"Let's go play!" Lucien told Nina.

He steadied Nina while she gripped the scooter, and the two of them zoomed off giggling.

With the kids gone, the adults settled onto the sofas.

Vincent turned to William. "Any news from David about Ryan?"

"Not yet. Should be soon," William replied.

Vincent asked, "Good. How's the welcome banquet for Nina coming along?"

William was treating Nina's first official appearance as a Graham like a big event.

He cared so much that he kept nitpicking every detail.

The more he nitpicked, the longer it remained not held.

William said, a rare sparkle in his eyes, "Almost ready.

"Have you two prepared the big gifts for Nina yet?

"If they're too light, I won't let her play with you."

Vincent threw his head back and laughed, "Relax. My gift will blow her little mind."

Both families had old money—deep roots and deeper pockets.

The Wilson family was wealthy, too, but it was all Jane's fortune.

Gideon had never truly held power there.

The reins had passed straight from Jane's father to Freya.

Gideon lacked for nothing, but he wasn't the one in charge.

At the mention of gifts, Gideon smiled warmly, "Mine's ready too."

While the adults chatted, Lucien leaned in to inspect Nina's eyes.

"Are your eyes all better?" he asked.

"All better!" Nina blinked up at him with a soft, squishy grin.

Lucien ruffled her hair.

"Nina, I won't be able to play with you much longer. School's starting soon.

"Once school starts, I can only take you out on Sundays.

"The rest of the time I have homework and extra classes.

"My mom doesn't tutor me herself; she hires people to do it."

Lucien sighed like a grown-up about his problems as a big kid.

Nina tilted her head, not quite understanding. "Nina go school!"

Nina didn't resist school at all; she liked going to play with other kids.

There were fun facilities at school too. She really enjoyed it.

Lucien sighed, "Nina, you only went to preschool. And only for two days.

"Give it two more days, and you'll hate it too."

Nina had never really been to a proper school.

She'd only done short activity classes with Amelia—logic games, music—mostly play-based, an hour or two at most.

Preschool did teach a few things, but after two days, chaos struck, and Amelia kept her home.

The two little ones were still chatting when the grown-ups called them in for lunch.

At the table, Nina sat in her high chair, mouth open like a baby bird while William fed her.

While feeding her, William said to Vincent, "Vincent, put the fruit away for now. Don't let Nina see it.

"If she sees it, she'll want to eat it."

Vincent looked confused. "They're for her. She can have some after."

William shook his head. "No. She's allergic to strawberries. She and her mom both are."

As soon as William mentioned the allergy, Vincent quickly removed the strawberries.

Nina was focused on playing with the small model Lucien had given her.

She didn't notice the strawberries, so she didn't fuss.

She played and ate lunch at the same time, while the adults continued their meal. Only Gideon looked a little melancholic.

His missing little daughter had also been allergic to strawberries when she was young.

Meanwhile, Benjamin and Amelia had no such luxurious lunch.

They were pressed for time and had grabbed some bread and milk from a supermarket.

Amelia tore open a packet of bread and took a bite, frowning.

But to avoid wasting it, she decided to finish it.

Just as she was about to take a second bite, Benjamin took the bread from her.

"Here, eat this one." He handed her a different-flavored bread.

The bread Amelia had bitten into, which she found unappetizing, was eaten by Benjamin in just a few bites.

His actions were so natural that Amelia didn't notice right away.

"You... you..." Amelia opened her mouth, hesitated, then said, "This bread wasn't good."

"It's fine," Benjamin said, gesturing for her to try the new flavor.

Benjamin was always attentive like that—he'd already torn the packaging open for her.

Whenever they were together, the water bottles he handed her always had the caps already twisted open.

Besides being thoughtful toward Amelia, Benjamin was also attentive to Nina.
