I see his neck and ears turn red, but he doesn’t give me a reply.

“Derrick!” I prompt him, running completely out of patience.

I hear him sigh, and then he drops the bomb, “After females are marked, they go into heat periodically until they get pregnant.”

“Ok, and what does «going into heat» entail?” I ask, a little worried now.

“Well, it means that you will want to mate,” he says hurriedly, like he wants his words to be out of his mouth as soon as possible.

He runs a hand down his face in frustration.

“Haven’t your mom or mate explained anything of it to you?” he asked me in disbelief.

In truth, Derek mentioned it once, but he didn’t explain it to me, he just brushed it off, and my mom, well, she kept the whole werewolf thing a secret, once the cat was out of the bag, we didn’t have the chance to spend much time together, she didn’t have the time to teach me these things.

A tear escapes me, I wish mom and Derek were here, they would know what to do, but they aren’t, I am alone in this, and I feel scared as hell.

“Hey, don’t cry, I didn’t mean to offend you, I was just wondering. Don’t worry, your mate will be here soon, and he will help you make it go away,” Derrick says soothingly.

“And what if he doesn’t come?” I ask, feeling completely helpless.

Derrick doesn’t reply for a while, his silence ominous in the car, making me feel even more scared.

“He’ll come.”

That’s all he says, before he goes silent again.

He keeps driving for another while, my belly aching at times, and the itch returning full force once the pain has subsided. I feel uncomfortably hot, like I am running a high fever, and even the air conditioning that Derrick has kindly turned on, does little to alleviate my discomfort.

“You can try touching yourself, it helps,” he says out of the blue.

I stare at him with wide eyes; is he suggesting what I think he is suggesting?

“I know, I am sounding like a pervert, but it’s the truth, sexual release will help with the heat and with the pain.”

His neck and ears are red again, and I understand that explaining these things is uncomfortable for him too.

I take his words into consideration, but I honestly can’t bring myself to masturbate in front of him, it just feels wrong on every level. So, I grit my teeth and endure the discomfort for the rest of the ride.

When we reach the hotel, Derrick all but runs out of the car like he’s possessed, shifts into his wolf and runs into the woods, to run off some the steam I bet. I feel guilty for what I’ve put him through, I hope his mate won’t see it as some kind of betrayal.

Suddenly the car door opens, and someone throws a white blanket in. Grateful, I wrapped it around myself and exited the car, to find Lukas standing there alone, waiting for me.

He is breathing through his mouth, and he doesn’t say anything, he just gestures for me to follow him.

The lobby of the Hotel is spectacular, all-in rose marble and with a beautiful crystal chandelier hanging in the middle; it must be a five star, although I am puzzled to see that the lobby is deserted.

“Is this hotel closed? It is deserted,” I ask Lukas.

“I booked all the rooms for a couple of days, and asked the staff to retreat,” Lukas answers in a nasal voice, as he’s still breathing through his mouth.

He booked the whole hotel?! Was it really necessary? He must have spent a fortune! I feel immediately guilty for dragging him into my troubles again, he’s risked his life for me on multiple occasions, while I have done nothing for him.

“You don’t like it?” Lukas asks worriedly.

I shake my head. “I love it, I just feel guilty for making you spend all this money, and for always dragging you into my problems. It’s not your duty to help me, and I don’t even know where I can start to repay you for all that you have done for me.”

A tender smile graces his lips, making him look incredibly handsome, and even a little younger.

“You don’t have to repay me for anything, everything I’ve done I’ve done willingly. We are friends; thus, it is my duty to protect you, we Alphas like to protect the weaklings.”

“Hey! I am not weakling!” I protest.

“Says the girl who let herself get trapped in a cage until two minutes ago…”

I want to retort something, but suddenly the pain in my belly returns with a vengeance, much stronger than before in the car. I double over, unable to keep walking, and Lukas immediately picks me up in his arms, and carries me to the third floor, he takes me into a huge room, I believe it’s a suite, and deposits me gingerly on the bed.

“I asked a few female warriors from my pack to come help you, but it will take them at least ten hours by car to get here, and there are no planes flying to the nearest airport today. I have explained the situation to Damon, he has asked Alice and one of your friends to come, but it will take them nearly the same amount of time. The weather is too bad to fly the helicopter. You really chose the right timing to go into heat,” he comments sternly.

Like I wanted this to happen.

“I am going to run you a cold bath, it will make you feel a little better.”

I am in so much pain that I can’t even manage to reply, everything around me feeling unimportant, the pain and this fire inside me are the only things that hold my attention.

Lukas comes back and unwraps me from the blanket, he carries me to the bathtub and places me still in my lingerie into the ice-cold water. The water feels great on my scorching hot skin, and I can’t help a moan of relief from leaving my lips.

Lukas’ eyes blaze blue, and I know that he is not immune to my heat, I have to try to keep these sounds to myself.

Eventually the water becomes warm, so I decide to get out, my fingertips already all wrinkled for being immersed in water for an extended amount of time.

Lukas has left, I don’t know where he went to, so I took my lingerie off, it’s all wet from the bath, and it’s sticking uncomfortably to my skin.

I wrap a towel around me, and go back to the bedroom, starting to feel incredibly hot again. The need to be touched and pleasured is starting to drive me insane, I need Derek, I need him now. And if he doesn’t come, what will I do? Will I search pleasure with another man? At this point, anyone with a dick is starting to sound appealing.
