Mine to Protect Chapter 141: MY BLUE
*Hazel*
Everything happens in seconds, but to me it felt like ours, the time stretching out painfully slow, showing everything happening frame by frame.
The mutant presses the trigger over and over, emptying his gun on us, I see the bullets dart towards us, but none of them reach us. They get all blocked by my shield, which has now taken on hues of blue, different from the yellowish color it had before. I wonder if its new color has anything to do with the fact that the shield was able to destroy the bullet this time.
Derek releases me from his strong hug, keeping his hands on my arms, and immediately checks me over for injuries.
“Are you alright kitten?” he asks worriedly.
I answer while keeping the shield up around us.
“I am, but you never do that again! I know that you want to protect me, but not at the cost of your life! How would I feel if you died to protect me? I would die of guilt! So, you see, in the end you wouldn’t have saved me, because I would die anyway!” I scolded him, crossing my arms over my chest.
Derek chuckles at my reaction, earning a scathing glare from me.
“You know how we Alphas need to protect the pack and our loved ones; I just can’t help myself. So, don’t ask me to stop protecting you, because it’s not something I can do, it’s ingrained in who I am,” he says seriously.
“I am not asking you not to protect me, but not at the cost of your life! That’s not protecting, that’s suicide,” I point out, still scared by the thought of losing him.
“That sounds like the same thing to me,” he answers stubbornly.
Arghh, this man can be really irritating sometimes!
“Go punch or kill someone, I will work on the shield, it seems to be working again,” I say, while walking a few steps away from him.
Immediately I see the change in color in the shield, it’s back to yellowish white, why? A bullet flies my way, passing right through my shield and scratching my shoulder, making me yelp in pain. Shit! Why?
Derek immediately tackles me to the ground, preventing other bullets from reaching me, I see them fly right above our heads, and this time I am grateful for his prompt intervention.
More mutants are taking out their guns, and fear and horror fill me, we will never be able to dodge all their bullets, how many will die because of their shots?
Still covered like a blanket by my Godlike mate, I start blasting all the mutants holding a gun I can see, trying not to blast off anyone of our warriors in the process, and that’s when I notice that my blasts are not white anymore, they have assumed a hue of blue, like the shield had.
Derek gets up in a flash, ready to defend me from any attacker, and in that exact moment, my blast goes back to its normal white color. That’s when it clicks, Derek is the key, he’s the blue!
I jump immediately on my feet, and grab his hand, at the same time concentrating on creating a shield around the both of us and on each of our warriors, even around that idiot of Alpha Jackson and his warriors, at the end of the day, he seems to have been tricked the same as us.
The shields are in place right before the bullets can reach anyone, and a smile of victory spreads on my lips. Take this, stupid mutants! Now we are untouchable again.
“How did you do that? I thought the shield wasn’t working anymore,” Derek asks me curiously, and a little in awe, gazing at the bluish shield which is covering him from head to toe.
I get on my tiptoes, place my hands at the back of his neck and kiss his lips softly.
“It’s because I have found my blue,” I tell him smiling, still pressed closely against him. He furrows his brows in confusion, not understanding the meaning of my words, but he’s soon distracted by a mutant coming at us, his long claws ready to sink into our soft flesh.
Derek tries to free himself from my hold and attack the mutant, but I stop him, enforcing my hold on his neck.
“Not that fast, Alpha! You are my blue, if you leave me, the shield will fall,” I tell him through the mind-link, not wanting anyone to overhear. If they get a whiff that this is Derek’s doing, they will try to get his blood, or worse kill him.
Derek’s eyes widen in shock, and for a moment he looks at me like I have grown two heads.
I can’t help a small laugh, he’s so cute when he’s confused, a far cry from his usual self-assured self.
The mutant, in the meantime, tries to attack us with his claws, but our shield holds, and burns him instead.
“I am not sure what changed either, but when you are close to me, or maybe when you touch me, our powers mix together and the shield becomes effective again,” I explain what I have found out.
His expression changes from one of confusion, to a pensive one, I can practically see the wheels turning in his brain, and I wonder what thoughts are going through his mind.
“Do you think, I have powers too now?” he asks with a sparkle in his eyes.
“It’s possible! You could try to harness them. But maybe, wait until the attack is over, we don’t want to influence the shield for the moment.”
“Right, so, now what are we going to do?” Derek asks a little helpless.
He is a man of action, and staying to the side not doing anything, when everybody else is fighting, is making him feel useless and awkward.
So, I cup his face in my hands, and kiss his lips passionately, infusing all my love and passion in this kiss, hoping that my love can make him feel a little better, distract him for a while.
His strong arms grab me by my waist, bringing me close, while he deepens the kiss, taking the lead and speeding up the pace. It takes my everything to keep concentrated enough on my powers to maintain the shield in place, while all I want is lose myself in the warmth of my hot mate.
In this moment, when we are together like this, the battlefield disappears, all this fighting and struggling loses its meaning, and the only thing that matters is us.
“Alpha, you must take a look at this!” Ryder calls from the east side of the valley.
Derek and I open our eyes at the same time, it feels like waking from a spell, lost in our perfect pink bubble, suddenly we awake to the field of a massacre.
The ground is littered with bodies and pieces of bodies, the majority are mutants, but some of our warriors have lost their lives too, and my heart aches for them, and for their loved ones, who will probably already know about their tragic end.
I wish I could turn back time, make them live again, but that’s something not even the Goddess can do, and the knowledge that their deaths are in part my fault, makes my heart squeezed in pain. If my life could bring them back, I would willingly give it up.
Derek caresses my face with his thumb, while he gazes at me softly.
“It’s not your fault, stop beating yourself. Battles happen, and people die, that’s how it is. The only thing we can do, is honor our dead and bring comfort and support to their families.”
But I shake my head, not convinced by his words. There wouldn’t have been a battle if I hadn’t set up this meeting, and Alice wouldn’t have been kidnapped if I hadn’t killed Carol for my stupid revenge. It is my fault in the end, the circle closes with me, I am the cause of it all.
Derek furrows his brows, feeling my sadness, guilt and regret raging through the bond, but he doesn’t have the chance to say anything more, because Ryder calls him again towards the east side, with more urgency.
Derek jogs towards him, while I decide to stay behind, to ponder on things, and check on Alpha Jackson, the guy owns me some explanation.
