My Beastly Fertility System Chapter 32: Warmth in the Wild
With Zane's current strength, he had every right to live in the center of the camp.
Claire looked at the small but familiar cave.
"No. My dad dug this place himself. I want to stay here."
Living in the central square would be much safer. But Fiona and the other women lived there too. Trouble would never stop.
It was better to stay here and live their lives peacefully.
Zane didn't argue. He always let her have her way.
Soon, the two of them started talking about the future. A bigger cave, at least two bedrooms and a living space. A proper stone bed too.
As they talked, Claire slowly drifted to sleep.
In her dream, the children she had lost in her past life ran around her. They laughed and reached for her, all trying to climb into her arms.
Zane gently brushed against her smiling lips and kissed her forehead.
The next day, Claire slept in late. When she woke up, Zane had already cooked and kept the food warm by the fire, close within her reach.
The smell woke her up.
Her stomach growled. She felt starving. She picked up the pot and started eating right away.
Because of the pregnancy, her appetite had grown. She ate the meat with some sour fruit on the side. When she finished, even the broth was gone.
"Little ones, grow up strong," Claire said softly, rubbing her slightly rounded belly.
Outside the cave, Zane was cutting up the animal he had hunted that morning.
A large deer lay on the ground. Its hide had been cleanly removed and set aside.
Steam rose in the cool air, making everything look a little hazy, Zane's busy figure included.
Claire had dreamed of scenes like this in her past life.
But back then, she couldn't have children. Her family life had been tense and cold. Moments like this had never happened.
And now, in this primitive world, she was pregnant after a few days.
Leaning against the cave wall, Claire watched him, her eyes soft and distant.
Zane finished cutting the meat and set aside the portion that needed to be turned in. When he turned around, he saw Claire staring blankly at him.
"Claire, you're awake! Why didn't you sleep a little longer?"
Before, he had asked other men in the hunting group for advice. He knew that pregnant females often had all kinds of reactions.
Claire snapped out of her thoughts and smiled brightly.
"I couldn't sleep without you."
Zane washed his hands and walked over. He gently tapped her nose.
"Want me to go back to sleep with you?"
"Hey! I was just teasing you!"
Claire had meant to tease Zane, but now it backfired. Her cheeks warmed.
Being teased by someone so handsome and gentle made her feel like all the hard days were finally behind her.
She had suffered so much in her past life. This time, she deserved something good.
That afternoon, Zane started expanding the cave.
His hands shifted into wolf claws—long and sharp. With a light swipe, the hard rock split like butter, a big chunk falling away.
Zane had Claire sit outside on a wooden stump. From there, she watched him go in and out, carrying broken stones and piling them to the side.
By the end of the afternoon, the cave had doubled in size.
The next day, word spread through the clan.
Elodie came over with two attendants. The first thing she saw was Claire sitting outside, weaving baskets from strips of grass.
Zane had cut the strips just the way Claire wanted. The green baskets were stacked neatly in a small pile.
Since she had nothing else to do, Claire decided to make a few baskets. They would be useful when she went out to gather food.
Her fingers moved quickly. The shape of a basket formed in no time.
"Oh? Claire, what are you making?" Elodie asked, looking at the odd strips in her hands.
Claire set the half-finished basket aside.
"Just making something for fun. Did you need something?"
"I heard you were digging a bigger cave, so I came to take a look."
Elodie usually didn't get involved in camp matters. She only showed up when someone was hurt or during rituals. Now she came just to check on their cave.
Claire only smiled and said nothing.
She offered Elodie a seat on the wooden stump, then stayed quiet.
The air turned awkward.
Suddenly, Elodie sniffed the air. Her eyes widened as she looked at Claire's belly.
"Claire... are you pregnant?"
Claire was surprised. Even from that distance, Elodie could tell.
She nodded.
"Yeah. I just found out yesterday."
Elodie's face lit up. She stepped forward and looked Claire over carefully.
"It's been a long time since anyone here got pregnant. You have to take good care of yourself. If you feel unwell, come find me right away."
Before, Claire had seemed weak, not like someone who could have children easily. No one expected her to be the first among her group.
It looked like their way of judging would need to change.
Elodie quickly helped Claire sit down and checked her condition. Other than normal morning sickness, everything seemed fine. Only then did she relax.
