Mine to Protect Chapter 74: RUNNING

*Hazel*

The soldiers don’t wait another second and charge at me again, this time not bothered by my illusion of burning residues. They are fast, as fast as werewolves, and I can’t help wondering again what they are, an existing species I am unaware of, or something created anew. A hunch tells me that what they were doing in that lab, and what I am seeing now are strictly related together, and I feel bile rise to my throat in disgust. They have created monsters, abominations, and are now using them like animals to do their bidding.

The people who orchestrated this are disgusting pieces of garbage, without an ounce of humanity, and as soon as I’ll find them, I will destroy them all.

The soldiers have nearly reached me, and I can’t delay my attack any longer, I will white light to blind them, to make them stop, but it doesn’t deter them, so I use the heat to keep them at bay, but even if their skin is peeling off in pieces, they still keep charging towards me, knowing that if they stopped their attack, they will be dead anyway.

My heart aches for them, stuck between two fires, forced to fight to the death, in the name of what?

I want to spare them, but it will mean losing mine and Lukas’ life, and I can’t have that. So, with a heavy heart, I gather all the power I can conjure, and send a huge blast of power in front of me, incinerating everything that stands within 500 metres distance from me. It leaves a path of dark burnt ground and ashes floating in the air, the house, the monsters, their commander, the car, a piece of forest, everything has gone, reduced to dust.

But I have a feeling that we are not safe yet, Alpha Preston must have been in cahoots with our attackers, there is no way they could have trespassed on his territory without him noticing, and pack members and his warriors should have heard all this commotion. This house was far away from the pack main centre, but not that far.

Why has no one come to our rescue? Or are they planning to attack us too?

We need to hide!

Derek, come soon, please!

I kneel behind Lukas’ head, trying not to stare at his naked body and his impressive family jewels, and snake my arms under his armpits, hooking them there, then I stand on my feet, bent down like an old lady, and start pulling Lukas’ heavy body towards the forest, hoping I can make it before someone comes and spots us. Maybe they are already watching us, they just don’t dare come closer.

It takes me forever to pull him to a secure enough spot, with many stops to take my breath, and to curse out loud at my predicament. Then I shift to my wolf, feeling too exposed in my human naked form, and I keep watch of my surroundings, waiting for the next attack I know it is to come.

I don’t know how much time passes, it feels like an eternity, finally Lukas stirs and wakes up, he sists up, clutching his head with his hand.

“Are you feeling all right?” I mind-link him anxiously. He doesn’t look good at all.

“Yes, like I’ve just been hit by a train.” His sarcastic reply comes.

Ok, maybe I should have left him there in the open and saved me all the hassle.

“Where are we? What happened?” he asked, confused.

I shift back to my human form, because I feel more comfortable talking then mind-talking, and I catch him checking me out. Maybe he is just checking me for injuries.

I put him up to date with what happened, and he looks impressed by my doing, unbelieving even.

“Are you sure you are telling me the facts as they are, and not inflating things a little?” he asks suspiciously.

“How dare you? After I saved your heavy ass? I would turn you into a small pile of ashes if I wasn’t afraid of giving my position away.”

“My ass is nothing but heavy, it is quite sexy really,” he says, eyeing his butt, and giving it a slap.

“I wish I could unsee what I have just witnessed,” I reply flabbergasted.

“What? This?” Lukas slaps his naked bottom again. “Getting turned on, Luna Hazel?”

“No, I am just speechless and a little disgusted,” I say, making a face.

Suddenly Lukas jumps up, and puts a hand on my mouth, to silence me; I hastily push his hand away repulsed, it is the same hand he used to slap his butt, yuck!

“Someone’s here,” he warns through the link.

We shift into our wolves and paying close attention I can hear too the sound of rustling of bushes and faint steps not far away from our location.

“We need to move. Derek said he would contact your Beta to send a rescue team, and Derek is on his way too. You could try to mind-link your Beta to ask for help,” I say through the link.

We walk slowly in the opposite direction those suspicious rumors are coming from, getting deeper into the forest.

“My Beta and warriors are stuck at the entrance gate. Preston won’t grant them access. If they try to enter by force, they will start a war,” Lukas reports through the mind-link.

“Then the only way is for us to get out of here, although I am not really sure where we are,” I reply, a little dejected.

“Leave that to me, I know the way, we just need to head east.”

Now that we have a plan and a goal, we pick up speed running through the thick forest, the sound of footsteps following behind us, and I wonder why they haven’t attacked us yet.

In the distance I can see the high metal barrier which runs the pack’s perimeter, we are nearly out!

My excitement is soon snuffed out by a contingent of warriors running in our direction. They must be Preston’s warriors; they are running fast, with claws and fangs already drawn out, ready to attack. Our chasers are also closing in on us, getting nearer by the second; they have played us, and like idiots we have run right into their trap.

Trapped between two fronts we have no way to escape, what are we going to do?

“Now is the time to show off some of your powers, little wolf. Unless you were really just bragging,” Lukas says through the link.

“I’ll show you who was bragging! If you can keep your eyes open,” I reply smugly.

I summon my powers and enclose us into a huge ball of glowing light; our attackers stop in their tracks, unable to keep their eyes open, while we keep running in their direction, hoping to pass through their ranks while they are still dazed.

We are right in the middle of the enemy group, when darts and bullets start raining on us; many warriors get hit and crumble to the floor lifeless.

Why are they attacking their own people? Aren’t they on the same side?
