My Beastly Fertility System Chapter 49: A Belly Full of Trouble
Why was she looking at Zane and her like that? Could it be?
Suddenly, Rufus bent down and whispered in Claire's ear, "Tell me. Were you not satisfied just now?"
"I was not!"
The moment he brought it up, Claire's face turned bright red.
That had been way too wild.
She couldn't help thinking about when she first came to this world, how she'd seen beastfolk openly being affectionate everywhere. Had she really started to blend in that much?
Claire turned and hurried back into the cave.
Outside, two male beastfolk were chatting.
"Zane, I heard some females have a stronger need during pregnancy. Is that true? Is ours like that too?"
"Probably. Just be gentle and careful. If Claire feels even a little uncomfortable, stop right away. And after I leave, don't go overboard."
"Got it. Then what posture does she like—"
Claire didn't dare listen anymore. She stuffed her ears with fur and rolled around on the stone bed.
"Pome, will the babies really be okay like this?"
Pome sounded carefree.
"Of course! Don't worry, Master. I'm the Pomella Fertility System. I can handle something this small."
If he couldn't handle something this simple, then what kind of Pomella Fertility System was he? How would he ever hit his targets?
With Pome's reassurance, Claire finally relaxed.
Still, wasn't it a bit too much for the two of them to talk so openly about something so private?
She can't stop them. Not at all.
Claire soon drifted into a deep sleep.
That night, she felt two warm bodies pressed against her, one on each side. It was like hugging two space heaters. In the cold night, it actually felt pretty nice.
The next morning, Zane left the clan, clearly reluctant to go.
Along with him were 11 Level 1 beastfolk.
At the clan entrance, Claire stood with Rufus supporting her. She watched the giant white wolf walking at the front. Leather packs were tied to both sides of his body, filled with goods for trade.
Behind him was a line of beastfolk in animal form, each carrying heavy loads.
The cold wind blew, making the white wolf's fur ripple and shine. He looked noble and graceful as he slowly disappeared into the distance.
"Let's go. He'll make it back safe," Rufus said.
Even though he always liked to compete with Zane, like Claire said, they were still family.
A familiar female walked up and took Claire's hand, smiling.
"Claire, your belly keeps getting bigger. It's even bigger than when I had my quintuplets! I bet you're carrying quite a few."
Another older female chimed in, "That's right. At least seven or eight. Claire is such a wonderful mother."
Claire didn't know whether to laugh or sigh.
So having more babies made someone "good"?
Still, kind words were nice to hear. She smiled and responded politely.
Then someone stepped in front of her.
Fiona's large body blocked the way. She looked even heavier now. Her arms were covered in scratch marks, thick scars forming. Her face looked a little better, but still uneven and rough.
Her eyes were locked on Claire's belly. Her hands were clenched tight.
"Move. Don't block the way," Claire said, protecting her stomach.
"Claire, how many do you think you'll actually give birth to? Do you know how many females die during labor?" Fiona said bitterly.
She had tried for so long and never gotten pregnant.
But Claire had gotten pregnant after just over a month of bonding.
Fiona hated her.
An older female stepped forward and glanced meaningfully at Fiona's stomach.
"Oh dear, some just don't have the luck to carry a child. They may look fertile, but they can't keep even one."
Fiona's face flushed red with anger.
"You bitch! What's it to you? Believe it or not, I'll have my mom kick you out of the clan!"
The people around them scoffed.
"All she does is rely on her mom and throw her weight around. I'm so tired of it."
Fiona didn't expect that those who once flattered her would now mock her. She glared around, but there were too many people looking down on her.
Elena pushed her way in.
"Some women can't get pregnant themselves, so they take it out on others. I kept giving my son every kind of supplement, yet they still couldn't conceive. Turns out he wasn't the problem at all. It makes sense—she has five mates and still hasn't gotten pregnant. What a joke."
She didn't say Fiona's name, but everyone knew exactly who she meant.
Fiona was furious and humiliated. Under all those hostile looks, she finally ran off in embarassment.
She ran so hard the ground seemed to shake, dust flying everywhere.
It had already been three days since Zane left.
Claire gently rubbed her moving belly. Another day of missing him.
Thud!
A heavy sound came from outside.
Rufus dropped the stone slab from his shoulder onto the ground. He brushed the dust off his fur tunic, then walked into the cave.
Since bonding, Rufus had moved into the cave.
Every day, besides checking on the cave full of stored food, he stayed home to take care of Claire.
