Divorced But Never Letting Go Chapter 80
OLIVIA
After I got off the phone with Cyril, I lost what little happiness I had left. He always had a way of ruining my day at the slightest opportunity. It was as though he was being paid to do it.
Telling him I was at the office was the biggest mistake I had ever made. I wished I had never answered the phone or uttered a word to him.
“Do you really need to be here? I mean, you should be home by now. You’ve done a lot for me today. Besides, Cyril will be coming soon. I don’t want him to meet you here,” I told Adrian. Ever since I was nearly killed, he hadn’t left my side.
He kept protecting me as though he were a special bodyguard assigned by the president of the United States.
“Do you really expect me to leave just like that and let Cyril devour you? Come on, I can’t do something like that. I need to be sure that you’re safe before leaving. I won’t forgive myself if anything bad happens to you. I don’t mean to sound rude or anything, but I don’t trust you alone with Cyril. Yes, he might be your husband, but I still have my worries—especially now that he’s become a major suspect,” Adrian explained further.
I could see the sense in what he was saying. He held my hands and caressed them in a gentle, affectionate gesture.
I felt special, like a newborn child. If it were up to me, I would have preferred for Adrian to stay and go home with me. I didn’t want him to step an inch away from me.
He had been nothing but supportive. I couldn’t imagine what would have happened if he hadn’t been with me when I was attacked. His presence made me feel safe—like no one could ever touch me.
“I love the things you got us at the mall. Kate loved them too. Thank you so much. You made our day special. I won’t forget it in a hurry,” I expressed my heartfelt gratitude to Adrian.
Although the shopping didn’t go as planned, I still needed to appreciate him. He had tried to make the experience worthwhile. Too bad the assassins had other plans.
“And I apologize for being rude to you earlier. Trust me, it wasn’t my intention. I was just overwhelmed by my pathetic situation and had to unleash my anger on you,” I admitted, trying to make things right. Knowing that the cops were handling my case gave me some relief.
“It’s fine! You don’t have to say a word. I did what I had to do. I couldn’t leave you to suffer. Besides, I’m not upset with you. It’s completely understandable—you almost got killed. I’d probably do worse if I were in your shoes,” Adrian said with a laugh.
What a perfect gentleman. Every day, he gave me more reasons to divorce Cyril and spend the rest of my life with him.
It baffled me how a man like him didn’t have a woman in his life, let alone a wife. Were the girls too blind to notice him? Or was he simply not their type?
A comfortable silence settled between us as Adrian and I shared a long, telling look.
We both smiled and held each other’s hands, enjoying the moment. Even without words, Adrian still gladdened my heart.
I had fallen for him so deeply that everything about him was beginning to make perfect sense. I no longer expected anything supernatural from him—I just loved him for who he was.
Our moment, however, was ruined by the arrival of Kate, my assistant, who walked in without knocking.
“Oops! Sorry for intruding. I had no idea you were here. I thought you had left. I’ll come back later and let you both have your privacy,” Kate suggested.
“No. There’s no need for that. I was about to leave before you showed up,” Adrian stood up.
I was stunned. When had we discussed that he was leaving? I thought he wanted to spend the rest of the day with me. I guess I was wrong.
“Are you leaving because of Kate? You can’t do that. I’m sure whatever Kate wants to do can wait,” I protested. I was already feeling Adrian’s absence, even though he was still right in front of me.
“Don’t worry, just let her be. I’m hosting a party tomorrow at my place, and I want you to come,” Adrian said smoothly, inviting me.
“What did you just say?” I stuttered, caught off guard by the sudden invitation.
“You’re going to be there, aren’t you?” he asked again.
I scratched my head, searching for a response. It did sound like a fantastic idea—a perfect opportunity to cool off after everything I’d been through in the past few hours.
If it were up to me, I would have loved to go, but at the same time, I wanted to take things slow and steady with Adrian. I didn’t want to seem too desperate or make him feel like he was just a rebound.
“I’ll be busy at the office. I have a couple of clients to attend to. Kate knows about that,” I lied, winking at Kate to stick to the plan. Unfortunately, she wasn’t even looking in my direction.
“Is that true, Kate?” Adrian turned to her for confirmation.
Kate looked at me, making it so obvious that I had to look up at the ceiling, pretending not to notice. I didn’t want it to seem like I was telling her what to say.
“She’ll be less busy. I don’t think we have any important appointments tomorrow. Besides, it’s the weekend. Don’t worry, I’ll make sure she makes it,” Kate said confidently, completely ignoring our plan.
“Sounds promising. Tomorrow it is. See you there. I’ll be waiting,” Adrian said, pecking me on the chin before walking away, leaving me alone with Kate.
“Aww! That was so sweet. Damn! You’re so lucky. I’ve never met anyone like him before,” Kate grinned at me.
I stared at her for minutes without saying a word. I was utterly dumbfounded by her betrayal.
Just as I was about to respond, my phone beeped. A message from Adrian.
“Speaking of the devil,” I smirked.
The moment I read the text, my mood shifted from bad to worse. A sudden chill ran through me.
“Oh no. Not again,” I muttered, my voice trembling.
“What’s the matter, ma’am?” Kate asked, concern written all over her face.
This time, she wasn’t joking. She was serious.
