Divorced But Never Letting Go Chapter 139

OLIVIA

I still can't wrap my head around what happened in the last couple of hours.

It still seems like a dream to me. I never, for once, imagined that I was going to survive the assassination attempt.

I had already accepted my fate—that I was going to be shot dead in the head with reckless abandon. Suddenly, Kate and Adrian showed up when I least expected it.

“Hey, Olivia,” I heard a voice calling my name. I disregarded the voice since I couldn't recognize it.

I drifted back into my thinking mode until I saw a hand wave across my face.

Looking next to me, I discovered that it was Adrian. Apparently, he'd been trying to get my attention, but I seemed not to be bothered.

I wasn't even conscious of my surroundings anymore.

“What's running through your mind this time? Do you want to see the Detective?” Adrian asked me while we stood next to the car.

“Nah! That won't be necessary. I'd rather wait for her to summon me to the interrogation room. Want to take this one step at a time,” I told Adrian.

No doubt, I wanted the drama to be over soon. At the same time, I still wanted the investigation to go smoothly to achieve a desirable result.

“I trust your decision, Olivia. You certainly know best. But please—don't hesitate to disclose what you know about Rene,” Adrian advised me.

Before the advice, that had been my intention. One of my goals was to ensure that Rene spends the rest of her life in jail for the nasty things she has done to me.

Detective Lily finally showed up after waiting for her for almost an eternity. It's as though she read our minds and knew we were discussing her.

The moment Adrian saw Lily, he stood up on his feet. “You've come to invite us to the interrogation room, right?”

 “Not so fast.

There seems to be a new development,” Detective Lily said while facing the ground.

It took a while for her to respond. Immediately, I knew something was definitely wrong.

Adrian and I glared at each other as we shared a telling look.

That was the first time I'd witnessed a Detective in such a mood since she and her team rescued me from the shackles of death.

“Can you please see me in my office right away? I've got a couple of questions for you,” Lily requested of me.

“I am coming with her,” Adrian demanded.

I tried to make him see reasons that I would be fine, but he refused.

In his words: “Don't try to push it, because I am not going to pay attention to you—and you know that.”

That single act from Adrian proved how much he loved me. Too bad I didn't realize it earlier—I was too busy lusting over lost shadows.

 “It's fine.

You both can come with me,” Lily accepted our condition without having to think about it.

While Adrian and I went with her, Kate stayed back.

A few minutes inside her office and I was still on my feet. The anxiety made it difficult for me to cement my buttocks on the chair.

I was only interested in knowing why she invited us to her office.

“Since you've decided to remain standing, I will have no choice but to proceed,” she divulged before taking a deep pause.

From her disposition, I already knew the worst was about to happen.

“To kickstart this meeting, I am sorry to announce that the last surviving assassin passed out during the interrogation session. Too bad we weren't able to make him confess to his crimes before he died,” Detective Lily disclosed after keeping us locked up in suspense.

“That ain't cool if you ask me,” Adrian mumbled while he shook his head in pity.

“Regardless, the investigation must proceed. Olivia here has got sensitive information to disclose which would be beneficial to this investigation,” Adrian spoke on my behalf before I even made an attempt to move my lips.

I looked in his direction and whispered, “What are you doing?”

“What does it seem like? Don't worry, we got this,” he assured me.

He feigned a smile to make the detective believe that everything was fine.

 “Over to you, ma'am.

What do you think we should know? Remember, we are doing this for you. Don't feel hesitant if you've got to do something to aid with the investigation,” the detective narrowed her gaze at me.

I cleared my throat in an attempt to speak, yet I found it difficult to construct a simple sentence. I didn't even know where to start.

I needed to have concrete evidence against Rene before accusing her of being responsible for the kidnap that almost led to my death.

 “I suspect Rene.

Yes, she's the prime suspect,” I spoke without fear.

After the confession, I felt relieved as though a giant tomb was rolled away from my heart.

I also noticed that my breathing had returned to normal again.

“Pardon my ignorance, but who's Rene? That's my first time getting to hear about her,” Lily asked.

That was the moment I lost my vocal cords. I was too ashamed to tell who Rene actually was.

It's definitely going to portray a bad impression about me to her—especially when she thinks that Adrian is my husband.

 “Hello?

I am waiting,” Lily snapped to bring my attention back to the discussion.

 “Rene is her ex-husband’s mistress.

She was the reason for Cyril and Olivia's divorce. She wanted to have the company so badly. She also sees Olivia as competition, even after the divorce,” Adrian revealed as he went against my command. My sluggishness was what he couldn't tolerate.

 “Hold on a second.

Did you just say Rene?” The detective giggled as she rifled through her files.

 “Yes, she's the one.

Do you know her?” I asked her with utmost anticipation.

I also noticed that my voice was gradually returning to its natural state.

“Something ain't right,” the detective muttered in disbelief as she continued to scan through her case files.

“I got this now. The same Rene has ordered for your arrest because she believes you might have laced Cyril's drink with narcotics—which has left him battling for his life in the hospital.”
