OLIVIA

“The cops are here now. It has got to be them. You reached out to them, didn’t you?” Kate freaked out as she heard the siren of a car from a distance.

She had every reason to believe they were driving toward my apartment.

She wasn’t next to me, yet I could hear her heart pounding faster. Fear had taken the best part of her. What was left inside of her was emptiness.

“Calm down, Kate. You don’t have to freak out like a suspect. The cops ain’t getting you arrested. The last time I checked, you murdered no one,” I assured Kate.

It was precisely what she needed at that point.

"I'm scared! What if they start asking questions? I don't want to spend the rest of my life in jail," Kate cried as though she had just committed murder.

To completely allay her fears, I got closer to Kate and held her head. “Listen to me, Kate. You don’t have to say a word. I will do the talking once they show up.”

“I am calm now. I won’t freak out no more,” Kate assured me after making a cross sign.

I placed my hand on her chest to check her heartbeat. I noticed that she was breathing normally again, unlike before when she felt like the ground should swallow her.

Shortly after, the cops walked into my new home. I winked at Kate to stay calm. I had a feeling she was gonna screw up.

“We got a call from this apartment. Where's the man in question?” one of the cops asked us.

“Over there,” I hurriedly pointed at Cyril, who had already regained consciousness.

I did everything I could to answer their questions alone because I didn’t want to put Kate in a difficult situation.

Without hesitation, the cops quickly helped Cyril back on his feet.

“Ouch! My head hurts.” He caressed his head in pain.

The hit on his head had really weakened him. I doubted if he even recognized us all.

“Who are you?” Cyril questioned the cops after they made him sit on the sofa.

“We are from the state police department. We got a call concerning a case of assault,” one of the cops introduced himself and his colleagues.

They also flaunted their identity cards to prove that they weren’t imposters.

They asked me a few questions, and I gave them my version of the story.

“You called the cops on me? How dare you?” Cyril yelled at me.

Apparently, Cyril wasn’t pleased with my explanations. He felt that I had conspired against him.

He was becoming violent toward me, the same way he was when he showed up drunk.

Fortunately for me, the cops came to my rescue, stopping him from launching an attack on me.

“Get your filthy hands off me, you son of a bitch! You’ve got no idea who the fuck I am. The cops are on my payroll. I’m going to ensure you all lose your jobs,” Cyril boasted as he was being bundled away like a common thief.

“We’ll see about that once we arrive at the station,” one of the cops responded.

Shortly after Cyril was taken away, I went to embrace Kate. “He’s gone now. You have nothing to worry about anymore.”

She pulled herself away and looked at me. “Really? You think having Cyril locked up will stop him from coming after you again? We both know Cyril will be out of detention in no time.”

“So what do you suggest I do now?” I asked Kate.

I turned out to be the confused one. I had thought I had everything under control until Kate showed up with a different ideology.

“Get a restraining order against Cyril, or else he’ll keep coming back after the divorce. We both know how obstinate Cyril is. This time, neither I nor the cops will be here to save you. Think about it,” Kate advised me.

She suddenly evolved from being a sheep lost in the wilderness to a ruthless wolf wandering in the woods, seeking whom to devour.

Kate’s suggestion sounded like a perfect one, but I was confused.

The whole situation got me second-guessing my decision-making policy. Nothing ever made sense to me.

Cyril had rejected me a thousand times, even when I had pleaded for his acceptance.

To prove that he never wanted anything to do with me anymore, he moved out of the mansion to live with Rene, his mistress.

Now that I want to leave, he refuses to grant my request. Suddenly, he wants me back. It was something I couldn't comprehend.

“But why is Cyril upset that you want to leave him, though? I doubt his anger has anything to do with the money his family's company would lose once you leave the marriage,” Kate asked me.

The question came after a few minutes of silence. Everything was happening so fast before our very eyes.

 “Exactly my point.

I mean, his grandmother already bragged to my face that they would move on without me. So why the sudden rise in anger now?” I responded to Kate’s question with another question. I was more confused than her.

“So what's your take on my suggestion? Are you putting a restraining order against Cyril?” Kate asked me again to be certain.

As I was about to respond, we heard a knock on the door. A few seconds later, Adrian was already inside my living room.

“I heard what happened. I had to rush down here as soon as I could. Did he hurt you?” Adrian rushed to embrace me. He also did a quick check on my body to confirm if I had any bruises.

Kate and I glared at each other, wondering what was happening.

 “How did you—”

 I halted.

I was too shocked to speak.

I couldn't explain how he had found out about Cyril’s arrest.

The last time I checked, I never told him about it, and neither did Rene.

If she hadn’t been next to me all along, I would have believed she secretly texted Adrian.
