OLIVIA

“Damn! This party is the bomb. See what we've been missing all along,” Kate told me at the party. She seemed to be having fun.

She wasn't far from the truth.

I can't recall the last time she attended a party of such magnitude.

Cyril is such a joy killer.

The son of a bitch is deprived of a life like this due to his insecurity.

“I am glad you're having fun. But don't get too drunk. We still got work for tomorrow,” I reminded Kate.

Adrian joined us some minutes later, shortly after I saw him with Uncle Dante.

“I hope you're having fun already?” he teased Kate.

“More than fun, Adrian. You've got no idea what this means to me. If Olivia doesn't get married to you, I will,” Kate joked as she continued sipping her vodka.

Then she stormed out to allow Adrian and me to have some moments of privacy alone.

“My uncle wants to see us. He asked me to bring you to his table,” Adrian said.

“Shall we?” He stretched his hand forward to hold mine.

 “Of course.

Why not?” I held his hand.

As we walked to his uncle's table, everyone focused their attention on us.

We weren't even married, yet everyone saw us as the SI unit of a perfect couple.

I felt a bit shy, but eventually, I became confident in myself.

I told myself that it was precisely what I wanted.

It wasn't my first time meeting with Uncle, but it was fun.

I had this nostalgic feeling I hadn't felt before.

“I heard everything that happened between you and the Penhurst. And trust me, I applaud the bravery. You're the strongest woman I know,” Dante sang my praises.

I felt like crying. It was such an emotional moment for me.

I didn't bother asking him how he found out about the events happening in my life.

It was apparent to me that Adrian might have told him everything.

 “Thank you, Uncle.

I am indeed grateful for your words of encouragement towards me. On the contrary, I think you should acknowledge Adrian. I mean, his unending support towards me,” I voiced out.

It would be so selfish of me to omit Adrian from my success story.

Without him, I wouldn't even stand a chance against the Penhurst Family, let alone survive the numerous assassination attempts on my life.

 “It's nothing.

I did it for the woman I love.

If the tables were turned, I am sure she would take a bullet for me,” Adrian praised me.

He kissed me in the presence of his uncle to demonstrate his love for me.

“Speaking of taking a bullet to prove one's loyalty, when are you two getting married? Or don't you think it's the time?” Uncle Dante asked.

The question nearly made me choke on my glass of wine. I was aware of his approval of our marriage.

But to the point of getting married? I never did see that coming.

“Are you okay? Or did I say something wrong?” Uncle Dante asked when he saw me getting choked over his question.

I glanced at Adrian, waiting to hear what he had to say. His response would determine my stance in his life.

I wouldn't want to repeat the mistake I made with Cyril in the name of love.

“Back to our question, when are you two getting married? Can't you see how you both have become the center of attraction to everyone? They all assumed you were married. Wouldn't it be fair to make their wishes come to pass?” Uncle Dante buttressed.

He dwelled on the matter extensively as though his life depended on it.

I noticed the stare from Adrian. He's probably waiting for me to speak first.

“Uncle, Olivia and I are taking things slowly. Currently, we just wanna focus on building our empire. We've been through a lot in the past. I want to assure you that when the time comes, we are gonna look into that direction,” Adrian responded without actually hitting the nail on the head.

That wasn't the response I expected from him. I wasn't sure why it took him so much to answer such a simple question.

 “If you insist.

Try not to waste too much time on this. Do enjoy the rest of the party,” Uncle Dante patted Adrian on the shoulder before he walked out.

 “Do you love me, Adrian?”

I tossed the question at him shortly after Dante's exit.

 “Of course I do.

 Where's this question coming from?”

 He responded but looked surprised.

“From the place of an impatient woman, Adrian. Why is it taking forever for you to pop the question? Don't you want to spend the rest of your life with me?” I lamented bitterly.

Despite how agitated I was, I still tried my best to ensure my voice wasn't too loud enough to disrupt the party.

The guests already viewed us as a couple. It would be a crime to start changing their thoughts about us.

“I am just waiting for that click to put a ring on your finger. Please keep in mind, we recently just moved to Paris. Like I told my uncle, we should focus on building our empire,” Adrian explained. There was no difference from what he told his uncle.

As I was about to respond, I heard a gunshot that forced everyone to run for safety.

Things took a horrible turn when some masked men invaded the hall and started shooting sporadically.

Immediately, Uncle Dante rushed in our direction and took us into hiding.

Relentlessly, one of the gunmen engaged us in a hot pursuit, preventing us from going into hiding.

While I ran, my thoughts flickered to Kate. I prayed silently for the host of heavens to keep her safe.

Tired of running, I slipped and fell to the ground. I tried to get on my feet, but I couldn't.

One of the gunmen got closer. He aimed the bullet at me, but Adrian was there to knock him off his feet.

Unfortunately, the bullet hit Uncle Dante in the chest, causing him to bleed profusely.

Seeing that they had the wrong person, the other gunmen left the place rushing.
