He Chose the So-Called Sister Chapter 409: A Nuisance
After their short conversation last time, Sherry realized Lucas must have done something to keep Irene from confronting her.
And whatever he did had cost him dearly.
Before this, no matter what was going on, the two of them were always together. But lately, his workload had obviously gotten a lot heavier.
He was coming home less and less, and they barely saw each other anymore.
It had to be connected to this, and deeply so.
Lucas showed no mercy to ordinary enemies.
The only reason he'd gone to such lengths was the complicated dynamics of his own family.
Sherry tugged gently at his sleeve—a small gesture, since he was driving and couldn't be distracted.
"Since we're talking about dates, I'm giving Adam one more chance.
"If this divorce still doesn't go through, he can drop his 'undefeated' reputation and call himself a total failure. A date? Not a chance."
She knew courts rarely granted a divorce in the first filing.
But she had to turn up the pressure on Adam.
Lucas focused on only one thing. "So you will go on a date with me."
It was a statement, not a question.
Sherry crossed her arms confidently. "We'll see how you behave."
"So I do have a chance." Lucas leaned in suddenly.
His strikingly handsome face filled her vision, accompanied by a clean, fresh scent. His deep eyes and soft lips seemed to beg her to kiss him.
She was utterly spellbound until she glanced outside.
She was about to push Lucas away, but someone outside beat her to it, tapping sharply on the car window.
She could see the woman outside tucking loose hair behind her ear, acting coy.
They had arrived home, and the woman knocking was Julia.
She hadn't spotted anyone inside yet and kept rapping on the door.
Sherry couldn't let her see her in there.
In the next second, Lucas' eyes darkened.
His soft lips pressed down on hers in a possessive, unyielding kiss.
Sherry froze, then shifted from shyness to quiet acceptance.
It was gentle, intoxicating—nothing like Gilbert, who never cared about her comfort, kissed roughly as if proving his charm, and made her never want to kiss him again.
Lucas' lips were warm, soft, and wonderful.
Sherry boldly wrapped her arms around his neck and nipped his lip lightly.
"The door's about to break!"
Julia was fraying, unable to keep her composure.
She'd knocked politely, yet no one answered. She even craned her neck, trying to peer inside.
"What a nuisance," Lucas muttered, referring to Julia.
He turned back to Sherry. "But you're utterly captivating."
Sherry tapped his arm, worried they'd be seen.
Lucas sighed—both Gilbert and Julia were nothing but interruptions.
He stepped out of the car, his tall frame blocking Julia's curious gaze.
Julia was disappointed not to see anyone inside. Once she'd gotten rid of Sherry, no woman belonged by Lucas' side, only men.
Julia spoke, "I came here for something important—it's about Sherry. I've never met someone so irresponsible.
"Didn't Sherry skip work today? Gilbert told me she's traveling with his mother. They've made up, and she's probably staying at Bode Villa tonight.
"You don't know about Sherry's little notebook, do you? It's filled with things she wanted to do with Gilbert. I've seen it—full of silly, romantic thoughts. Gilbert apologized and begged for her forgiveness, and they got back together.
"I speak from experience. When a woman considers a second relationship, she almost always goes back to her first husband. Especially since they're still married. It makes sense. Every woman remembers her first man, and Ms. Campbell is no different."
Julia knew exactly how to drive a wedge between them.
Men's pride in this area was stronger than anything.
No man could stand the woman he wanted thinking of another—especially a husband she could never fully escape.
As a married woman herself, she understood women's minds better than anyone, making her words believable.
All she needed was to plant doubt in Lucas' mind.
"It sounds like you can't let go of your late husband to say things like that."
Lucas refused to play along. His words left Julia frozen and flustered.
