Henry's words had gotten to him.

Truth was, he'd been avoiding that thought, bouncing back and forth between the two women.

Just like with Wendy and Sherry before. That whole mess had ended badly.

This time, he'd convinced himself Julia was right, so he'd set aside their history.

He deliberately looked the other way. But deep down, there was still something there. No matter what, Wendy had been like a little sister to him for two years.

He'd laid into her without mercy earlier. And now here was Sherry, just sitting there, sipping her soup like nothing was wrong. The background music playing meant this place wasn't cheap either.

Wendy would be in Zalari soon, surviving on God knows what, and Sherry was out here dropping serious cash on dinner?

It left him pissed and bitter, like the bad guys were living it up while the good ones got screwed.

And Sherry had the nerve to question him?

Sherry listened to his rant. "Huh.

"You're saying I'm the reason you shipped her off to Zalari? That was my idea?"

Sure, she'd wanted Wendy to face consequences for what she'd done.

Whether Wendy was manipulated or not, that wasn't Sherry's problem. Sherry was the victim here, plain and simple.

But this? Zalari?

That was next level.

And now he was blaming her for it?

"Or did I personally drag her there myself?"

Gilbert was already fuming. Blaming Sherry for everything felt right somehow—eased the guilt, made him feel less cruel.

People would get his struggle. They wouldn't think he was some cold-blooded jerk because every single thing he did had a reason.

It was all because of Sherry. "You're telling me this isn't your fault?"

"You're saying Wendy's actions have nothing to do with you? Everything led to this—because of you, she's suffering in Zalari!"

"That's rich. You think Wendy listens to me? After everything, what do you think she thinks of me?"

Anyone who'd spent time with Wendy knew she wasn't exactly brilliant. Not that you'd notice right away. Sherry hadn't been around long enough.

She met him, then framed her.

And then they both left.

So whether before or now, in Wendy's mind, Sherry didn't even measure up to him. Someone beneath him—how would she ever listen to that kind of person?

Gilbert knew that better than anyone.

Whenever something happened, he'd be there saying Wendy was better than Sherry, even though she was younger.

"You know she'd never listen to me. But fine—I'll give you one thing. I gave Wendy those files."

Gilbert latched onto it like a lifeline. "And you say it has nothing to do with you? If you hadn't sent those files, how would she have gone to those extremes and ended up like this today?"

"First of all, Julia gave me those files. I just passed them to the victim. If giving someone information makes them snap, then by your logic, I should shoot Julia too.

"And if I'm wrong, isn't Julia even more guilty? She's the one who gave me the files.

"So either you ship Julia off to Zalari too, and I'll go with her. The three of us can play cards."

For a second, Gilbert almost thought she had a point. But no—this was just Sherry being defensive. She was good at that.

"Stop dragging Julia into this!"

"What else am I supposed to do? Whatever grudge those two have, you're not pinning that on me. I'm an outsider. You think I made the two sisters turn on each other?"

"You—" Gilbert found himself speechless for once.

Then Henry grabbed the phone. "Sherry, you're just trying to play the victim here, aren't you? But tell me truthfully—are you happy about what happened to Wendy?"

"Happy? Of course I'm happy."

Henry's face went cold. "I knew it. You've been hiding it well, even from me—"

"Why wouldn't I be happy? She switched my medication—my body still hasn't fully recovered. She set me up and I ended up in jail with a record because of her."
