documents on the sofa and went to open the door for Kate.

Behold, it was Cyril and not Kate. He walked into the house looking drunk.

He pushed me aside just to find his way inside. If I wasn't vigilant enough, I would have hit my head against the wall.

“What are you doing here?” I covered my nose as I spoke, trying to block out the awful smell.

“What sort of stupid question is that? The last time I checked, this is my house, and I decide when and how I walk in,” he snarled at me. He could barely even stand on both legs.

He proceeded to throw a document on the ground. “That's my copy of the divorce papers.”

I rushed to pick it up but dropped it immediately. I couldn't even read through it when I had barely touched mine.

“Why do you want to destroy everything my family has built?” Cyril wept like a child who had just lost his mother.

“How did you know my house address? I can't recall disclosing that to you,” I panicked. I was too scared to move closer to him.

I didn’t doubt his capabilities despite his pathetic condition.

“Don't you dare question me. You're my wife. It doesn't cost me anything to find you. Just answer the damn question already. Why are you so ungrateful?” he yelled at me at the top of his voice.

He came closer to me threateningly while I edged backward, trying to save my life.

I couldn't predict what was going to happen in the next few minutes.

In the process of running away from Cyril, I slipped and fell to the ground, pleading for his mercy.

“Hahaha! Do you think you were going to get away with this? So tell me, who's the boss now?” Cyril bragged.

He was slowly removing his belt as if he was about to hit me with it.

I tried to run but couldn’t. My legs suddenly became too weak to stand, to the point where I felt like passing the night on the floor.

“I beg of you. Please don't hurt me,” I pleaded with Cyril as though my life depended on it.

“I shouldn't hurt you? Did you ever think of that before making your drastic decisions? Sorry to burst your bubble, bitch. Forgiveness isn’t in my dictionary. You are going to pay for everything you did to me,” he laughed, pulled off his belt, and was about to hit me when Kate showed up out of the blue and knocked Cyril out with a vase, making him pass out.

“What the heck just happened?” I was dumbfounded.

“I was watching closely. I had to act fast before he hurt you,” Kate explained as she rushed to help me off the ground.

Kate quickly checked his pulse and confirmed that Cyril was still breathing, which automatically meant he was alive.

“Holy moly,” I held my chest in relief.

I was terrified that Cyril might be dead. I had already imagined myself wearing a prison uniform.

As I struggled to gather my thoughts, Kate’s gaze flickered to Cyril’s divorce papers lying on the ground.

She picked them up and showed them to me. “He brought his divorce papers? And he even showed up looking drunk. Are you thinking what I’m thinking?”

“I don’t even know what else to think, Kate. The last time I spoke to him about the divorce, he walked away without uttering a single word. That made me believe I had nothing to worry about,” I admitted.

“You shouldn’t have folded your arms and done nothing. His silent treatment should have prepared you for a moment like this. I mean, you’ve been married to Cyril for so long now. You should be able to predict his moves,” Kate added, already thinking ahead of me.

“From what happened, you are definitely getting a favorable ruling at the court hearing,” Kate assured me.

I took my time to process what she said, and I realized she was right.

“We need to call the police immediately. We can't leave Cyril like this,” I suggested.

As much as I never wanted Cyril in my life anymore, I still didn’t wish him dead—especially not in my apartment.

“Brilliant suggestion. But what are you going to tell them? Remember, Cyril is the one on the ground,” Kate asked.

Her question made me wonder if I was even thinking straight.

“That he attacked us?” I guessed.

I wasn’t even sure of what I was saying. I just wanted to sound logical.

Kate giggled. “That’s one of the lamest reports ever. Don’t worry, I got this. But first, I need to dispose of the vase.”

Just like she said, she quickly got rid of the vase before calling the cops.

With her captivating story, I doubted I would be the one spending the rest of my life behind bars.
