Mine to Protect Chapter 46: KIDNAPPED
*Derek*
I don’t need to think twice, I turn the car around and go back the way I came from, speeding up as fast as I can. I tried calling her, but she doesn’t pick up. I try Elizabeth, then Josh, but no one picks up. The bad feeling in the pit of my stomach keeps growing, making it hard to stay calm, my wolf straining to come out and run all the way to their house.
When I reach the street, they live in, I see three black SUVs with tainted windows parked outside Hazel’s home, and my heart drops in my stomach when I see men wearing black military clothes placing an unconscious Hazel and Elizabeth in the cars. I speed up in their direction, wanting to block their way, but they are too fast, the three cars drive off at high speed, leaving a cloud of dust behind.
Who are these men? What do they want from Hazel? Considering that they have taken only Hazel and Elizabeth, I guess they want something to do with white wolves. How do they know they are white wolves? Where did they get this information?
A thousand of questions swarm my mind, but I have to put them aside, because two men are now leaning out of one of the SUVs I am following, and they start raining bullets at me. My front tires burst, and the car swerved out of control, turning upside down, and coming to a stop at the side of the road.
I feel the pain of a few broken bones, but now it’s not the time to be whiny, I’ll heal fast enough, I need to follow them, I can’t let them take Hazel. I slid out of the car, from the broken window, as fast as I could, turn into my wolf, and start running at top speed down the road, sniffing the air to make sure I am going in the right direction. Hazel’s scent is faint, but thankfully being mates, I can still perceive it, and with the mate bond, I can have a vague idea of the direction they are taking her.
How could I let them take her right under my nose? I will never forgive myself if something happens to her. Anger and anxiety are driving me insane, but I can’t lose it now, I must keep focused.
I keep running as fast as I can, but Hazel’s scent is becoming fainter by the minute, if I don’t hurry, I will lose their trail. My wolf suddenly stirs right from the main road, following a dirt track which leads into a thick forest, he has picked up on Hazel’s location through the bond, she is not far.
I leave the dirt track, running through the thick woods in an attempt to conceal myself from guards who are possibly watching the perimeter for intruders. I come to a stop when I see a clearing ahead, the place is enclosed by a high metal wire fence, inside I can see a small concrete building, big enough to store at least three cars, it literally looks like a garage, with no windows and an up-and-over metal door. Two of the black SUVs I have seen outside Hazel’s home are parked outside this building.
She must be in there. My wolf wants to rip the fence open and barge into that building to save her, but I need to be smarter about it, I need to check my surroundings first, find the best way to enter and leave, and gauge their numbers. It will be no use if I end up dead because of my recklessness.
I check the fence again and notice the body of a small bird not far from it, the body is completely burnt black, hence the wire mesh must be running with high voltage electricity. There are cameras on the fence and all over the perimeter. I wonder what this place is, deep down praying that it’s not the same place Hazel saw in her vision. No, it can’t be. The Moon Goddess won’t do this to us. But I can’t get this feeling of unease and foreboding out of my system.
I need to gather my warriors, I can’t break in alone, without knowing what’s inside, it would be a suicide mission. I left my mobile in the car though; I need to find a way to call Damon and let him know what happened. His call from yesterday comes back into my mind, I completely forgot about the break-in! Dammit! As I hadn’t enough on my plate already. But Hazel is a priority, that rats will get what they deserve in due time.
I run back as fast as my legs can take me to my car, finding a tow truck ready to tow my car away, and a police man taking notes down on a notebook. I shift back into my human form, getting a gasp from the police man.
“Sir, would you be so kind to lend me your mobile? I need to make an urgent call.” I try to sound calm, although I am far from it. I avoid saying that the car he’s towing away is mine, to avoid questioning and all the troubles that will come with it. I don’t have time to waste.
“Sure but be quick. And find something to wear.” He replies haughtily.
If I weren’t in a hurry, I would have kicked his butt until it turns coal black.
I dial Damon’s number, luckily, I know it by heart, he picks up at the first ring.
“Damon speaking.”
“It’s me. I need your help.”
“Derek, thank the Goddess, where have you been?”
“Damon, listen carefully, someone has taken Hazel and her mom, I have followed them and found their location, but the building is guarded, I need backup to break inside.”
“Fuck! I knew something on this line happened. When you didn’t come back to the pack-grounds, I tried calling you, but you wouldn’t pick up, so I drove to Hazel’s house. It was a mess, the kitchen completely destroyed and filled with strange smoke which smelled like wolfsbane. Derek, Josh is dead, I found him sprawled on the doorway, with a silver bullet in his heart. The bastards that have taken her are not messing around, we need to prepare carefully before we act.”
Hazel’s dad is dead, this will break her, she loved her dad so dearly. My heart squeezes for her, and red-hot rage starts pulsing within me. They will pay for what they have done, I’ll make sure of it.
“Drive on highway 360, go north, I will meet you halfway,” I tell Damon and hang up. I give the mobile back to its owner, then shift back into my wolf and start running south.
**Hazel – before being abducted.**
Derek has left, and I am worried about him, I know he is a strong Alpha, but he can get hurt too, I don’t want him to get hurt.
Mom comes seat near me on the couch, admiring the mark on my shoulder.
“Honey, it’s beautiful,” she says with sincerity, “I gather that Derek’s wolf is black?”
I nod. “Yes, black like the night.”
“Black and white, a classic,” she continues, giggling. “Interesting the background with the moon shining upon him,” she adds pensively. “Have your powers start manifesting yet?”
“A little, I have broken a few light bulbs, nothing epic. Derek thinks I can control the electricity, but I am honestly not sure. Why hasn’t my wolf woken yet, mom?” I ask her, unable to hide the hurt in my voice.
“I don’t know sweety, the magic should have worn off after the marking. Maybe your wolf needs sometimes to wake up. Don’t rush it, I am sure she will wake soon enough. Regarding your powers, I don’t think it’s electricity, I am guessing they have something to do with the light. Bulbs make light, moonlight is shining upon Derek on your mark.”
The words of that seer in my dream come back to me “Dark times await. The wolf is the key. Let the dark come to light.” I could be the light he was talking about.
