He Chose the So-Called Sister Chapter 30: The Two-Day Coma

4 min 1 views

Then the bystander gave Gilbert such a sharp look her eyes nearly rolled back. "So you're helping your other woman attack your own wife? What kind of man does that?"

Gilbert felt like hitting himself. He'd let Sherry get hurt. "She isn't my other woman. She's just a family friend—like a sister. Sherry's my only wife. And always been her."

Yes, he'd made a bad choice. But nobody could say he wasn't faithful.

The bystanders almost laughed in anger. "A sister? More like a 'sweet sister.' You never say a single harsh word to her. And you think she's innocent?"

Gilbert burned with anger. Why did people have such dirty minds?

There was really nothing between him and Wendy!

He always tried to do the right thing.

George walked over with a strange smile. "Gilbert, I didn't know you cared about Wendy so much. You know she holds grudges, yet you still blocked Sherry. Weren't you just helping her get revenge? If you want to marry Wendy, I'll support you first."

His words made the rumors seem true. A big shot like him must know things others didn't. They all knew each other, so it had to be real.

The bystanders got even angrier. "Disgusting. And he was acting so moral."

"George!" Gilbert's eyes showed murder. "Don't think I don't know what you're up to!"

George raised both hands like he was giving up.

The ambulance came and took Sherry to the hospital.

When Sherry woke up, her head hurt terribly like it had been cracked open.

She opened her eyes and saw Scott sleeping in the chair beside her bed.

He heard a sound and woke up completely at once.

"You're awake!" He jumped up, remembering something. "Mr. Bode stayed with you for two days. Then George came when he left and—"

"Stop." Sherry touched her hurting head and cut him off.

She didn't want to hear anything about Gilbert.

Scott was bad at comforting people. He looked stiff and awkward. "Well... I'll get you some food."

Sherry didn't pretend to be polite. She started eating.

Scott relaxed when he saw she wasn't refusing food or getting angry.

Halfway through the meal, Gilbert rushed in, breathing hard.

His hair and clothes were messy and dusty. He looked panicked. In their five years together, she'd never seen him like this.

What was the point of panicking now? She shouldn't have been hit in the first place.

And it was all Gilbert's fault.

Sherry looked at him briefly, then kept eating.

Gilbert's hands shook a little.

For just a moment—so fast he almost missed it—Sherry looked at him like he was her enemy. He saw it.

He stood there, trying to help by straightening her food and water.

To get this kind of care from him, she had to get hurt first.

Wendy only needed to cry a little to get everything she wanted.

"I'm sorry. Sherry, I'm really sorry. I didn't know the bodyguards would actually hit you."

Gilbert lowered his proud head. That was a rare thing for him.

Sherry said nothing, and just ate the oatmeal. Ten minutes later, she finished. "What answer do you want from me?"

Gilbert's hand froze above the table. Her question surprised him. Of course he wanted her to forgive him, to understand him.

"If you don't say it, you won't get the answer you want. You knew the bodyguards would step in. You saw Wendy get hurt and decided I needed to suffer too, maybe even more, to make things even.

"Did you really not know they would lay hands on me?"

Those were the Bode family's bodyguards. Their job was to protect their target and do whatever that person asked.

They didn't lash out for no reason. And even if they did, why her? She didn't even know them.

"I've dealt with those bodyguards. This won't happen again. From now on, I'll protect you. I swear you won't get hurt." He looked at Sherry, uneasy.

This time, Sherry didn't argue about what should happen to Wendy. That alone made Gilbert start to panic.

"Ha." Sherry let out a sharp laugh.

She didn't say a word, yet somehow said everything.

Gilbert's face darkened. "You don't trust me?"

"Answer me this. If Wendy had been the one lying on the floor today, what would you do? You'd probably put a hospital bed right next to hers with my name on it—make me 'pay' with pain.

"Then tell me—what punishment did Wendy get?"

Gilbert's first instinct was to defend. "She's in the hospital too. Her face—"

"Ten minutes and the swelling goes down. My hands aren't poisonous. She cried like I'd killed her and made you think her 'injury' was worse than mine."

Anyone with eyes could see Sherry was badly hurt. Otherwise, she wouldn't have been unconscious for two days before waking up.
