 My legs quivered as I stepped outside with Adrian. They suddenly felt too heavy to move, as if some unseen force was dragging me back.

 The moment Kate saw me approaching the car, she rushed forward and embraced me. I fought back my tears.

 She thought the kidnapping had broken me. She had no idea it was something else entirely.

 Adrian looked equally disturbed. Just like me, he wasn’t happy. Sadness was written all over his face.

 That was when Kate sensed something was wrong. She pulled away from my arms and turned to Adrian. “Can you please explain what's going on? I know this isn’t about the kidnapping, so don’t lie to me.”

 After Adrian narrated everything to her, Kate lost her composure and fumed. “What the fuck? That ain’t true! Olivia had nothing to do with what happened to Cyril. They barely even spoke because I was there to kick him out!”

 As much as I appreciated her defending me, I wished she had done it back in Lily’s office—to prove my innocence where it mattered.

 “Now I know why that bitch tried to blackmail Adrian into dumping you for her. She needs to be dealt with,” Kate declared boldly.

 I was about to get into the car when I stopped and turned toward her. “What did you just say?”

 She glanced at Adrian. “Wait, you never told her?”

 “Tell me what?” I stepped forward, wiping my tears.

 “Let’s forget about this. Y’all know we have to be in New York first thing tomorrow morning,” Adrian tried to brush it off.

 He was dodging the question, but I refused to let it go. I wasn’t leaving until I got answers.

 “I’ll do the talking,” Kate volunteered, stepping up when Adrian faltered.

 “No, I disagree. I want to hear it from the horse’s mouth,” I insisted.

 Adrian sighed deeply. He already knew I was referring to him.

 “I guess I have to do this anyway,” he muttered.

 He reached out to touch me, but I ignored him. My focus was on his words, nothing else.

 “Kate is right. Rene did try to manipulate me into leaving you for her. She made it obvious she had something to do with your kidnapping. That almost got to me, but I resisted,” Adrian confessed.

 “Kate, book the next available flight to New York. I have a score to settle with Rene,” I instructed and got into the car.

 I trusted Adrian enough to know he wouldn’t betray me for Rene.

 “Just so you know, I’m coming with you to New York. Your fight is mine, too,” Adrian assured me.

 I stared at him for a while, and in the next moment, my eyes brimmed with tears, ready to fall like a waterfall.

 I was lost for words, overwhelmed with gratitude for all the times he had stood by me.

 Maybe I hadn’t taken the time to truly appreciate him for all his sacrifices.

 I had only been in New York for a few days, and I was already fed up with explaining to the press that I had nothing to do with Cyril’s predicament.

 It was starting to seem like Rene had paid off every media outlet to drag my name through the mud.

 “The toxic, obsessed ex-wife who refuses to move on,” was just one of the many outrageous headlines I had seen.

 Reading the cruel comments almost pushed me to the brink of depression.

 No amount of explanation could prove my innocence to the world. The only people who believed me were Adrian and Kate.

 But that wasn’t enough—I wanted more. I wanted the trust of strangers who didn’t even know me.

 After everything I’d endured in New York, I vowed this would be the last time I ever set foot in this city.

 Just when I thought it was me against the media, Cyril’s family showed up, trying to manipulate me into confessing to a crime I never committed. They had every reason to believe I was responsible for Cyril’s condition.

 With the situation growing more intense, I found it impossible to step outside without being mobbed by the press.

 Not a day passed without them hounding me with questions about Cyril. Yet my answer remained the same: I was innocent.

 Not even my desperate cries for innocence could stop them.

 To protect myself, I instructed Kate to handle the investigation outside while I stayed back and focused on my legal defense.

 So far, the plan has worked. Not only was I free from the toxic press, but we were also making progress in the case.

 I heard someone call from outside my hotel room.

 I refused to get up. I wasn’t expecting anyone. I had already told Kate to take the day off so I could have some time to rediscover myself.

 As for Adrian, I had asked him to spend more time with his uncle, Dante, who had just returned from a business trip. It felt unfair to keep him away from his family when he had already dedicated so much of his time to me.

 The voice outside wouldn’t stop calling my name.

 Listening more closely, I recognized it—it was Kate.

 “What’s she doing here? I thought I gave her the day off,” I muttered to myself.

 Her tone caught my attention. She sounded overly excited, as though she had good news.

 That alone made me get out of bed. The only thing I craved right now was good news.

 I quickly changed and opened the door. Kate rushed in and hugged me tightly before pulling away.

 “So, what’s with the excitement? You just ruined my nap,” I yawned, heading back to bed.

 My eyes were still heavy with sleep, and a part of me wanted to drift off again.

 “The court adjourned the case for a week. And guess what? We’re getting a favorable ruling again—just like last time,” Kate revealed.

 She was practically buzzing with excitement.

 Under normal circumstances, I should have been thrilled, too.

 But I refused to celebrate too soon. Knowing I was up against the Penhurst supreme dynasty, I wasn’t expecting an easy fight.
