My Beastly Fertility System Chapter 48: A Second Mate
Another male spoke without mercy. "Forget it. Even if you're Level 2, Claire still won't pick you as her mate. Just give it up."
The two beastmen lowered their heads, feeling frustrated. It was like something good had been taken by someone else.
Claire patted Rufus lightly.
"You can put me down now. I can walk."
"Don't move! You're mine now. I'll carry you if I want!"
He sounded harsh, but his arms loosened a little. He carried her all the way to Zane, then gently set her down.
Zane looked Claire over first. She seemed fine. Her belly looked normal too. Only then did he turn to Rufus.
"Weren't you the one who said you'd never take a mate?"
Rufus turned his head away.
"That's because someone shameless set me up and tricked me!"
Zane had done it on purpose. And now he was clearly trying to provoke him again. Rufus told himself he wouldn't fall for it this time.
Claire stepped in to ease the tension.
"Alright, you two. From now on, get along. We're family now."
Zane nodded and looked at Rufus calmly.
"Winter is coming. Tomorrow I have to travel to another clan to trade. I'll leave Claire's safety to you."
Only then did Rufus realize why Zane had rushed to make Claire bond with him.
He nodded seriously. "Alright. I'll protect her with my life."
Now that they were bonded, he stopped thinking about freedom. A woman was fragile during pregnancy, especially when giving birth.
Even though he had been very careful earlier, her round belly still made him a little nervous.
...
Hazel heard from the guards that Claire had taken a second mate. At the time, she was with Fiona.
Fiona was so angry she was almost crying. She grabbed Hazel's arm.
"Mom, look! That awful bitch already took Zane, and now she's taken Rufus too! He's a Level 2!"
Hazel could only comfort her.
"Don't worry. I'll go take a look."
She left right away. Fiona stomped her foot and followed.
When they arrived at Claire's cave, they saw Rufus standing in the yard. His cold, sharp face and strong build made him look untouchable. But the moment he looked at Claire, his expression softened.
Fiona's face twisted with anger.
Why was it that she could only end up with someone like Gavin, while Claire's mates were all outstanding?
"Claire, when did you start flirting with Rufus? You've got some nerve!" Fiona sharp voice came.
Hazel quickly grabbed her, then forced a smile at Claire.
"Claire, if you want to choose a mate, you could've told me. I could've picked a few for you in the clan. Why bond with someone from outside?"
Claire couldn't help but laugh.
Did they really think she didn't know what they were planning?
As long as both sides agreed, bonding was their own choice. Others rarely interfered.
And choosing from the clan? What would they give her? Someone loyal to Hazel's family. That would be like inviting trouble into her home. She wasn't that foolish.
Zane's calm voice cut in. "Hazel, who Claire chooses as her mate is her choice. Even you don't have the right to control that. Besides, I agreed to this. Do you have a problem with it?"
His tone was steady, but his eyes were cold. If she pushed further, he would not hold back.
Hazel calmed down.
Zane was the strongest warrior in the clan. Tomorrow, he would lead the others to trade with another clan. This was critical.
If he failed to bring back enough salt and supplies, their clan might not survive the winter. She couldn't risk that.
Hazel forced a smile and said, "Of course I don't object. I just hope you'll let me know in advance next time. That's all."
With that, she dragged Fiona away.
Fiona left unwillingly, looking back again and again at the two tall figures in the yard.
...
Claire felt quite pleased. She leaned her chin on her hand and looked at her two mates.
Zane was calm and dependable. Nothing seemed to shake him. He always felt in control.
Rufus was wild and proud, like a fierce falcon. Strong, but not as sharp-minded as Zane.
Still, both were rare and outstanding men.
Claire smiled to herself. If she were Fiona, she'd probably be jealous too.
"Wipe your drool," Rufus said, crossing his arms and looking down at her.
