He Chose the So-Called Sister Chapter 418: A Feast Like No Other

4 min 1 views

Nothing about this spread looked like anything you'd find at a regular restaurant.

It was downright bizarre to see all of these dishes laid out together on a single table.

Then there was the mango caviar. And right beside it, a bottle of rare 1926 Macallan Scotch whisky.

Sherry's mind practically short-circuited.

A few people she didn't recognize were seated with them, and everyone's expressions were equally conflicted.

Their eyes all said the same thing: Sherry really did have the special taste.

Only someone with serious means could pull off a spread like this.

Sherry inched awkwardly over toward Lucas, though they still kept a small distance between them. "You saw that... embarrassing notebook of mine."

She couldn't even bring herself to say it was the list of a hundred things she'd once planned to do with Gilbert.

One page had been filled with exactly these foods.

The lobster tail was one thing.

She'd noted everything else so clearly because she'd once thought that someday, when they had enough money, she could enjoy all of this with Gilbert.

But that never happened.

All those fancy restaurants and gourmet dishes—Sherry only ever saw them on Wendy's Facebook.

If she'd never dared to hope for any of it in the first place, she never would've felt regret.

But the Bodes had more than enough money. Gilbert just refused to take her, even bringing other people along—his entire work team had tried all those fine foods.

Everyone but Sherry.

Once, when she'd mentioned wanting to go, Gilbert had looked her up and down with cold disdain. "You don't even know how to eat properly. Coming with us would just embarrass me.

"Besides, these things are for people who understand them. You know nothing. You wouldn't even know how to eat them. You'd just be wasting expensive ingredients."

The message was clear.

She was too low-class to deserve any of it.

Yet she'd thrown that notebook away ages ago. "You... you didn't... dig it out of the trash..."

Before she could finish speaking, a piece of steak was placed into her mouth.

It was almost unthinkable that a man who could easily afford all of this had once refused to let her have any of it.

But Lucas loved her.

Rules didn't matter, and whether the table setting made sense didn't matter either. If she wanted something, he'd put it right in front of her.

Still, she couldn't help but thank her ex-husband for being so terrible.

It made her ache for the old Sherry. Not everyone loved fancy food like this, but from her expressions, Lucas could tell exactly what she liked and what she didn't—and the things she disliked never appeared on their menu again.

He'd even sent a list to his chefs at Harrison Group.

That was why Sherry had gained weight so quickly.

With delicious food in her stomach, all her old memories faded away. Every painful thing from the past could just disappear.

"This whisky is amazing," Sherry mumbled, holding her glass, already a little tipsy.

She'd never had anyone to rely on, so she'd always had to stay sharp and sober.

Once, she'd gotten drunk to drown her sorrows and hadn't cooked dinner for the returning Gilbert. As punishment, he'd stayed away from home for two full months.

Those two months had been pure torture. She'd been terrified he was cheating on her, terrified he was sleeping in the same bed as Julia.

All of that pain vanished along with the burn of the whisky.

But Selena was drinking even more heavily.

She downed glass after glass, tears streaming down her face nonstop. When others asked what was wrong, she said nothing, just kept drinking.

Ivy wanted to drink too, but Leo sat beside her, taking away every glass she poured. "We're friends—I'll drink for you."

That only made Ivy cry harder.

The atmosphere in the room was as awkward as it could get.

Strange as it all was, everyone seemed to have accepted the weird energy.

Surprisingly, some of the foods actually paired well together.

"These are my friends from Keiperian," Lucas said. "If anything happens to you, or if I'm not around, you can go to any of them for help."

Sherry sobered up a little, carefully memorizing every face.

Then Lucas answered a phone call. Everyone else tensed up immediately.

They pretended to keep drinking and chatting, but every single one of them was listening closely to his conversation.

No one knew what the person on the other end was saying.

"I have to go handle something," he said. Remembering they were abroad, in a country Sherry had never visited before, he added, "It involves something about Julia. I need to go check if it's true.

"You can head upstairs to rest once you're done eating."

Sherry wanted to go with him, but her head was throbbing—the whisky had a brutal kick. "Come back soon. Will you be home tonight?"
