Apocalypse Queen: My Space, My Rules Chapter 64: Arming the Home
They went door to door, registering affected residents and delivering emergency supplies.
Families whose homes had been flooded or whose windows had been blown out by the typhoon were taken to relief shelters for temporary housing.
Those whose homes were still intact received instant noodles, sausages, and dried vegetables based on the number of people in their household registration.
The homeless were given temporary shelter, and those trapped in their homes finally had food. The panic slowly began to ease.
Aside from facing the flood firsthand during last night's supply run, the bodyguards had spent the rest of their time inside the villa. It felt like two completely different worlds.
With that contrast, they couldn't help but feel lucky.
Not only had they found a generous boss, but they'd also secured the best possible shelter.
...
Mariella slept for two hours. When she woke, she saw her team already back in the courtyard training again.
Serena handled the knife with increasing confidence, earning praise from both Number One and Chandler.
Matthew practiced a few moves as well, but most of his time was spent checking the storage and verifying inventory records.
Seeing his serious, focused expression, Mariella knew he'd realized just how bad the situation was.
Even now, most people were still waiting for the storm to pass, for the floodwaters to recede, for life to return to normal.
Only Mariella knew that day would never come.
Matthew's careful attention to supplies meant he'd sensed something too.
On top of that, she'd asked him to stockpile a large amount of medicine and equipment earlier, brought him and his daughter here, and then the disaster struck.
He had likely guessed she knew something in advance.
But he never asked her about it.
Having lived through it once already, Mariella trusted Matthew completely.
She'd gone out of her way to bring him here, not just as a private doctor, accountant, and part-time cook, but as someone she could trust with her back.
Matthew was more of a scholar. In the short term, his combat ability would never match the bodyguards'.
And with so many responsibilities, he didn't have much time to train either.
Most of the time, the team went out together to gather supplies, leaving only Matthew and Serena behind at the villa. If something happened, she worried he wouldn't be able to handle it.
Mariella kept all of that in mind.
That evening, they continued making dumplings, using up the remaining filling and dough.
The bodyguards had finally gotten the hang of it. This time, most of the dumplings looked normal.
At last, they were eating proper pork and cabbage dumplings, and somehow, the ones they made themselves tasted even better.
The rest were stored in the freezer, neatly packed and ready to cook anytime.
Homemade dumplings were naturally healthier than store-bought frozen ones.
After dinner, the team prepared their gear, getting ready to head out again for supplies.
Mariella quietly tugged on Matthew's sleeve when no one was looking. "Come with me."
She led Matthew upstairs, and Chandler followed right behind them.
After organizing the team, Number One noticed through the glass door that the three of them had gone upstairs one after another, which left him a bit puzzled.
He had the others remain in formation in the courtyard and went inside himself, following after them.
Mariella brought Matthew into the second-floor living room and, in a low-key manner, pulled out a handgun, two magazines, and fifty rounds of ammunition from her waist.
"We're often out. You and Serena staying behind might not be safe. I'll try to leave Lucky with you when I can, but you still need something to defend yourselves."
Matthew took the gun, the magazines, and the heavy box of ammo, clearly shocked. "Where did you get these?"
"Picked them up while I was out gathering supplies last night," Mariella said with a blink.
Matthew's expression turned serious as he tried to hand them back. "We're staying here. What danger would we face? You're the one going out all the time. You need these more..."
"I've got more!" Mariella pushed them back into his hands. "Come on, don't argue with me."
Matthew studied her for a moment, then finally accepted them.
A warm smile spread across his face. "Alright. With these, I'll feel a lot more confident guarding the place."
Matthew left in good spirits, and Chandler stepped in right after.
Mariella paused.
Did I ask him to come up here?
"You have firearms," Chandler said evenly, looking at her with a calm but penetrating gaze that made her feel oddly uneasy.
Mariella felt her scalp tighten.
To keep her top lieutenant satisfied, she reluctantly pulled out another handgun from her storage space, along with two magazines and fifty rounds.
"Picked this up last night too. I was just about to give it to you anyway. Good timing."
