Refusing to back down, Julia kept pressing the doorbell repeatedly. She'd even packed a small bag and come over prepared to stay.

It wasn't that she was desperate to marry.

For people in their social circle, hesitation for even a second could let someone else take what they wanted.

She'd never felt this anxious before, but after losing so badly to Sherry, she wasn't going to let anyone else interfere.

She was going to have Lucas, no matter what.

Giving up wasn't in her vocabulary. She lingered by the front gate, pacing back and forth where she could be seen through the windows, putting on a pitiful act.

She waited from night until dawn, and at some point, she'd fallen asleep right there.

She was woken up by Heather.

Heather had always liked Julia—she was incredibly generous with gifts and never skimped on favors.

"What are you doing sleeping out here?" Heather frowned. "Did that little bitch Sherry lock you out? Can't you even handle her?"

She was starting to doubt Julia's abilities.

Julia shook her head. Others might not know, but she did.

Whoever Lucas ended up with still needed the Harrison family's approval. What good did it do for a fool like Sherry to win just a little of Lucas' affection?

She was just being played for fun, nothing more.

To truly take the position of Mrs. Harrison, she had to work both sides—win Lucas' love and the favor of his family.

"No, I just got here. I wanted to surprise Mr. Harrison."

Heather's brow furrowed deeper. "Surprise him? Are you trying to seduce Lucas?"

Julia disliked the word. "Seduce? Hardly. Let me ask you—would you rather have Sherry as the next Mrs. Harrison... or me?"

Heather's face darkened. She hadn't realized Julia had set her sights that high.

She'd thought Julia was after Sherry's husband, while Sherry was the shameless one chasing another man despite being married.

Turned out both of them were nothing but gold-diggers.

"Why the long face, Heather? Did I say something wrong?" Julia didn't think she'd said anything out of line.

But she could tell Heather was clearly annoyed.

Heather forced a bitter smile. "Even if Sherry's out of the question, that doesn't mean it's going to be you. You're nowhere near qualified to marry into the Harrison family."

Julia bristled. She could take a lot, but not being called unqualified. "Are you kidding me? How many women do you know who build a career and stay a star at the same time?"

Heather almost laughed out loud. "Plenty. Tons of celebrities have businesses. Some just keep them private. You're not the first.

"Do you really think you're that special?"

Julia's expression soured. "It's not the same. They run small businesses. I'm building my own company and becoming CEO.

"Those celebrities just open clothing brands or little shops at most. I'm a real female executive."

Heather had avoided a fight, but Julia's arrogance was too much. "A real executive? That's the funniest thing I've ever heard.

"You have a company, but who got it for you? Sherry's husband. Without him, you'd be nothing. No one in this circle would even look at you."

Julia scoffed, "You clearly don't know me at all. Do you really think Gilbert is the only one backing me?"

Heather studied her, wondering if she was hiding something. But every detail about Julia's background had already been dug up by gossip columns.

How could there be more?

She didn't believe it for a second. If Julia really had more to boast about, she would have shouted it from the rooftops already.

"I'll tell you this—go to Keiperian and ask about a woman named Scarlett. You'd better find out who she really is, what she's accomplished, and how much power she really has."
