Sherry's room was next to his. She'd slowed down, letting them get ahead.

When she reached her door, ready to crash, someone grabbed her from another room and tried to pull her inside.

Kurt poured her coffee.

"My eyes should be filled with gratitude right now." His voice was flat. "I've imagined this moment so many times. How emotional I'd be, finally meeting my savior.

"I'd do anything for her. Anyone who'd risk her life like that had to be the kindest person in the world."

Nothing in his expression matched his words.

"Until yesterday, that's what I believed."

He crossed his legs, leaned back—not a trace of thankfulness.

"Lucky this happened, or you'd have fooled me." His gaze hardened. "I should've known. People change. Age twists them. Being kind as a kid doesn't make you a good adult.

"You hide it well, though. I didn't see through you at first.

"If Julia hadn't warned me, if I'd kept giving you favors without end, then I'd be the one getting played."

Sherry stared at him, speechless.

They hadn't even had a conversation, and he'd already decided she was a fraud. "Well, thank you for that assessment. Also? Good to know I saved not just a person, but a complete moron."

Kurt's hand jerked. Probably the first time anyone had called him that.

His expression shifted to "I knew it."

"I had a tiny doubt before. Now I fully believe Julia. You're a bad person."

"You stole her man. She gave her first love back to you. Now she's with Lucas, and you still want to take him from her too? You just have to steal other women's men?

"You know what matters for a woman? Decency. You're married. Stay away from other men. But you're living in another man's house!"

Kurt's chest heaved, as if he'd been cheated on himself.

"Gilbert is a saint for putting up with you. If you were my wife, I'd have taught you a hundred times over. Men have pride. You don't cross that line.

"Your only move now? Apologize to your husband and beg him to forgive you."

Sherry almost laughed at this lunatic. "Are you brain-dead? You just believe whatever anyone tells you? Even if you don't check social media, you should at least ask around about Julia and me online..."
