My Beastly Fertility System Chapter 66: The Clowning of the Mates

4 min 2 views

And yet Fiona had wandered outside the settlement for just two days and come back bonded to a Level 3.

Either Fiona had stumbled into absurd luck, or this male had very specific tastes.

Claire smiled, airy and harmless.

"Level 3? Wow, how impressive! Fiona, how did you find him?"

Fiona didn't catch the sarcasm. She puffed out her considerable chest like a proud rooster.

"I got lost outside the settlement, and Jeffrey rescued me! He even escorted me back! Obviously, I had to repay him, so we bonded! He's my first mate now, so don't even think about it, Claire!"

Claire's eyes sparkled with mischief.

"Oh! But what about your original first mate? Bruno, wasn't it? And the others—especially Gavin. That one is absolutely devoted to you."

Fiona snorted with contempt.

"Those useless things? How could any of them compare to Jeffrey? I should count myself generous for not throwing them out."

Hazel tugged her daughter's arm, trying to stop her—but it was like trying to cap a volcano. The words were already out. The chief could only sigh.

Claire let her gaze drift to the small cluster of male beastfolk standing frozen a short distance away. Bruno and the other five mates.

They'd clearly heard every word. The disbelief on their faces was raw.

All these years, they'd given Fiona everything—obeyed every whim, endured every tantrum. And in her heart, they'd always been disposable nobodies.

Their expressions were a kaleidoscope—black with rage, green with nausea, red with humiliation.

Gavin was the first to snap. Heaving like a bull, he lowered his head and charged—not at Fiona, but straight at Jeffrey.

"No!"

Hazel shouted, too late.

Gavin was fast—closing the distance in a single breath.

This pretty-faced bastard had stolen his Fiona.

Claire's eyes widened. She watched with keen interest, mentally wishing she had popcorn.

"Come on! Wreck him!"

Jeffrey didn't even glance at the incoming boar. His attention was on Claire's impish little expression—and it only made him more intrigued.

The instant before impact, Jeffrey's long arm reached out, snagged Fiona, and swung her directly into Gavin's path.

Bang!

Fiona's body rippled like a waterbed on impact.

Her face twisted in agony.

She flew backward like a launched projectile.

Gavin skidded to a halt. Jeffrey stood untouched.

"Fiona!"

Hazel screamed, rushing to her daughter's side.

Fiona coughed up blood, too hurt to speak, gripping Hazel's arm with white-knuckled desperation.

The snow beneath her was bitterly cold.

Hazel tried to lift her but failed twice. Fiona was simply too heavy, like dead weight.

Hazel whipped around to Fiona's remaining five mates.

"What are you standing there for?! Get over here and help her up!"

Bruno's face was dark. He exchanged glances with the others. Nobody moved.

"If you don't come right now, I'll banish you from the clan and have Fiona dissolve your bonds!"

When a female dissolved a bonding with a male beastfolk, the male's strength plummeted—and in some cases, it was fatal.

That got them moving.

Fiona had recovered enough to speak. Clutching her injured chest, she fixed Gavin with a venomous glare.

"You stupid pig! Get out of my sight! I never want to see you again!"

Gavin's eyes were red. He turned and walked away without a word.

As her mates carried her off, Fiona looked back at Claire and hissed like a curse.

"Claire, you will die by my hand. Sooner or later."

Hazel hurried after them.

Jeffrey, however, didn't follow. He stood exactly where he was, his gaze still fixed on Claire, as if the woman he'd just used as a shield were a complete stranger.

Claire couldn't help herself.

"Your mate just left. Aren't you going after her?"

Jeffrey smiled. His teeth were very white, and the two elongated canines glinted, sharp and cold.

"Claire, we'll meet again."

And next time, it won't be like this.

With that, he sauntered away.

Only once he was gone did Claire dare to really study his retreating figure.

That sinuous, swaying walk. Like a creature out of a dark fairy tale.

Absolute freak.

Claire wrinkled her nose.

Gorgeous, sure. But way too serpentine for her taste.

She shuddered, rubbed the goosebumps off her arms, and went back inside.

Inside the warm cave, Rufus greeted her with a cold huff.

"Took you long enough. Was this Jeffrey so pretty you couldn't look away?"

Claire shook her head with a mysterious little grin, looking enormously pleased with herself.

Zane gazed at her with gentle warmth.

"Enjoy the show?"

"It was spectacular! You two really missed out."

Rufus remained displeased.
