Divorced But Never Letting Go Chapter 140

OLIVIA

“What did you just say? Rene did what?” I lost my cool and jumped from my seat.

It took the joint efforts of Adrian and the detective to calm me down.

“Don't tell me to calm down! Didn't you hear what she said?” I blasted Adrian.

I expected him to take my side—or at the very least, caution Lily about the false accusations thrown at me.

“Ranting won't solve anything. We need to take this case lightly,” Adrian said to me.

His words somehow calmed my nerves. But deep down, I was burning with curiosity. Why would Rene point fingers at me when I hadn’t even been in New York at the time of the incident?

“Over to you, Detective. Why would Rene file a report against Olivia? Olivia hasn’t been to New York in recent times,” Adrian questioned Lily.

For the first time in a long while, I was genuinely proud of him. That was the move I had hoped for.

“Just a moment, please,” Lily said, shuffling through the files on her desk.

“Oh, yes. I found this one.” She handed the file over to us and asked us to go through it.

I was reluctant at first, but with Adrian next to me, I was compelled to read it.

Moving slowly, I picked up the file and began reading the statement Rene had made against me.

“Cyril visited Olivia at her hotel room shortly before she left for Paris. When I confronted Cyril about it, he confessed that he intended to plead for a comeback. That wasn't all; Olivia offered him a drink, and they had sex. Since then, Cyril started acting weird. A medical report revealed that his kidney was ruptured due to the intake of narcotics.”

I wasn't even halfway through when Adrian snatched the file from me and nearly tore it to shreds.

Sadly for him, the detective was right there to stop him.

“You wouldn’t dare do that. Perhaps you want your spouse to spend the rest of her life in jail without a fair hearing,” she warned.

“Then do something about this! Olivia and Cyril are divorced. She can't possibly have sex with him,” Adrian screamed at the top of his lungs, defending me while I stood there, helpless.

His voice echoed so loudly that some policemen rushed into the office, almost ready to bundle him out like a criminal.

Thankfully, Lily calmed the situation with a few sharp words in French.

I couldn’t understand the language, but based on what I saw, she must have asked them to leave.

“You’re lucky this time. The second time might be different. So you might want to bring down your voice. Do you understand?” Lily warned Adrian firmly.

Then she turned back to me. “Now, over to you. I’ll be asking you a couple of questions. If you want to be free from this case, you have to be honest with me.”

When she saw how uncomfortable Adrian looked, she snapped at him next.

“I see what you're trying to do. I will need you to stay quiet until I'm done with Olivia. You're only permitted to speak when I say so.”

“Don’t worry. I got this. You ain’t got nothing to be worried about,” I assured Adrian with a warm embrace.

This was the moment I had to carry my burden and stop leaning on Adrian for everything.

What would happen when he wasn’t by my side and I had to face a time-sensitive situation alone?

“I’m ready for your questions, detective. You ain’t got nothing to be worried about,” I told her with full confidence.

“Good! Now, here’s my first question: Did you, by any chance, meet with Cyril before you left for Paris?” she asked.

I went into silent mode for a few seconds. Despite how simple the question seemed, it felt like the hardest one ever.

I knew what I wanted to say, but I was scared it might land me in more trouble. Maybe even implicate me further.

I glanced briefly at Adrian, but I was careful not to get him involved—not after the warning he received from the bloody detective.

“I did meet with Cyril,” I stuttered.

“But it was just once. And it was outside the hotel,” I quickly added, trying to erase any suspicion from the detective’s mind.

I saw the disappointment on Adrian’s face. He must have been hurt that I never told him about my meeting with Cyril.

“Now we’re getting somewhere,” Detective Lily said, adjusting her chair to face mine directly.

She brought out a tape recorder and placed it on her desk.

I didn’t bother asking what the recording was for—I already knew.

“Would you mind disclosing why you agreed to meet with Cyril after claiming to have moved on? According to our records, you asked the court to place a restraining order on him the day your marriage was dissolved,” she interrogated me like a seasoned criminal.

“And lastly, why didn’t you notify Adrian about this meeting if you truly had good intentions? I mean, from his expression, it seems he wasn’t even aware.”

I didn’t know where to start. The questions hit me like a storm.

I cleared my throat and avoided making any eye contact with Adrian. I didn’t want to drown in self-guilt.

“For starters, I had no idea that Cyril would want to talk to me,” I said to set the record straight.

“Secondly, Rene was right when she said Cyril wanted a comeback. But guess what? I turned down his offer—because my heart beats for someone else.” I glanced at Adrian, hoping to make him feel special.

“As for the last question—Cyril and I never had sex. We barely even moved from where we stood. The entire conversation lasted less than five minutes before Kate, my assistant, showed up and dismissed him,” I explained.

“And why didn’t you notify Adrian about it? Don’t you think he had a right to know?”

“That’s because I didn’t think it was important. Besides, Adrian never liked it when Cyril’s name was mentioned. Have I answered your questions now?” I snapped back at the detective.

She sighed, stared at us for a moment, then stood up, pacing like she was searching for something.

Moments later, she returned to her seat and said, “I’m afraid you both might need to return to New York and sort this out. Not just Rene—the Penhurst Family is in this case, too.”

I tried to convince her that I had no intention of stepping foot in New York again, but she didn’t listen. According to her, the case was too big for her to handle.
