Mine to Protect Chapter 147: BURY THE HATCHET
*Hazel*
I pat her back awkwardly; I am not good at comforting other people.
“Don’t worry, Rose, the battle will be over soon, we are already at a huge advantage.”
She shakes her head between sobs.
“It’s not that, I am so sorry Luna, I gave Derek’s mobile to Luna Melissa, she took your photos from there, I didn’t know she was going to do something so heinous.”
Oh, that!
“Don’t worry, Rose, I know that you only had good intentions, it’s ok. She shouldn’t have tricked you like that. The responsibility is with her, not you. Well, was.”
Suddenly, Rose spins her head towards me, her eyes wide in horror.
“Was?”
“I am sorry,” is the only thing I manage to say before Rose starts crying fully, with lacerating wailings and sobs, as I keep patting and massaging her back trying to comfort her. Against my best efforts, she keeps crying non-stop, and I am starting to feel that the battlefield is not that bad after all.
I just need to sneak out, make sure that Derek doesn’t notice me, and I suppose the fight will nearly be over anyway.
“I am sorry, Rose, I have been called outside, I need to hurry,” I lie shamelessly.
“Something happened?” she asks, startled out of her crying for a second.
“Errmm, no, they just need a hand, don’t worry.”
She looks convinced enough, because she resumes her crying, while I deftly make my way to the entrance door, trying not to attract attention. It sucks that I don’t have Derek’s shield on, but I will have to do with mine.
As soon as I opened the door, a claw shots out to strike me, but I avoid it swiftly, quickly blasting the clawed mutant, until I notice that there are many more just outside the house.
Holy darn, how did they find me here?!
Luckily, Derek is not far away, and my shield immediately becomes bluish, so I can move more easily, not afraid of getting clawed to death.
“Why are you out again?” Derek angry voice comes through the link.
“Believe me, the situation there was unbearable, better the battlefield.”
“What happened?”
“Rose was crying,” I leave out the part regarding who she was crying for, not wanting to upset Derek. He might seem ok at the moment, but as soon as the fighting is over, and he’ll have time to ponder over things, the reality of his loss will hit him like a train wreck.
“And so you left her there to cry by herself…what a good Luna…”
“Hey! I told you from that start that I wouldn’t be a good Luna, but you wouldn’t listen! Then I proposed to swap roles, and you didn’t agree. The offer still stands, if you wish to get in there, I can help out here.”
“Yeah, I appreciate the offer, but no thanks.”
Suddenly, we hear the sound of a big number of paws stomping our way, and when I look up, I see a huge pack of wolves running in our direction and killing our enemies in the process.
“Who are those?” I ask Derek through the link.
“Jackson with his pack, the warriors serving the Court of Alphas and if I am not mistaken, Rocky Valley Pack’s warriors too.”
“I was wondering where that evil turncoat had fled to.”
“Yeah, when you left through the tunnel, your command lifted, and he took the chance to run away with his warriors.”
“He seems to be helping now, though. Maybe he’s changed his mind, after they tried to kill him.”
“I don’t know, we can’t trust that little weasel.”
This time I agree with Derek, Jackson can’t be trusted; even if he’s picked up our side this time, I am sure he would swap sides at any time, depending on which side benefits him better.
Soon, with the help of Jackson’s men, the battle is over, our enemies completely annihilated.
I feel bad for all the lives we have lost today, both between our ranks and our enemy’s, but at the same time, I feel a sense of great relief, that this never-ending fight is finally over, and a sense of accomplishment, at fighting side by side with great warriors for the survival and protection of our race.
Everyone is still vigilant, half expecting new attackers coming out of thin air, adrenaline still running high in our systems.
I look around, trying to spot the people I know, and see Cindy running towards me, still in her wolf form, Lukas right behind her.
She jumps on me and starts attacking my face with her tongue, while a try to push her away.
“Bad wolf! Bad wolf!” I admonish her, but she just laughs at me through the link. Typical naughty Cindy!
Finally, she gets off me and lets me up, and I hug her furry neck tightly, even if she’s all dirty and bloody, I guess we all need a through shower.
From the corner of my eye, I see Derek and Lukas standing silently and naked in front of each other, they both have frowns on their faces, and I am trying to understand if they are mind linking, or if they just playing stare-off.
At one point, Derek moves forward and gives Lukas a brotherly hug, which Lukas reciprocates, and I am so happy to see them like that, to see them close again, that tears fall from my eyes, making Cindy’s fur all wet.
“Are you giving me a salty shower, Luna?” Cyndy jokes through the link.
“That was not my intention, Luna. I am just happy they have made peace with each other, that we have won, that we finally can all move on without fear.”
“I am too.”
And even if she is in wolf form, I can feel her smiling with her words.
Derek, clears his throat beside me, “No hug for me?”
I smirk and jump up into his arms, he catches me easily and holds me tightly, burying his face in the crook of my neck, and inhaling deeply.
“Are you alright, kitten?” he asks, his lips touching my shoulder.
“I’ll be soon, I promise.”
My shoulder hasn’t completely healed yet, but at least it is not bleeding anymore, and I am not feeling as weak as before.
“Alice?” I asked him.
“Damon has knocked her out and Ryder has taken her to the cells.”
“The cells?”
“I know, I didn’t want to put her there either, but she is not herself, and she is dangerous, until we can reverse what they have done, she needs to stay there,” Derek says looking pointedly at me, implying that I must not try to let her out of there.
I will not try to make her escape, but I will try with everything I have to bring her back.
“Alphas, Lunas,” Alpha Jackson greets us approaching us. He is now dressed in a pair of sweatpants and a military jacket and looking very proud of himself.
“Alpha Jackson, I was wondering where you’ve disappeared to,” Derek says as greeting.
“After you and your Luna kindly saved me from those savages, I thought it was my duty to return the favor, so I assembled my troops, and here we are. You have to admit that my help was tactical.”
“We were already winning before you arrived, but thanks anyway,” Derek replies, not even trying to sound diplomatic, and gaining a glare from Jackson.
“I think this will be a good opportunity to bury the hatchet, and start anew? What do you say, Alpha O’Brien? I might even offer you a spot in the High court.”
“I will let my Luna decide, after all, it’s her you tried to scorn and kidnap, not me.”
I look surprised at Derek, since when does he listen to me? This is a new one! He just shrugs with a small smile, as if saying, do what you want.
