"I'm sorry, Sherry. I guess I was a fool too," Yelena said, embarrassed. "I actually thought Gilbert might change."

If she'd convinced Sherry to give him another chance—and Sherry had believed him—today's choice could have ended horribly.

"I get why you thought that," Sherry said quietly. "For two years, I kept telling myself Gilbert still loved me. We were married. Even if things were bad, I didn't want to accept divorce."

She quickly added, "Not that this applies to you. Gilbert was awful. Anyone with eyes could see Julia could swim."

She hadn't looked panicked at all when she fell.

She'd even jumped gracefully.

"It doesn't matter," Sherry said. "I never expected him to save me. Not being as good as Wendy, not being as good as Julia—it was just an excuse. His heart was already somewhere else.

"First love, sister of first love... it all just meant he was tired of me."

Why hadn't he complained about her when they first met?
