He Chose the So-Called Sister Chapter 422: Selena Fell From the Upper Floor
"Julia is impressive, and she's built quite a reputation for herself. Having her as his first love is something he brags about."
One way or another, Julia had made a name for herself.
"That much is true," Lucas said.
"See? Even you think so," Sherry muttered, her lips puffing out unconsciously.
"Someone's being sour. Jealous?" Lucas turned Sherry to face him.
They finally locked eyes.
Sherry had rambled on so easily precisely because she hadn't been looking at his face.
Now that she was, her nerves kicked in.
"Am I wrong? You were practically praising her!"
Part of her was stalling for time—she had no idea how to handle this. She still wasn't sure if this was a real proposal.
She didn't want to misread the situation and end up being painted as the desperate woman who forced him into marriage. She'd been through that once already, and she refused to go through it again.
What she wanted was certainty.
And besides, he had just complimented Julia.
He almost never praised anyone, not even her.
Her pink, pouty lips looked utterly adorable to him.
He'd never found any woman charming before. To him, people who obsessed over their crushes looked ridiculous, blind to obvious flaws. He'd never thought he'd develop such feelings for anyone.
Life had a funny way of proving him wrong.
"I was acknowledging her skill, based on the information we've gathered," he said calmly.
"A lot of misleading fake stories about her have been spread around here. That's why I didn't tell you everything right away—I couldn't sort out what was real and what wasn't, and I didn't want us to follow the wrong lead."
"Is it because she has serious pull here? If we stay, will we..."
If Julia found them, they'd be in deep trouble!
It could definitely put them at a disadvantage.
The Harrisons had no real business or influence in Keiperian.
"I know how powerful she used to be. And that photo you saw... the person who looks just like me—"
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Someone pounded violently on the door.
"Boss! It's bad! Selena fell from the upper floor!"
Sherry froze.
Is she really that bold?
She actually jumped?
They rushed to the hospital overnight.
Selena was still in emergency surgery, estimated to last at least seven hours—an extremely serious procedure.
"How could something like this happen to Selena?" someone murmured.
Ivy snapped around, pointing furiously at Sherry. "You did this! You pushed her!"
Selena was well-liked. She'd sat with the core group at dinner, clearly one of Lucas' closest friends.
To Sherry, these people all seemed powerful and influential, though she couldn't pinpoint their exact status.
They hadn't paid her any mind earlier.
At first, Sherry had thought they were simply professional, like office workers who didn't suck up to strangers and would warm up over time.
But now she realized the truth.
These were powerful people, each a force in their own right.
They ignored her not out of politeness, but because she simply didn't register to them.
To them, she was less than nothing—an ant they acknowledged existed but had no reason to interact with.
This was worse than being looked down on. They didn't see her at all.
Not until Ivy's accusation did every gaze in the room snap to Sherry.
"I saw you both go up to the rooftop earlier. And you came down alone!" Ivy snarled. "Sherry, are you not going to explain yourself? If anything happens to Selena, I swear I'll make you pay!"
"She did follow me upstairs," Sherry said without hesitation. "She told me to hand Lucas over to her, or she'd jump off the building."
Ivy's face twisted with rage, her eyes blazing as if Sherry was a murderer. "You refused, didn't you? How could you be so cruel? Can't you even lie? Selena's just stubborn, not evil! Why would you drive her to this?!"
