Apocalypse Queen: My Space, My Rules Chapter 108: A Generous Bonus
Behind them was a four-wheel diesel cargo cart, and the bed was loaded with the supplies Mariella had ordered.
Denton's whole setup looked intimidating.
The bodyguards inside the villa had thought a gang of convicts had come to rob the place.
Chandler immediately led the security team out to confront them, but then Mariella's voice came from behind.
"I'm the one who asked them to make a delivery."
Mariella stopped Chandler and the others, then walked forward.
Denton wiped the sweat from his forehead and had his men put away their weapons. "The roads weren't safe, so the guys had to carry weapons to scare people off and keep troublemakers away."
Mariella nodded in understanding. "You brought everything, right?"
"I specially rented a boat and delivered it myself." Denton pointed at the fully loaded cargo bed of the diesel cart. "Everything Ms. Townsend asked for is here."
Mariella had them drive the cart into the villa courtyard.
One of Denton's men, a guy named Patrick Hardy, voiced his suspicion. "We agreed on delivery to the door only. Why do we need to go inside?"
Although they had put away their weapons, their eyes were still full of caution.
Since the apocalypse began, they had seen too much bloodshed and too much human cruelty. Danger was everywhere.
If they drove inside, who knew if their escape route would be cut off?
Denton glared at him. "Are you listening to me or to yourself?"
Patrick shrank his neck at once and backed down. "I'm listening... listening to the boss."
The diesel cart drove into the courtyard and, at Mariella's direction, stopped in front of Warehouse No. 3.
Matthew unlocked the door and pulled it open.
Denton directed his men to carry the heavy threshing machine and corn harvester inside, then bring in the jade stones.
"The threshing machine works for both rice and wheat. The corn harvester can also harvest sugarcane and cotton. It comes with the instruction manual. I also included some common spare parts, wrenches, and motor oil. These are the emeralds Ms. Townsend wanted, a little over 1,100 pounds. We'll charge it as 1,000 pounds even."
Compared to the last time he had delivered goods, Denton looked much more worn down now.
If business had not become so difficult, and if Mariella had not offered such a high price, he never would have rented a boat at great expense and personally led his men through danger to make this delivery.
Only he knew how many close calls they had gone through on the way here.
Mariella inspected the goods and paid without hesitation.
They had agreed to trade ten kayaks and three inflatable boats for the two machines. She also gave him two air pumps and 10 liters of diesel as an extra bonus.
These water vehicles were hot commodities in the current market, especially diesel, which had earned the nickname liquid gold.
Seeing those supplies, not only did Denton beam with delight, but even the men behind him, who had been tense and ready for a fight, had their eyes light up with barely hidden joy.
Mariella then brought out a heavy suitcase. When she opened it, stacks of cash were neatly packed inside.
This was the cash she had pried out of Harvey's hidden stash. If she did not spend it soon, it would become worthless paper.
"Ten million total. Count it if you want."
"No need. I trust Ms. Townsend." Denton closed the suitcase neatly and had Patrick carry it out of the warehouse.
Mariella was the last to step out, casually carrying a heavy backpack.
"You and your men worked hard bringing all this from so far away. There are some snacks and drinks in the bag. Eat them on the road."
Denton thanked her repeatedly and took it. The backpack felt heavy in his hands. When he opened it, he was thrilled all over again.
Beef jerky, sausage, buffalo wings, chicken wings, potato chips, peanuts, cashews, dried fruit, dinner rolls, seasoned jerky, fruit leather, fruit jelly...
They were all individually packaged snacks, the kind women and children loved most.
There were also drinks such as Coke, Sprite, juice, yogurt drinks, and apple cider vinegar beverages, packed into one large bag.
Denton was overjoyed and thanked Mariella again and again. "These are all rare treasures now!"
Then he could not help sighing. "Back after the rainstorm floods, we could still dive down and fish some food out of the water. Anything sealed in packaging was usually still good. But ever since that mountain flood, everything underwater got coated in a layer of silt. Now if we dive for supplies, we have to scrape the mud off by hand just to see what it is..."
Life after the apocalypse was truly hard.
He handed the backpack full of snacks to Patrick and instructed him, "Once we get back to the boat, divide it evenly among the guys. Everyone should bring some good food home for their wives and kids."
Patrick was overjoyed. The way he looked at Mariella immediately became much friendlier. "Thank you, Boss. Thank you, Ms. Townsend."
This Ms. Townsend is beautiful and generous. No wonder the boss likes doing business with her.
Denton waved a hand, signaling the others to head out first, while he stayed behind and spoke with Mariella for a few more moments.
