“YOU DIDN’T KNOW! That’s your excuse for why you killed my mate? You say that if you had known that you would have at least kept him alive, but how do I know that you’re telling the truth. None of it matters anymore anyway since he is dead.” She spits at me with so much venom in her voice.

“You’re right. There’s so much that we won’t know because we can’t go back in time. If we could then I would definitely make some changes and I am sure that you would too, especially knowing what you know now. We can’t change the past and goddess knows I wish I could at times, but we can make the future better. We don’t have to keep killing one another. I know you’re hurting, and angry and I don’t blame you because you have lost a lot compared to some people.” I take a deep breath before adding, ”You have my greatest sympathy in the loss of your mate.”

For a brief second, I can see sadness in her eyes and a lone tear slides down the left side of her cheek. Quickly she wipes away the tear and raises her hand sending a gust of wind towards me. The wind stings as it is charged with dark magic, but I stay standing. Some behind me fall to the ground and yell out in pain, but I flick my wrist and the wind disappears. I already took the opportunity to put a shield around the witches while talking to Tabitha. They have been back there chanting behind that bubble the entire time, and I’m hoping that Tabitha or anyone on her side, hasn’t been able to hear them.

“Alex, what are you doing?” says Freya through our mind-link.

“I’m trying to end this without any bloodshed.”

“After everything she has done just take her out and end this. She doesn’t deserve any mercy.” I can hear and feel the anger radiating off of her in waves.

“No, she does deserve mercy and to be able to heal from her loss. Pain is what is making her do all of this and if I can get her to deal with it instead of killing more people that is what I will do. The Coven of Light witches are working on a way to help her.”

“Some people you just can’t help Alex.”

“We won’t know if she can be helped since nobody has ever tried.” I cut the mind-link a little agitated with my mate. I understand that she is upset about losing the soldiers and feels the pain from their mates, but this woman is feeling that same pain and unlike our people, nobody has helped her through it.

“Tabitha, other than revenge for your mate, what is it that you want? I mean after you’ve killed who was involved, then what? Killing us won’t bring you the peace that you want and deserve. I wish I could tell you lies and say that it will get better with time or that you’ll meet someone else, and that connection will help to heal this one, but I can’t do that to you or anyone. I’ve seen many Lycans and wolves go mad over the years from losing their mates whether from being killed in battle, from a crime, or even in childbirth. Nobody is saying you’re wrong for feeling what you’re feeling because I’m sure you know what I’ve done when I thought my mate was dead. I wanted everyone that was involved to die and nearly wiped out an entire supernatural race because of the loss that I felt. This can be settled without anyone else having to die. Please, let us help you. Let us do what we should have done in the first place had we known what was going on.”

I stop talking not knowing what else to say and stand there silently for a second before looking back at my mate and David, then quickly I turn my attention back to Tabitha. She looks to be in deep thought and then she quickly raises her right hand towards me, and black electricity comes shooting towards my chest. Quickly, I raise my right hand and deflect the electricity back towards her and she blocks it with a shield.

“Very good your majesty. You almost had me with that little speech. I mean, I almost thought that you were sincere, until I spotted the witches back there. The same witches that wouldn’t lift a finger to help me, yet they called themselves my sisters. I guess you didn’t come here just to talk after all.”

She raises both of her hands and starts to chant. A gust of wind swirls around me and lifts me into the air then moves her hand and sends me into a tree ten feet away. I use my magic and stop myself from crashing to the ground. Anger starts to rise inside of me which fuels my magic, and it starts to spread throughout my body, surging through me. I float down slowly and land on my feet then walk towards her without breaking a stride. “Well, don’t say I didn’t try to help you.” I muttered to myself before raising my hands and sending two medium sized fireballs at her. She managed to deflect one but the other one caught her left shoulder as she tried to dodge. Then she fired more of that black electricity at me, and I managed to deflect and take out of few of her dark witches. She screams and starts to float up into the air. Raising her arms, she starts to glow with a black aura around her and I summon my magic.

While gathering my magic, I feel the shield that I have on the witches start to waver a bit. No matter what, I cannot let the shield fall, but at the same time I must be able to protect myself. At that moment, Freya looks at me and I see her look between myself and the witches. In an instant, she is inside my head talking to me.

“Alex let go of the shield, I am healed now and can take over. All I want you to do is concentrate on not dying.”

She cuts the mind link and instantly I feel her magic surge and surround the witches who through all of this has never faltered in their chanting. Now that I can focus solely on Tabitha, there is nothing holding me back from unleashing my full power. My body begins to glow with a golden aura surrounding me from head to toe as I slowly lift up into the air. I can hear gasps and people muttering but nobody moves except for the corpses that are slowly coming back to life. My right hand lifts up and I start speaking a few words in French which I never fully learned so it was a bit of a surprise to me.

“Soit en paix!” I say as my hand sweeps across the field of reanimated bodies, and they all lie back down on the ground motionless. Tabitha looks at me with a shocked expression on her face that changes to fear for a split second before her face returns to a neutral look.

“Oh, I see his majesty has some tricks up his sleeve. That doesn’t matter, because soon you’ll join them in death.”

The night sky crackles with all the power zipping through the air as we block and counter each other’s attacks. Freya and David have moved closer to the witches which is safer for them, but I no longer see any of the soldiers on the battlefield, which pleases me. There is no need for anyone else to end up hurt or dead.

“I would really rather not kill you Tabitha, but if you want a war then so be it.” I keep attacking her and after a while, I can sense that she is getting tired. Her magic is depleting. When I was in school, I remember learning that witches can only use their magic for a certain length of time before they needed to rest and recharge. We had been at this for at least an hour. My own magic was starting to wane, though I can go longer than a witch. I have no idea how I know that, but I do. I try to plea with her one more time. “Tabitha, I can tell your magic is almost depleted, please stop this before I hurt you, or worse, kill you.” What I said only seemed to enrage her even more.

“Hurt me! Hurt me! You don’t want to hurt me! Are you serious? All you have done is hurt me. That’s all any of your kind does is hurt people. If he hadn’t done those awful things, then we would be together now. He did those things, never thinking about whether he was going to have a mate or not one day. There was no thought about what it would do to his mate, me, if he was ever found out. All he thought about was himself, just like you are now. You don’t care about me and my feelings, all you care about is saving your precious kingdom and mate!”

After that everything happened so fast. One minute she was screaming and yelling at me, and the next she sent a wave of black electricity so strong and powerful that it nearly moved me with the force, only it wasn’t aimed at me, it was aimed at Freya and before I could think rage surged through me and I sent a powerful blast of my own directly at her chest. She was vulnerable and couldn’t block my power even if she wanted to with the force of the blast. I watched as she plummeted to the ground and hit with a loud thud. The earth beneath her was now a huge crater, but I couldn’t worry about her right now. In that moment I didn’t care if she was dead or not because my focus was solely on my mate. Her heartbeat was slow but seemed to be getting stronger though I did feel a bond snap and knew that it was David. I landed on the ground and quickly ran over to him. The witches had walked over to Tabitha and chanted over her body putting her in a protective cocoon just in case she survived. Her heartbeat was damn near non-existent and her body was broken. I feel Freya move next to me with tears streaming down her face then I hear a scream and feel the heartbreak of his mate.

“Dad! Get to David’s mate and sedate her as soon as possible. I can’t have her go into blood rage. We need to help her.”

“I’m on it son. Please come home safe and bring Freya back as well. I love you son.”

“I love you too dad. We’ll be home as soon as we finish here.”
