Divorced But Never Letting Go Chapter 136
ADRIAN
Until we arrived at the station, Kate and I never said a word to each other. Knowing what was at stake, we understood that this was certainly not the time to get familiar with each other. All that mattered was ensuring that Olivia was rescued from the imposters who called themselves policemen.
“We are here now,” I said as we pulled into the parking lot. I was about to step out of the vehicle when Kate pulled me back. A thought seemed to have crossed her mind.
“What's the matter? Do you realize we are on a rescue mission right now?” I frowned at Kate for holding us back. I also reminded her how she had blamed me for Olivia's kidnapping, thinking I could have done something to stop it.
“Of course, I know what's at stake. We're about to report the case to the cops to help us find Olivia, aren't we?” Kate acknowledged. “Nonetheless, we should also remember that we are in Paris, a French-speaking country. Most of them might find it difficult to understand English,” she added.
I paid rapid attention to her and realized she wasn’t far from the truth. It was a shame that I hadn’t even considered that for a moment. I was completely perplexed by the whole drama, and it had affected my sense of reasoning.
“I might have to agree with you on this one. So what do you suggest we do now?” I conceded, allowing Kate to take control of the situation. She was in the best position to find a solution, considering how she had come through for us in recent times.
“I understand a bit of the French language. I believe that would be somewhat helpful. What do you think?” Kate proposed.
“Perfect! That's precisely what I'm talking about,” I endorsed her suggestion without hesitation. It was certainly the only option we had, especially since I had nothing to offer in this situation.
As we walked toward the main entrance of the station, I stepped aside slightly, allowing Kate to take the lead since she understood French far better than I did. Immediately upon entering, I noticed a female cop staring at me suspiciously. I tried to ignore her, but she made it so obvious that I couldn’t help but wave at her, forcing a fake smile to create a good impression.
To my surprise, she walked up to me. I was confused because I couldn't recall seeking her attention. It was even more shocking when she greeted me in English. “Good morning, sir, and ma'am. How can we assist you?”
“Wait a minute! Do you understand English? How did you know we aren’t French?” I asked in utmost confusion.
“Of course, I understand English. And to answer your second question, it's not difficult to spot Americans,” she replied with a smile. I hadn’t even explained our case yet, and she had already assured me that it would be resolved.
Upon discovering that she understood English, I was amazed. I couldn’t keep it to myself. Without hesitation, I dragged Kate in my direction. She was struggling to convey her thoughts in French, thinking it would be a walk in the park for her.
“This lady here understands English better than I expected. She could be of help to us,” I explained to Kate just as she was about to speak.
She let out a deep sigh. “What a relief. Those cops over there really stressed me out. You came at the right time. You should have seen how I was stuttering like a kid caught stealing.”
“Well, you don’t have to force yourself to speak a language you don’t understand. This officer right here will make our job easier,” I reassured Kate in the presence of the officer, helping to ease her worries.
After narrating Olivia's kidnapping, the female cop asked us to stay behind while she informed her team.
“I told you I got this! You shouldn’t have doubted me. Now, who’s the man?” I bragged, beating my chest like King Kong.
“Don’t flatter yourself,” Kate shrugged.
“Besides, how did you convince her to assist us?” Kate asked, her curiosity evident. She also apologized for how she had treated me upon discovering Olivia was kidnapped. “I am sorry for judging you. I treated you badly over a silly mistake while disregarding all the times you’ve come through for us.”
I embraced Kate and whispered in her ear, “It's okay.”
I quickly pulled away when I realized it was taking too long. That was the first time I had ever hugged Kate. It took me a moment to remember that it wasn’t Olivia standing in front of me.
After what felt like an eternity, the female cop finally returned. “I apologize for taking so long. My team is ready,” she said.
This time, she wasn’t alone. She was accompanied by several hefty-looking male cops. I simply waved at them as a greeting, knowing they likely wouldn’t understand English. After brief introductions, we all stepped outside, with the officers driving behind us.
It took nearly an hour to track the location Olivia had forwarded to Kate. I was getting tired of driving without any positive results. Not just me—Kate was also growing weary of the struggle and felt like giving up. The only thing keeping her going was Olivia. Olivia meant a lot to Kate, and she wasn’t about to turn her back on her at such a crucial time.
“Hold on a second! I just heard Olivia's voice,” Kate suddenly said, forcing me to a halt.
“Are you sure about that? This isn’t the time for jokes, and you should know that,” I warned her. I wasn’t in the mood for games. It felt strange that she was the only one who heard Olivia's voice.
