He Chose the So-Called Sister Chapter 407: A Tarnished Reputation
Wasn't she mocking her for being old?
Then fine. She'd make Sherry old ahead of schedule. Let her carry that reek of piss everywhere she went. Any man who saw her would run. Sherry brought this on herself for daring to cross her.
This was the price of offending her.
"You met Mrs. Lockwood last time, didn't you? She doesn't dare disobey her husband in the slightest. Besides, you've given Sherry more than enough freedom already. A society wife shouldn't have that much liberty—you gain some, you lose some."
It was true; Mrs. Lockwood had been practically unhinged. If any woman so much as stood near her husband, she'd lunge forward and tear into her without mercy.
Her husband wasn't exactly in the right, but what man didn't keep company with women for show? It was part of the job. He certainly couldn't drag his embarrassing wife along to events, could he?
She just wasn't fit to be seen in public.
"When you put it that way, Ms. Gable really does know how to handle people. Mrs. Lockwood is as docile as a kitten now."
No one cared why she was so docile, what had happened to her, what she was thinking, if she was hurting, or if she was in pain.
All that mattered was that she obeyed.
"The longer it takes effect, the better it works. It'll last her entire life, and Sherry won't change a bit."
Of course she wouldn't. Even if she was tough and she hadn't been broken completely, they had plenty of humiliating footage of Sherry in their hands.
She'd have to beg them constantly not to leak it. And eventually, it would "accidentally" get out.
Sherry's fate would be utter ruin.
When that happened, he wouldn't have to lift a finger—Gilbert would despise her, and Lucas would hate her even more.
A woman Gilbert found repulsive would be even beneath Lucas. Even putting those two men in the same sentence with Sherry was an insult to them.
Even an average man, a lonely bachelor, wouldn't look twice at her.
Gilbert thought back to the old days. No matter how late he came home, Sherry always left a light on for him.
She couldn't sleep until he returned. Even in the middle of the night, she'd get up to wait on him.
Now he lived at Splendor Villa, with no one waiting up for him.
He couldn't blame Julia, though. She slept heavily, worn out from her busy days.
And the family maid couldn't get up in the middle of the night just to cook for him—it was outside her working hours. She couldn't be expected to do it night after night or pour him a warm cup of coffee to chase off the chill.
No one but a wife would think to do that for you the second you walked in late. Lately, he'd felt strangely empty from time to time.
The excitement and joy he'd felt when Julia first came back had faded. He found himself craving the meals Sherry used to make. Once, he'd thought her pickled dishes weren't classy enough.
But after eating out so often, home-cooked meals felt precious. The maid's cooking didn't come close to Sherry's.
He thought Sherry must be done throwing her fit by now. It was time for her to come home.
She'd better behave herself.
Julia bit her lip suddenly. "There's something I should probably tell you. Sherry's trending on Twitter again. It looks like she's having another falling-out with the Campbell family."
Everyone online was waiting for her to respond.
They were giving her until tomorrow. The Campbells had already suffered losses because of her, and they were family, after all.
She should come forward, apologize, and make things right.
Some comments read: [I'm not the favorite in my family either, and I've suffered just as much as Sherry. But if my family had to sacrifice everything for me, I'd be absolutely ashamed. No matter what, family shares glory and ruin together.]
[It's way too much to make the entire Campbell family apologize for this.]
Julia believed that once Sherry came out of there, it wouldn't just be her body that stank—her reputation would be destroyed too.
She'd never recover for the rest of her life.
"The Campbells?" Gilbert had never thought much of the Campbell family.
A bunch of useless people.
"You don't have to pay attention to their drama."
They kept making a scene over the same tiny crap. Just hearing about it was annoying enough.
They couldn't cause any real trouble anyway, so let them be. More importantly, he had no desire to help. The second he stepped in, that family would swarm over like bloodsucking leeches.
Families like that should never be given a chance to attach themselves to someone like him.
He didn't even bother asking what had happened—exactly how Julia wanted it.
Julia pulled out her phone and sent Bryan a message, "I've already fixed the online situation. I don't know how your family let it drag on this long when it's so easy to handle."
