Apocalypse Queen: My Space, My Rules Chapter 22: Mariella's Donation
Mariella listened and felt fairly satisfied. She blinked and said, "That's good."
Jennifer would be detained for 30 days. By the time the apocalypse hit, she would still be locked up. Harvey was a repeat offender. No matter how he tried to get out of it, he wouldn't be getting out anytime soon.
As long as Harvey was still in detention when the apocalypse hit, he wouldn't be able to command his people to fight the flood. There would be no chance for him to organize a private team ahead of everyone else, as he did in her previous life.
More importantly, the detention center was nothing like Celestine Ridge. If the flooding got bad, people there could very well drown.
As for Kingston, that rich, useless brat... he got lucky this time. She would let him off for now. There would be time to deal with him later.
Anyone who had hurt her, in this life or the last, she was not letting a single one walk away.
With that kind of inside information, Mariella finally felt like she had a clear picture of where things stood.
As a return gesture, she said generously, "Use the 30,000 dollars from the government to buy life vests, and the 100,000 dollars from Brightcastle Kindergarten to buy inflatable boats and kayaks. Donate everything to the police department under my name."
In her last life, the flood had come out of nowhere. Not only had civilians suffered heavy losses, but even official rescue teams had taken serious casualties.
The flood had hit hard. It tore through houses and swallowed high-rises. Even the police department wasn't spared.
A lot of rescue equipment had been lost underwater, and supplies had run dangerously low, which led to many unnecessary deaths.
This time, even though Mariella could not stop the disaster, she wanted to give the authorities a heads-up in whatever way she could, even though they probably wouldn't believe her at all.
Donald sounded confused. "Why are you suddenly donating all this stuff to the police?"
Mariella answered seriously, "I have a friend who works at the National Weather Service. He says there's going to be severe flooding in 20 days. The supplies I'm donating should be stored at the police headquarters on the highest ground, so they don't get flooded when it happens."
Donald could not help but laugh. "If the National Weather Service really had that kind of forecast, we would've already gotten the notice."
Even though he didn't believe her, he still agreed to report the donation and her request to his superiors.
Right before hanging up, Mariella added, "Set aside five life vests, one speedboat, and one kayak from the donated supplies for yourself. Keep them at home just in case."
Since she had crossed paths with Donald, she wanted to help him as much as possible. Consider it building some good karma.
Donald tried to refuse several times, but in the end, he had no choice but to accept.
Even though he was convinced those things would never actually come in handy, he still accepted them.
...
Mariella had just finished the donation paperwork when Matthew called.
"The medical equipment, medications, and vaccines you ordered have all arrived."
Mariella's eyes lit up. "Bring everything to my garage."
Matthew personally directed the movers as they unloaded an entire truck of medical supplies, stacking everything until the garage was nearly full.
Mariella thanked him. "Thanks for taking time off to help deliver all this."
Matthew hesitated, like he wanted to say something, but in the end, he swallowed the words and gave a casual smile. "It's nothing."
Seeing that he was about to leave, Mariella called out to him. "You know Harvey's already been arrested, right?"
Matthew froze for a second, then blurted out, "When did that happen?"
Mariella raised a brow. "You're his personal doctor, and you don't even know about that?"
Matthew told the truth. "Mr. Graham suddenly put me on leave and didn't explain why.
"He didn't say when I'm supposed to go back either."
Mariella immediately understood. "Because I saved Serena, he's worried you might take my side, so he put you on leave for now. He's afraid you'll leak information to me."
What a petty bastard.
When Matthew asked what had happened, she went through everything in detail, explaining how Harvey had worked with the Shepherds multiple times to set her up and eliminate her.
Matthew listened in shock. A few times, he looked like he wanted to interrupt, but seeing how angry she was, he held it back.
After Mariella finally finished, she crossed her arms and asked, "So what do you think of your boss?"
Matthew was completely speechless.
"Let me be straight with you. Just today, he sent more than 10 thugs after me, saying they were going to break my arms and legs right there on the street. They didn't succeed, but between Harvey and me, there's no way we can coexist." Mariella crossed her arms and looked at him.
Matthew steadied himself and said, "If Mr. Graham really did that, then he's gone way too far."
Mariella asked, "And you still want to work for him?"
The apocalypse was coming soon. Surviving alone without the protection of a group would be extremely difficult.
If Matthew ended up abandoned by the Shepherds and the Grahams, both he and Serena would be in a terrible situation. They might not last very long.
After being reborn, Mariella had already changed a lot of things. She didn't want Matthew and Serena to become victims of the butterfly effect.
In her previous life, Matthew had refused to remove Mariella's organs for transplant to Roxanna. Because of that, Harvey had kicked him out of his team, and he had died a brutal death.
Mariella owed him a favor, and she respected his integrity. That was why she wanted to bring him over to her side.
