Sherry finally figured out where that gnawing anxiety came from. "So you teamed up to screw us over?

"That man? He kidnapped my friend. Threatened to kill him if I didn't—"

Julia scoffed, "Kidnapped who? Evidence?"

"Max! He was supposed to pick me up. He disappeared. And that man admitted—"

A video cut her off.

Max seemed to be somewhere super remote, not even looking like he was in the country, but he looked healthy, just busy. "Sherry! Sorry, forgot to arrange someone for you. You okay?

"Listen, I found something huge—"

No one cared about whatever he'd found. They watched Sherry's face.

"That's not—he made me think—he set it up so I'd believe—"

Julia cut in again, slicing her words clean. "You keep talking, but where's the proof? We brought evidence. You? Nothing. Words are cheap."

Sherry had no proof. She'd never imagined these two things connected.

If she pushed, they'd probably expose that she'd eaten out with this man and even watched a movie.

"Julia." Sherry's fists clenched. "You went to a lot of trouble to drag me down to your level."

She was played like a puppet in Julia's hands.

She even had news about Max, while Sherry knew nothing.

Max had sent it to her.

The timestamp said two days ago. But two days ago, she hadn't received any video.

"That video's been in your phone for days. You saw it. Now you're pretending it's new, trying to blame me." Julia's voice dropped, wounded. "You ruined my movie. Took everything. Now you want my life too? What do I have to do to make you stop?"

Julia let out a soft sob, and Gilbert snapped.

"That's enough. Aren't you ashamed yet?" Gilbert slapped the table.

"All this time, you've been whining about unfairness. And now? You've done worse.

"Happy now? Satisfied? From now on, stop acting like everyone owes you something.

"Stop with the melodrama, grab your luggage, and get back home. Stop disgracing us out here. Be obedient, like before—wash clothes and cook at home. I'll come back on time.

"And I'll pretend none of this ever happened.

His expression said, "Be grateful. I'm being generous."

Adam called for a recess.
