OLIVIA

After a failed attempt to kill me, the gunmen abandoned one of their members who had no gun in his possession.

As he tried to escape, Adrian pounced on him and struck a powerful punch that tossed the masked man to the ground.

As though that weren't enough, Adrian continued to punch the masked man until the police arrived at the scene and arrested him.

After the arrest, we all rushed to meet Uncle Dante, who was in a pool of blood, struggling to stay alive.

His eyes were slowly shutting down as we got to him.

"Don't leave me, Uncle. Please stay back," Adrian cried as he rested Uncle Dante's head on his lap.

That was my first time seeing Adrian cry. As I tried to console him, I fought back my tears.

"Please take care of Olivia. She's got a heart of gold. Don't let her slip away from your palms." Those were Uncle Dante's last words before he passed away.

All efforts to revive him proved abortive. He must have suffered severe internal bleeding as a result of the injury sustained from the gunshot.

It didn't take too long for some medical practitioners to arrive and take Dante's lifeless body away in an ambulance.

I wished it was all a dream. I wished that a cameraman would emerge out of the blue and say, "It's a prank. Uncle Dante isn't dead. Too bad you fell for it."

None of my wishes were granted. I was taken aback by reality.

Seeing how shattered Adrian was pierced my heart like a dagger.

I couldn't get closer to him. I hated myself, knowing that his uncle died while trying to protect me.

I hated myself, knowing that Uncle Dante wouldn't have died if he had never invited me to the party.

I needed no soothsayer to tell me that I was the reason the masked men attacked the party.

"My name is Officer Julian. Sorry for your uncle's death. Can you please come with us to the station for some questioning? Perhaps your information might aid the investigation," one of the policemen said as he walked in. It turned out that he never left with his colleagues.

"I am going to get to the bottom of this. I will make sure those bastards pay for what they did to my uncle," Adrian muttered to himself before he walked outside.

I followed him immediately. I couldn't bear the risk of leaving him alone. This was the moment he needed me the most.

As I stepped outside, I saw Kate running toward my direction with her arms spread wide, waiting to embrace me.

Realizing that Kate was alive and unhurt was the perfect consolation I needed. I had every reason to believe she was dead.

"Thank goodness you're alive. Where's Adrian?" Kate embraced me firmly.

I couldn't speak. I forced out a smile that made it obvious something was wrong with me.

"Where's Adrian? I hope it's not what I'm thinking. Oh, no. Was he shot?" Kate went into panic mode. She kept speculating when I failed to provide the response she needed.

 Just then, Adrian joined us.

His eyes were already reddish. I could barely recognize the love of my life anymore.

"Wait, Adrian is alive. Why are you sad? What the fuck is happening? Can someone please say a word to me?" Kate freaked out. Not even Adrian or I could satisfy her curiosity.

"The cops require us at the station. I told them Uncle Dante was shot dead trying to protect Olivia," Adrian said.

"Holy fuck! Uncle Dante is dead? When? How?" Kate freaked out upon learning about Uncle Dante's death.

I tried to console her before realizing that I needed consolation more than anyone.

How would I sleep with both eyes closed knowing that my supposedly future in-law lost his life trying to protect me? There's no denying that I am going to live with the guilt for the rest of my life.

"Don't worry, investigations are underway. The culprits will be brought to book," Adrian assured Kate.

How he managed to put himself together after his uncle's death is something that should be studied in a university.

As we arrived at the station, we met with the cop who invited us for questioning.

"You came right on time. After undergoing severe torture, the gunman finally confessed," the cop announced.

The confession made our investigation easier. It also saved us the stress of being questioned.

"What did he say? Officer, please don't leave us hanging," Adrian begged when he saw how reluctant the officer was to disclose the full information.

"Stay calm, Mr. Adrian. Can you please come with me to the waiting room? Perhaps you might get the opportunity to ask the criminal some questions," the officer suggested.

It sounded like a perfect plan to me. I would also get the perfect opportunity to pluck the criminal’s eyes out with my sharp nails.

Seconds after we arrived in the waiting room, Adrian pounced on the criminal. He had already thrown a series of punches at the criminal's face before the cops rushed in and pulled him back.

"Perhaps it was a bad idea bringing you out. Is this how you intend to get the truth from him?" The officer reprimanded Adrian for his actions.

I had to step forward to calm Adrian. As much as I wanted him to avenge his late uncle's death, I still didn't think his approach was right. Oftentimes, violence isn't the answer.

After calming Adrian, he forced himself to sit down. I noticed how his heart continued to beat faster.

I could tell that he wasn't done. Some part of him still wanted to inflict severe torture on the criminal.

"Over to you, Daniel. Can you repeat what you told me and the other cops? Remember the agreement we had, so you dare not lie to me," Officer Julian authorized the criminal, whose face had been destroyed.

I could barely see his eyeballs. They were already covered in thick blood.

He spat on the ground and pointed toward me without saying anything. I looked at myself, wondering what was happening.

"Why are you pointing at me? I didn't do anything," I cried my eyes out.
