My Beastly Fertility System Chapter 43: From Poison to Food
Elodie frowned and snapped, "Who said Claire is stupid? She's very smart! The Beast God must have seen how hard our lives are and sent her to save us."
Then, she dropped to her knees to everyone's shock. She pressed her hands together and bowed deeply toward Claire.
"Thank you, Claire, for finding us new food! Thank you, Beast God, for this gift!"
Her actions hit the clan like a stone thrown into a lake.
The whole place exploded.
Elodie would never lie.
So it had to be true.
Claire really had found new food for everyone!
One by one, the others knelt down. They copied Elodie and bowed toward Claire.
"Thank you, Claire!"
"Thank you, Beast God!"
In that moment, Claire's image rose higher than ever in everyone's eyes.
Claire felt a little embarrassed. Was she just benefiting from modern knowledge?
She quickly helped Elodie up. Her big belly made it hard to move, but Zane steadied her with one hand. That calmed her.
"Ms. Palmer, this is what I should do."
She was part of the clan. Even if many people had not been kind to her, she could not watch them starve in the winter.
Especially the young ones.
Maybe it was the pregnancy. Her heart had grown softer.
Well, fine. She had kept the sweet potatoes to herself before. Sharing the Silkroot now could be her last act of kindness to this clan.
"Ms. Palmer, I found this food not far from here. There's plenty of it. I call it Silkroot."
Elodie's last worry faded away.
It was good that it could be eaten, but if there was only a little, it wouldn't help much.
"Good, good! You are a blessing to this clan!"
Elodie was so moved that tears filled her eyes.
As long as she could remember, no new food had ever been discovered. The people had survived only by following old knowledge passed down from their ancestors.
Now they had one more kind of food. Their clan would grow stronger.
The crowd burst into celebration. They laughed and danced around Claire.
Fiona stood to the side, her eyes full of hate. She stared sharply at Claire, who was now the center of attention.
"Mom, are you just going to watch? Aren't you going to do something?"
Hazel stood beside her, also looking at Claire, who was held protectively by Zane. Her expression was complicated.
"What can I do? If you had found this Silkroot first, they would be praising you now."
In truth, her daughter was not very clever. If Fiona had brought the Silkroot to her right away, Hazel would have figured out how to eat it properly.
For the first time, Hazel felt a bit disappointed in her.
Fiona dug her nails into her palm. Jealousy burned in her eyes, but she could do nothing.
If only she had watched longer. If only she had seen how Claire prepared the Silkroot instead of rushing to eat it raw.
The mocking looks from the others drowned her. No one stood by her anymore. No one tried to please her.
She had never imagined that one day her position and Claire's would switch. She was caught off guard.
From Zane's arms, Claire looked past the crowd and met Fiona's hateful gaze. Then she flashed her a quick peace sign and smiled brightly.
She had won again.
Over the next few days, Claire led everyone to dig up Silkroot and haul it back. Before long, an entire cave was packed with food, and the whole clan was overjoyed.
When Claire walked around the clan, no one showed her any hostility anymore. Instead, they greeted her with respect and admiration.
But Zane grew quieter each day.
Even Claire noticed. She pulled him aside and asked softly what was wrong.
Zane hesitated before answering.
"Winter is coming. I need to leave for a few days. It's almost time to trade with the other clans. We're out of salt, and we need other supplies too."
"Oh! If you hadn't reminded me, I would've forgotten. I wanted to go with you and see the outside world, but with this belly, I'd just slow you down. I'll stay here and wait for you."
Claire remembered now. Zane had mentioned trading between clans before.
It was important.
Her due date was only a few days away. She wasn't sure if Zane would make it back in time.
Zane promised firmly, "Three days. That's all. I won't miss our babies' birth. I'll be there with you."
In the past, these trips took at least four or five days. But this time was different. If he moved faster, he could make it back.
Still, he needed to find someone to look after Claire while he was gone.
A tall figure came to his mind.
Looks like he'd need to use a little trick.
