Divorced But Never Letting Go Chapter 137
ADRIAN
"Stop the damn car right away! I know what I heard. Would I be joking about something like this when I know what's at stake?" Kate screamed at me.
That was the moment I knew it wasn’t a joke, just like I had thought.
I stayed calm to observe the situation. Suddenly, I heard Olivia screaming. "Please don’t kill me! I don’t want to die. Somebody save me! I don’t deserve any of this. I am ready to give up an outrageous fee for my freedom!"
At that moment, I felt like punching myself in the face for doubting Kate when she initially revealed what she had heard.
"Do you believe me now? Why don't you apologize for doubting me?" Kate demanded.
I snapped. "Get down. We need to go inform the cops about our discovery."
As Kate and I stepped outside the vehicle, we saw a female cop approaching our direction. It was obvious that she had something important to say to us.
"I was about to meet you. What's your name again?" the female cop asked.
I glanced at Kate, waiting for her to respond, but the female cop made it clear that the question was directed at me.
I sighed and pointed to myself. "Oh, me? My name's Adrian. Is there a problem?"
"Yes, I knew it! Finally," the cop mumbled. She appeared to be super excited when she heard my name.
I stepped closer to her, my heart pounding after she had raised my blood pressure higher. "What’s the matter? Is there something you’re not telling us?"
"We heard a lady screaming for you to come save her. It's obvious that she is in danger. To clarify that she’s the one we’re looking for, I needed to confirm your name," she explained.
My eyes widened. I didn’t know what to say.
It wasn’t a coincidence that Kate and I had heard Olivia’s distressed voice just minutes ago.
"What a coincidence. That was the same thing my partner and I wanted to discuss with you. It’s a good thing you’re here now. We actually heard my girlfriend screaming and calling for my help," I said.
After listening to me, the female cop was relieved that she wasn’t hallucinating after all. She wasted no time calling the other policemen seated inside the car.
I watched them conversing in French. Although I wasn’t bothered, I knew the female cop would definitely translate everything into English for me.
Just as I had imagined, she came back to me moments later.
"So what was discussed between you guys? I am so eager to know," I asked her.
"To start with, my name’s Detective Lily Pulitzer," she finally introduced herself for the first time.
That was the only time I got to know her name. It hadn’t even dawned on me to ask her before.
I nodded in acknowledgment while waiting for her to divulge more information. I acted as if I cared about her name, but deep down, I didn’t. My only focus was on her next course of action.
"You both are going to stay back and wait for me while we trail the voice and rescue your girlfriend. Can you do that for me?" Detective Lily urged Kate and me.
It didn’t take long for Kate and me to disregard her decision.
From the way we immediately kicked against it, it was as though we had it all planned out.
"We are doing this for your safety. You both don’t have bulletproof jackets. What if you get shot?" Lily made another suggestion that ought to have made sense to any reasonable person.
Still, I wasn’t supporting it. Luckily for me, Kate was on my side too, which made things a lot easier.
"I’ve come too far to back out like a coward. This is the time I get to stand up for Olivia as a real man. Please—don’t deny me that privilege," I pleaded with Lily.
When she saw how dedicated Kate and I were, she had no choice but to grant our request. But it was on the condition that we would walk behind them and follow their commands.
"No problem. I just want to be there when the love of my life is being rescued," I accepted the condition without a second thought.
Kate remained silent—I had already spoken on her behalf. It was safe to say we were on the same page.
Quietly, Kate and I walked behind the cops as we searched for Olivia.
The whole situation was beginning to seem like a movie scene to me.
Movies—that’s where I usually witness things like this. Now, I was living it in real time.
As we arrived in the woods, Detective Lily raised an arm, forcing us to halt.
I tried to speak, but she hushed me. "Don’t say a word. I need to stay focused."
"Then make it snappy. Your silence is killing me. I don’t know what else to do at this point," I snapped, frustration seeping through my voice.
I couldn’t hide the anxiety that had succeeded in rubbing my face in the mud.
My impatience didn’t go unnoticed by Detective Lily, who turned around with an awkward glance. "Don’t you dare push me to the wall. If you keep acting like a child, I will be forced to leave. I’ve been in this game long before you can ever imagine."
Her warning, her yelling, and the rage in her voice sent tiny shivers down my spine. I felt more terrified than ever before.
Her words successfully put me in my place. I needed no one to tell me to stay humble.
After a few minutes of silence, she finally spoke. "I found her. I know exactly where she is. This place rings a bell in my head."
"You found her already?" My nostrils flared. That was the only thing I wanted to hear.
I couldn’t conceal my emotions. If given the opportunity, I would take the place of the cop.
