Mine to Protect Chapter 93: LAST WORDS
*Derek*
We are still on the fourth floor, fighting with everything we have got, these guards just keep coming in like an endless stream, one dead one new pops out. Not having Hazel’s shield to protect us is also slowing us down, because we need to dodge the darts and bullets while fighting hand to hand; but we are holding our ground, we are not one of the strongest packs in the country for no reason.
Abruptly, I feel a mind-link open, and hear Hazel’s voice in my mind,
“Derek, help!”
“Kitten, what’s wrong? Where are you?” I try to mind-link her back, but she is not answering, and I can’t feel anything coming through the bond, she must be unconscious.
I try Alice, but still get no answer. Same with the other warriors on their team.
Terror like no other sinks his ugly claws in me, something bad must have happened, I need to go to them, now.
I link my second in command telling him that I am going down to B6, and to join me with the others when they are done here.
I run as fast as I can, shuffling within new incoming warriors, eluding attacks and giving a few strikes with my claws on my way to and down the stairs. No one can stop me, I need to get to Hazel, I need to save her before it is too late.
I get to the 6th floor, and I find the warriors unconscious on the corridor floor, the stench of wolfsbane still lingering in the air. I run down the corridor and find an open door on the right, it’s half broken down, a piece missing and lying on the floor not far away. The room is dark and empty, the stench of wolfsbane stronger in here, mixed with the taste of burnt flesh and the sweet scent of my mate.
They have hurt her, again.
I can’t control my rage anymore, and I howl, a loud and powerful wail of fury and agony, before I start running down the corridor, my mind focused on our bond, leading me to where they are taking her, because they can gas us and beat us unconscious, but they can never divide us, mates will always be able to find one another.
I run to the end of the corridor, and that’s where I see them, ten guards, two of them carrying Hazel and Alice slumped on their shoulders. They are completely unconscious and covered in burns and cuts, darts sticking out of them.
I speed up, my paws thumping loudly on the tiled floor, I don’t care if they can hear me, I am not planning on surprising them, I am planning on killing them one by one in the most agonizing ways possible.
Six of them stop and turn around, firing their guns at me, I just hope they are not using those lethal bullets they used on me last time, although I hope maybe I’ve grown some resistance to that concoction.
I manage to avoid some bullets, while others hit me without doing much damage, or maybe I am just so riled up that I don’t feel it.
I jump on one guard, tearing his throat out, blood splattering everywhere, then bump directly onto the next one, biting his head right off. To some it might sound gruesome, but I relish in seeing their blood flow on those white tiles, I want to paint them all red, want to hear them scream in fear and pain, beg me to spare them, as if I would, they will pay with their lives, every and each one of them.
When I am done with them, I try to get through the door at the end of the corridor which separates me from the fleeing lot, but the door is locked. I don’t care, a door will not keep me away from my mate. I run back a few steps to get some momentum, then run at it with all the force I have and crash into it. I can hear the door creek, but it still stands, locked. I bump into it again and again, and when it finally gives way, and I get to the hall where the elevators are, I notice that they have just climbed on an elevator, whose doors are slowly closing shut.
I run towards it, managing to stick my front paw between the closing doors.
Hell, yeah! Now you are going to find out what happens when you mess with an Alpha!
The elevator’s doors slowly slide open again, and I jump in, as soon as the opening is wide enough for me. The guards are ready with their guns and manage to get some bullets in, but I don’t even feel them; I rip those low-lives open one by one, turning the elevator into a red pool.
By the time I am done, the elevator doors have already closed shut, and the elevator is going down.
I shift back to human form and check Hazel and Alice for serious injuries, but I find none. Their wrists are both trapped in silver cuffs, which are preventing them from healing and recovering their strength.
I tried to break Hazel’s cuffs, burning my hands badly in the process, I only manage to break the chain connecting her wrists, but not to take the hooks off.
The elevator comes to a stop on B10; I am ready to press the close button to shut the doors and then press the button to the ground floor, when someone places a metal bar between the closing doors, preventing them from shutting.
The next thing I know, the doors are ripped open, and I am splashed with cold water, followed by the agonizing pain of electricity running through my body. I turn around and see Hazel and Alice convulsing on the ground hit by the electrical current.
No, I can’t let them hurt them anymore.
I push the pain out of my mind and focus on picking up both females from the ground, I place each of them on each shoulder, and start walking out of the elevator, where a group of armed guards are waiting, their weapons aimed at me.
As soon as we are out of the elevator, the current stops, and I can breathe a little.
“Put them down! Hands in the air!” a guard orders.
I just look at him menacingly, not moving an inch.
Pang, one of the guards shot me in the abdomen, and I feel hot blood trickle down my belly and legs, he must have got me good; I don’t even know how many bullets I have taken already, but I feel my body becoming weaker by the second.
“10th floor, save your Luna,” I order through the link to all my warriors. I might not be able to make it, but I am not letting them take Hazel, not this time.
“Don’t shoot him, you could kill the White Wolf!” a female voice booms through the hall, although the voice sounds strange, like it is camouflaged.
“He could be useful too, as a paw to make her comply. Take him, but don’t kill him, same for the other woman.”
I can’t let them take Hazel, no matter what. I decide to put the two women down on the floor behind me, I can’t fight properly with them on my shoulders, and then turn again into my wolf. I jump on one of the guards, mauling him on his shoulder, but they have been expecting that, because they attack me from behind, managing to secure a silver choke chain on my neck. They pull me by the chain off the guard, and I try to shift back to human form, my head smaller, it will be easier to get out of the choke, but as soon as I shift back, someone plunges a syringe in my back, shooting some poison in me. I feel my energy leaving me completely, and I drop to my knees, the silver chain still choking my neck.
I blink a few times, watching my kitten, still unconscious on the floor.
I haven’t been able to save her, not even this time.
“Hazel,” I whisper, knowing that she can’t hear me, but wanting to give her one last goodbye anyway. “I love you.”
