He Chose the So-Called Sister Chapter 385: The Burn Scar
"I never felt a single benefit from being Mrs. Bode. Waiting in line like everyone else was fine. I didn't compete with Wendy, Julia, or whoever Gilbert cared about most.
"But at least I shouldn't have been dragged away right when my turn finally came—before I even got treated."
"Want to guess what Gilbert told me? Oh, and that burn? It happened because he made me use an unfamiliar tool to make broth for Wendy."
Henry's face darkened. He could guess what came next.
"Exactly what you're thinking. He forbade me from getting treatment. Because if I was treated, it would prove he'd hurt his own wife for Wendy.
"It would ruin both their reputations.
"He called me dramatic. Said he'd never heard of someone burning themselves badly enough to need a hospital. Called me spoiled.
"I won't ask anyone else—just you, Dr. Webb. Is burning yourself while cooking really that rare? He said I was the first person in the world to do it. Said I embarrassed the Bode name by going to the hospital for nothing."
Henry could barely believe Gilbert had done this.
He could make excuses for other things, but not this—not when it came to basic medical care.
And who would even say something like that? How could that actually come from Gilbert?
Then he saw it—on Sherry's arm, a faint, poorly healed burn scar.
"And your wonderful friend locked me in the house so I wouldn't go to another hospital and talk. He didn't want anyone knowing I'd been hurt making broth for Wendy."
Sherry stared at the scar.
She'd never scarred easily. Her body healed fast. But this mark remained.
All because of Gilbert.
"After that, I only went to Bode hospitals if he took me himself. Otherwise, I'd just be turned away again—no treatment, just humiliation."
She looked coldly at Henry. "Are you satisfied with my explanation? If you don't believe me, check the old registration records. You'll see I signed in... but never got treated."
Sherry spoke with such certainty that Henry had to wonder—was it all true?
No matter how reckless Gilbert got, he wouldn't do something like that, right?
"If you still doubt her, look at this."
Lucas tossed a stack of evidence at Henry.
The papers hit him so hard his glasses fell off.
Getting whacked like that would usually piss anyone off, but the next second, he saw the proof, and he froze.
His hands shook as he held them. In the end, all he could say was, "I'm sorry. We'll talk later."
He left with his tail between his legs.
Sherry stared at Lucas in shock. "What evidence was that? You can't read minds, can you? We were still arguing, and you already showed up with proof?"
His speed was terrifying.
"I didn't bring him here just for surgery. He's good, but he's not irreplaceable. I found out he's been helping Julia.
"If he was just a lackey, I'd let it be. But he acts high-and-mighty, like he's on the side of justice. I'm worried he'll make things worse."
So Lucas had arranged for Henry to come here specifically to hit him with the truth?
Henry loved feeling righteous. Making him realize he'd been on the wrong side would destroy him.
Or twist him even worse.
"I didn't expect him to sink this low. He used to be decent. Now he just peeks at name tags and comes to mock you."
Lucas knew of Henry—they'd never met, but he'd been aware of him for years.
Back when Henry worked at their hospital, he hadn't been this clueless.
Since he'd already done something that stupid, it didn't matter how good his relationship with their hospital used to be. If he was coming for Sherry, he was the enemy.
Sherry's eyes widened.
Henry wasn't even her doctor. He'd just seen her name on the door, come in, and deliberately taunted her.
